Miele Futura Diamond has arrived!

Hello Everyone,

Living in a small house with open space, I had to get rid of my noisy Maytag dishwasher. My sofa is just a few feet away from the dishwasher and the bedroom is not that far either.

I always knew the replacement was going to be a Miele. My parents still have their entry level model after 24 years and I have their top of the line vacuum which I love (made vacuuming not a chore anymore, and I'm a guy! ;-)

I also want to "buy once" as much as possible to reduce waste.

So I broke the bank and bought the Futura Diamond. If I was going to keep it for 20+ years I wanted the most quiet model.

Well, the door handle itself feels more solid than my previous dishwasher. The quality is top notch.

My dishes have never been so clean.

Another thing that is rarely mentioned, is how much more dishes fit thanks to the trays configuration. I can put almost twice as much than my previous dishwasher, reducing energy and water consumption on top of what Miele does with its machine.

I must admit, the LED lights are really nice...it's like a fridge, I don't know how I did it without lights before ;-)

My only (slight) disappointment, is the noise level. Don't get me wrong, it's not noisy. But after reading so many people talking about not knowing it was on, having to put their ears on the panel etc, I guess I was expecting total silence. But it's not. It's really quiet, but you can tell it's running. Maybe my house is really quiet. Again, it's not bad, I guess my expectations were too high.

Overall, I have no regret for making a major investment in buying a top quality product that will not see the landfill for many years and will use as little resource as possible in the mean time.

Next stop, Miele washer and dryer and Capital Culinarian range (it's going to be while...)

Thanks a lot for everyone's info on this forum.

    Thanks for the info.
What wash modes have you been using?
Look for one called Extra Quiet, as it says it should wash 20% quieter when using that mode, but the wash time is longer.

Also, which version of the Diamond did you get (visible display, or hidden display), and about how much was it? Ive hard $2600-2800.

Please post some pics if you can :)

@Portago, congrats! That's funny about your sofa. My kichen is somewhat open to my family room and my husband sits in a leather chair near the door opening. My previous KA drove him crazy. Especially when the pump kicked in. He would have to turn up the volume on the tv.

We just installed a new Optima (I opted for huge savings on this vs. going with new ones - especially since my KA was still working) and love how quite it is. It is not silent but very quiet. The thing I really noticed is how quickly it drains (maybe 30 sec). My husband was very happy that tv will not be interrupted again.

I purchased the W4842/T9822 earlier this year and they are awesome. I got a free 10 year warranty on them (Cdn promotion) and couldn't be happier.

Yes, you are correct, there's an extra quiet mode that I have yet to try (I'll report on that one later). I wanted to see how quiet it was on a "regular" mode.
Again, to be fair, I was mentioning the noise while reading on my sofa just a few feet away, in the evening with no music (no TV in this room).
I don't think you could hear it if there was any ambient noise (music, TV) or just regular day time "House noise".
You could easily do a load during a Dinner party and no one would know.

The price was $2800 +tax+install, out the door around $3200...please don't judge me!!! I know it's a lot...

I have to say the Miele concierge service was excellent though (no more independent installers for Miele). They had pads for the floor, stuff to cover their shoes (like a doctor in the OR) very courteous and professional.

Sorry, can't figure out how to upload pictures...

You can upload pictures to the site www.tinypic.com and then copy the HTML picture code into here.

What area did you purchase it? I've only heard about the Miele concierge doing installation in Canada and California, not the rest of the US yet.

    I'm in California.

Thanks for the tip about the pictures. Here they are:

Don't know if I've got any 3,200 dollar DW problems I must say that is one beautiful machine. I think maybe you've done exactly what you should have. For most people, DW's are things they use and live with every single day, day-after-day, for a loooong time. They should be satisfying to look at and to use.

    Portago,

Thanks for the pics, that looks nice.
Which detergent are you using in the unit, the Miele tabs or another brand?

Installers left me a box of Miele, so that's what I'm using now. Half a tablet per load as recommended. Works perfect.

By the way, I've tried the extra quiet mode (4h 30mn!) and couldn't really tell the difference in noise. I guess the regular level is low enough. I also did my first wash during day time and can't tell it's running until you're next to it. The only noise is the water slushing, can't hear any mechanical movement.

I guess they gave you the new box of 72 Miele tabs that are phosphate-free.
I am having a Miele Service Tech come out on Monday due to some issues that I am having.
In the link below, you can see some pics that I posted showing the amount of suds I'm getting when using a full tab, half tab, and quarter tab, compared to the older Miele tabs that didn't give me any suds.

PLEASE DO ME A FAVOR :)
Before you do a load, run your hot water at the sink for a minute to make sure the hot water is in the line and close to the dishwasher.
Place a full tab (or half tab) in your unit and run the Pots & Pan mode.
After you hear the detergent door flip open, wait about 10 minutes and see if you have suds in the bottom. If there isn't any, close the door and let it run for about another 20 minutes and check again.
Please take a picture showing the bottom water area, so we can see if there are suds or not.

I can't figure out why these new Miele tabs are creating so much suds in my unit.

    Thank you.

Also, my unit stopped working yesterday and is in a continual "drain mode". I called Miele tech support, and they said water must have got in the bottom pan under the unit and tripped the leak protection sensor. The only way to fix this is for the Tech to come out.

Here's the full details, but I'm wondering if it was caused by the suds in the wash mode.

@Portago, are you using softening salt and/or rinse aid too? Or just 1/2 Miele tab?

