My Johnny Appleseed Table (lots of pics!)

16 years ago

A while back, OldAlgebra challenged me to do a table celebrating Johnny Appleseed's birthday, which was this past Saturday. I had to put it off a day, as we had a birthday dinner party that night (pics coming for that). But I did do a celebratory dinner for Johnny last night instead. My DH & DD thought I was nuts when they saw the tree and heard what the table was for . . . but they did enjoy our dinner (LOL!).

Please excuse the quick and sometimes blurry pics, as they were hungry and kept hurrying my "photo shoot" along.

I had pretty much everything already, as I didn't want to have to find storage space for new things. The only things I did buy were the miniature apple ornaments, $1.99 @ HL.

Here's the table, before my famished DH & DD sat down. They criticized my tree, as it had no leaves. I was thinking of hot glueing some on, but didn't have time. Copper pot is an old one. Maximillian Sunflowers are from my back garden. I was going to cut more, but it was too dark to de-bug them properly.

My menu was: Herb Roasted Pork Tenderloin, Applesauce, Latkes, Baked Squash with Butter, Brown Sugar & Cumin, and a nice Chardonnay. For dessert, I made Alice Waters' "Apple and Brandied Currant Tart" from her Chez Panisse Cafe cookbook. It was heavenly!

{{gwi:1435286}}

Square plate is from my nextdoor neighbors, who are Hoffman Pottery.

{{gwi:1435288}}

My latkes are on one of my new gold glass sunflower plates. I forgot to put the sour cream bowl in the middle before I took this pic. Plates were $1 each at GW.

{{gwi:1435291}}

I received this apple pitcher 26 years ago at my bridal shower. I love it. Last night it held more ice water.

{{gwi:1435292}}

I found this darling butter dish at an antique shop last summer, for my fruitware collection. It worked perfectly for this apple & Autumn-themed table.

{{gwi:1435294}}

These salt & pepper shakers are part of my Fruitware collection, too. Only the pepper shaker actually has an apple on it, but I thought it would look silly without the salt shaker ;^D

{{gwi:1435296}}

Here's the table set before we sat down. New gold glasses and small footed bowls were a find at GW for $1 each. Franciscan plates from GW @ $6 each. I painted my sunflowers wine glasses a few years ago.:

{{gwi:1435298}}

And with plated food. I need some other flatware for tables like this!

{{gwi:1435300}}

Here's a terrible pic of a slice of the tart on one of my leaf plates (Marshalls, last year, $1.99 each), along with my Franciscan coffee cups. I did a bad of getting it out in one piece, but it tasted heavenly!

{{gwi:1435302}}

And, finally, my buffet with my beautiful Autumny yellow roses:

. . . OK, OldAlgebra, where's your table?????

    Just gorgeous! Where do you get the energy? And you know I love the Franciscan, since I also have it and collect Watt Pottery. Hey, find you some Watt pieces during the year and add to your table!

    I'm just ga-ga over your house.

    Pork tenderloin, with applesauce and potato latkes is one of my favorite menus. I even made it for dinner last Christmas. I had to laugh about you considering gluing on leaves at the last minute. It's great that you had so many apple things on hand. - Gail

    OMG....more Fattening Fotos. Between you and Kathleen, I stay hungry too. No wonder your family was rushing you, the pork and latkes look scrumptious. I've never made either, but think I better BEG for your recipe and try it.
    You sure know how to meet a challenge!!! Johnny Appleseed must be very proud of you. LOL, way to go.
    And your buffet is so lovely, yellow roses are favorite.

    hugs, Karen

    What a creative 'Apple Tree' Lynn!!
    Your food looks so yummy (love latkes). You had so many cute things to go along with your dinnerware. I love that Apple Pitcher too. How nice to still have it, after all these years. Your home is so beautiful, with so many lovely touches. I see your new mercury piece, and it looks perfect on your buffet with the roses.
    Glad you got to do this. I enjoyed seeing it. I'm sure you're happy that the pressure is off, now that you did your 'Johnny Appleseed' table..LOL

    That looks like a scrumptious plate of food amidst a wonderful setting. I love pork tenderloin! My mother and grandmother have/had those Franciscan Apple dishes. I'll always have memories of dinners with those plates.
    I'm not familiar with Hoffman Pottery, but that square plate is really neat!

    What a good sport you are, Lynn. Love the tree, doesn't matter about leaves---this way the apple ornaments show up better. Those dishes are so pretty and it's great that you had the pitcher and salt/peppers to use also. I haven't had dinner yet, so I am drooling just looking at your food. Hope you all had a good time. It is amazing that you already had ALL of those beautiful, unusual pieces for such a spectacular tablescape!! I keep scrolling back up to admire everything.

    The apple tree is 'the icing on the cake AND the cherry on top'!
    Tell DD and DH to use their imagination. There have been a lot of early frosts and the trees are losing their leaves earlier this year. So there! Huh! How do they like those apples!!!

    My DS came into my room just now before leaving for school and I was showing him your table and telling him that for some reason those Franciscan dishes remind me of the Desert Rose dishes that I have been gathering for a future tablescape. I even got a bowl out of my china cabinet to show him. I looked on the bottom and what was written there?

    Franciscan! DUH!!

    After dinner last night,(when my belly was full), I couldn't see the pics of most of your food for some reason.

    This morning with my empty growling stomach, they are there in all of their glory making me STARVE!!!!!

    Thanks! I don't usually take pics of the food I serve, as most of the time my family is ready to eat "NOW". But, it was fun to get a few pics in for this dinner. I think the "apple tree", now denuded of it's apples, will make a good Halloween tree, so I'm saving it out in our garage for a while. I've always loved the Franciscan Apple pattern. The cups were DH's mother's and I finally decided to look for matching plates recently. I love them and they do remind me very much of my wonderful, late MIL. Now, whenever I use them, DH & I make a point to tell our DD stories of the sweet grandma she never had a chance to know.

    Betty, too funny about your Desert Rose "Franciscan" plates!! I LOVE that pattern, too. Will you set a table with it sometime and show us the pics?

    Boy, oh, boy, did you ever come through! It's great. I'm amazed. I especially love the tree. It reminds me of the Disney Johnny Appleseed movie. It's very woodsy - and despite its lack of foliage, it's a happy tree. In fact the whole thing is rustic, yet classy at the same time. Your husband and daughter were only teasing you about the tree because they were anxious to sit down to that fabulous dinner.

    Now, about my JA table. Alas, there will be none. Everything is covered in drywall dust and I just can't bring myself to pull out more things to add to the mess. I'm going to miss decorating for Halloween, but right now, I simply can't bring myself to think about it. Next year I'll do it for sure (and I'll probably use your bare tree with little apples idea.)

    Lynn, you certainly met the challenge! Your JA tablescape is terrific and the food...Mmmmmm, yummy! No wonder, OA challenged you, you certainly do have so many beautiful apple-themed things to use! How sweet that you tell your DD about her grandma when you use the dishes, that makes it extra special! Love the apple tree and you are right, it will be great at Halloween. You are amazing doing back to back tablescapes with the bday party and this one! Great job!

    It looks beautiful, Lynne. Such pretty pieces..
    Dinner looks good too!

    OA, I can relate to the sheetrock dust...we had half of the basement finished, and even though I kept the doors shut, it crept in..and the other side of the basement looks like it snowed in there...lots of cleaning to do!

    Great job, Lynne..
