the top 2 are the latest the 6 update 37 is out of date and definitely needs removal.
javara will do that for you

The javara on the page I am taken to didn't work. I downloaded javara but looking at it I believe it is beyond what little computer knowledge I have.. I want to remove the one out of date for sure. Java is sure giving me a headache.
I have used add & remove several times but not now.

    Hi Dar.

"I have tried to delete them but they stay."

We need to know the error you get when you try to remove Java from the add /remove programs list, the exact error.

What is the operating System you're using?

Normally when software is updated, the superseded code remains but is no longer used.

If Java works like that, there would be no need to remove the older version. I'm not familiar with the specifics of Java. For those directing this removal effort, do you know the specifics?

    1-.. are U sure U want to delete java(tm)6 update 37

    2-preparing to uninstall java(tm)6 update 37

3- do U want the following program to UPDATE shareware on this computer.

    @snidely,

Why should I uninstall older versions of Java from my system?

Uninstalling older versions of Java from your system ensures that Java applications will run with the most up-to-date security and performance improvements on your system.

    2-preparing to uninstall java(tm)6 update 37

So now it should remove the Java.

Not sure why you're are getting this message,

3- do U want the following program to UPDATE shareware on this computer.

Have you tried REVO to remove the target in question?

Many full upgrades will remove old code before installing the new version. Unless directed by the manufacturer I always do clean installs so either way has no effect on my system.

I have never used REVO but I'll see if I can.
I sure didn't understand what Raven gave me.

Zep - that's a perfect answer. 10/10. And an interesting approach that Java uses.

There are times that a program's updates are just incremental - some changed code here and there, but what's put out isn't always comprehensive/stand alone. I guess with free stuff, there's no harm (and possible good) from using DA's approach.

For me, I never have the time or interest to figure out what is or isn't included, I just put new stuff on top of the old and move on. If problems result from that, I can deal with that, but I haven't had that experience...yet.

Well if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all.
I downloaded REVO It started fine but went a little over 3/4 of the way then the bar just stopped moving. I don't know what to do now. Somehow I picked up a bar to along the way also.

So you're saying revo started to remove Java and then stopped?

and the asktool bar got installed something like that?

Yes REVO started & then stopped.. the toolbar is IMinent bar.

Can you tell me if IMinent bar is listed in the programs and Features list.

Click start, click control panel, click Programs an features, look for IMinent bar if it is see if you can uninstall it.

I got IMinent out.. at least I can do something right tonite.
Now if I could just at least get that old Java out...I'd like it all out.

On ravens link for Javara. Did you download it, if you did there should be a yellow folder on the desktop with a zipper on it, let me know if that is there.

Yes Jeb I downloaded it..got the zipped folder & opened it.
    It has:
    localization
    config
    javaRa.def
    javaRa
That's where I got confused & didn't know what to do next

    OK. Very good.

Now right click on the javaRa and then choose "Run as adminstrator" Then choose the language of your choice, you will select "English" there is a little arrow by the language box click it, then click English then click "Select"

    Then

Click Remove Older Versions Let it run.

    Then,

    Click Additional Tasks
Place a check next to Remove Useless JRE Files and click Go

I ran it but the java all 3 are still in add & remove.
I Hope I didn't mess up.. it removed somethings.
I may have been better off just leaving it all alone & taking my chances with a virus. I feel like something is wrong.
I rebooted after I ran it & my computer sounds like it is running all the time now. Never heard it before like this. So far it seems to be working OK. I just don't like the sound I'm hearing.
I'm about ready to give up on the Java. I have it disabled on FireFox.

    Z,

You might have just solved a concern I had last night trying to remove Adobe Reader 9 from a friend's XP laptop.

I was using REVO, and like SF's Java attempt it stopped at 2/3 of the way on the first step; report of creating restore point and action by the product's built-in uninstaller). It also presented a window with an alert regarding a protected registry key. I never thought of running the process as the administrator. The obvious. Duh!

This might be the cure also for SF and REVO.

    Thanks.

    THANKS,

I don't have an answer, but a question if that's okay.

    Since

    • The old Java shows up in "Add & Remove."
    • "Add & Remove" tries(?) but fails to remove it.

Would running this Microsoft "fixit" covering "Fix problems with programs that can't be installed or uninstalled" be appropriate? http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/

Is it now safe to install Java? I just found the program I use to show the star map needs Java to run.

Looks like 7/11 is the latest, and thus the safest?

Think most of the powers to be are still recommending you uninstall or disable it. Java came out with a new version but immediately there is an exploit that probably be added to the next hacker toolkit.

In earlier versions of Windows, an application that is uninstalled using means other than Add/Remove will still show in Add/Remove even though it is not truly installed. I googled the method for finding your current java version in Windows 7. It looks pretty easy to follow.
