Apparently there are several methods of producing black stainless steel, one of which is a thin oxide coating. I presume it would scratch easily enough. It might be something that would look tacky in a few years if subjected to harsh handling.

I've linked a short discussion on blackening stainless steel. I don't know what process the refrigerator makers are using, but right now I would say it is caveat emptor until there is a track record.

I saw something similiar in a Sub Zero with glass. It was gorgeous but about $3,000 more than the stainless!! It was called Carbon Stainless

I was at Sears tonight and came across the refrigerator in Black Stainless....pretty slick.

i think the same thing i thought when i saw the new "bronze" colored appliances: no thanks!

I am considering black stainless. Is the finish less durable than other finishes? Would love to hear any comments about the finish or how others combined it with the rest of the kitchen - from what I understand, only refrigerator/freezers are available in black stainless.
