Master Bath Shower tile trim

I am wanting to do a ceramic tile shower...the walls are tall (9ft) and on a subfloor, so the labor and materials will be $$$. The lady at the tile store is suggesting I use a row of 4" tumbled stone tiles all the way around on the inside and the outside to trim out the shower door (we won't have a glass door...it will be open to a drying-off area that will also be tiled). She says this is much cheaper than buying all of the trim pieces. I have searched all over the internet and cannot see an example of what this might look like...has anyone done this or know of it??? I am all for saving $$$ but not if it is going to have to be replaced in a few years....Thanks for any and all advice.

How are you going to finish the edge of the 4x4 that is exposed? Won't it be raw tile on the side? Usually the point of a trim piece is that it is finished on a side so that the part that meats painted drywall is finished, not raw. Does that make sense? Or am I missing some detail of how you are installing?

Well, she's right! I found it to be the trim pieces that blew my budget, until I found an alternative bullnose that was on clearance. I think it will really nice with the 4x4 trim.

The natural stone looks the same on all surfaces, as opposed to the raw edge of man-made tile. I've seen it done and it really looks fine. Opinions differ.

Oh right. Sorry, I did miss that it was natural stone, not porcelain / ceramic.

Thank you houseful and brickton...well, we are narrowing it down and yes, the trim pieces are really expensive! I am leaving to go out of town next week and the GC is pressing me to make some final decisions about the tile...ugh...this process is very draining. I thought it was suppose to be fun! lol! Again, I think it will work...not my favorite look but certainly affordable.

I've never seen or done this before, but it's an interesting concept. Your salesperson is right. Bullnose is not cheap, by any stretch. For one shower, where the bullnose frames the entrance, as well as capping the curb, maybe the edge of a bench, and framing a niche-- I've seen just the bullnose run over 200.00. Your sales person's one sharp cookie!

The only downside would be that the tumbled marble will be a little thicker than the rest of the tile. But it might make for an interesting design element, too.