More than four hours! I know it means nothing in the scheme of things. Does everything (spray arms, water intake, drainage or whatever) just move slower or without mechanics? Lol. Bless those Miele elves.

fauguy, I did read your thread and actually opened the door once to check it out but was either too late or too early. I'll try again, just give me a few days since I'm out of town for now. Thanks to your thread I don't want to put more than half a tablet, that and the fact that the Miele installers told me too much soap is what kill a dishwasher in the long run.

livebetter, I do use salt and rinse aid. The miele guys topped it all off for me and also tested the water hardness for proper setting.

As far as the quiet mode, I think everything just work slower (purely speculation). Many times I could not even hear the water slushing, like the whole thing was on a break. But regardless, the results were perfect.
It's the first DW where I don't actually rinse anything including pots an pans.

@Portago, nice. My installer only tested to make sure it was running properly.

What is your softener set at? Do you know the hardness of your water? My installer told me (as did someone at Miele) that our water doesn't really need softening. Around 8 - 9 gr.

I have been running mine with 1/2 Miele tab, no salt, no rinse aid. So far not bad.

Don't remember the setting I just know it was low because we have a water softener for the house.

I am surprised you would need salt if you already have soft water?

I'm curious about the width of the thing.
I thought I read that the Miele dishwashers are slightly narrower than other standard 24" models.

Did your installer put in anything to adjust for that? Or did it fit right in the spot where the old one was?

It's only using a little bit of salt, so it should last for a long time.

It is a little bit narrower than the standard 24, but nothing was installed as the gaps were too small to bug me.
Here's a picture of the bigger of the two gaps:

    Portago,

The Miele tech was out sick on Monday, so I was re-scheduled for Thursday. Since then, my unit stopped the continual drain mode and has started to work like normal. I purchased a bag of Method Smarty detergent tabs from Target, and one-half of those seem to clean just as good as a half Miele tab, but does not produce all those suds.

Have you had a chance to try the test I listed above, about using a half Miele tab on the Pots & Pans mode and check mid wash to see if there were suds?

I did post some new pics in the thread listed below showing what it looks like when using the Method tabs. As you can see, there are no suds.

CONGRATS!! I love it. I have had my Miele La Perla II about 6 months I think. While it is totally amazing, I have to have the new Futura Diamond. I called my Miele appliance store (I've used them for about 15 years)...hopefully they can get me a Futura Diamond in a week or so!! LOVE those LEDs.

So funny your Miele installer told you to use 1/2 a tab. Miele told me to use a whole tab, as they were designed to be used whole, regardless of the load size.

I actually like the Finish Quantum Powerball tabs MUCH, MUCH more than the Miele tabs. A fraction of the cost, so easy to find and my dishes and the interior of my La Perla has never looked better. I do use salt (either Somat or Miele Care Collection) and I also use Rinse Aid (Miele or Somat). Since the Finish Quantum tabs also have Rinse Aid, I set my rinse aid to setting 1, instead of 3.

    Larsi,
Thanks for the info about the Finish tabs. I will try them next time.
The Miele concierge guys told me that too much soap is really bad for dishwashers in the long run. They told me to use the whole tab for a full and very dirty load only.
I do love the LEDs by the way, it's like a fridge, I can't imagine not having them now ;-)

    fauguy,
I'm sorry I was out of town for a while. Here's a picture of half a (new) Miele tab. It's on a normal cycle though.
I'll will post it on your thread as well.

Here's something I found out today from a Mile tech, if you take apart the casing of the unit and change the positive and negative connections on the LEDs, they will be red in color.

I had a Miele tech here the other day (adjustment on my T9822). He went over some dw things with me (since it's new). He also said use 1/2 tab (less detergent) for a load that's not full or really dirty.

I had some streaking on the inside of my door and he said it was from too much detergent. He said the inside should be shiny and streak free when done.

He also said I could periodically run vinegar through to clean the machine and pipes. He said run the express cycle and when I hear the water start to swish open it up and dump 2 cups of vinegar right in. I did it after he left to clean out any detergent and it was sparkling (and smelled so clean).

I received and loaded my box of Miele salt today. I used 1/2 tab tonight and everything came out very clean.

    livebetter,

Would you mind doing the same thing that Portago did a few posts up. Use a half of Miele tab and run your Optima in the Pots & Pans mode. After you hear the detergent door pop open, wait about 10-15 minutes and open it up to check and see if there are any suds like what I was getting - if there aren't any suds.

    Thanks.

portago -- Miele specs require a slightly smaller install space, as you noted. I believe it's 23-5/8" (antss correct me if I'm wrong, please). If you've installed in a standard 24" space with the gaps you showed and said didn't bother you, that will account for the dw not being as quiet as you might like.

My older Incognito is installed that way due to an error by the cabinet folks. My newer Optima was properly installed to spec. Neither was noisy but we hear one and didn't hear the other at all.

@larsi, lol ... you've been quiet on the laundry front - I guess you've been too busy drooling over new dishwashers. I got the Optima and so far really liking it a lot. Of course, nothing can compare to my laundry obsession ;)

    @fauguy, I'll see what I can do!

Rococogurl, thank you so much for the tip. It's funny you mentioned it, because it crossed my mind.
Is there a fix? Should I fill the gap with foam or something?

We aren't the first two people to have this happen and there must be a suggested work around from Miele because anyone replacing an older machine encounters this.

I've never seen a post with a solution here. But antss likely knows.

I wouldn't go stuffing anything in there myself. I'll check, and maybe you would too and we can compare notes. I'd like to get this adjusted when I add my new cabinet. We can hear the machine draining on the second floor.

Yes there is an accessory that Miele sells which is a set of filler strips that goes next to the dishwasher to fill the gaps in the sides for specifically this reason, the filler strips are sold in stainless and I believe still black and white (not 100% on the black and white)
