Antivirus Questions

My Norton Antivirus is due to be renewed, and I'm thinking about switching to AVG. I know from doing a search on this forum that I should first download and save AVG, then uninstall Norton, then install AVG.

To uninstall Norton, if I just go to Add/Remove programs and select Norton Antivirus, will that remove all that needs to be removed? I also see Norton Systemworks there, should I remove that also? When I go to Start, Programs, Norton Antivirus, I don't see any uninstall option there, although I do see that with Norton Systemworks.

Once I install AVG, are there any settings or tweakings that I need to do, or is simply installing it sufficient to fully protect me? Are there scans that I should periodically do, and are updates automatic?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this process.

Not sure what to tell you about uninstalling all parts of Norton Systemworks; I'm sure someone else can help you with that.

As soon as you install AVG, be sure to update it. There are settings you can personalize for updating, scanning, etc.

You need to go to the symantec web site and find the instructions for uninstalling your version. If you don't it won't be completely removed. I went to symantec.com and clicked on support and searched for remove norton antivirus. There were a lot of hits. You should narrow it down by typing your version in the search box. Here's the link: Removing Norton Antivirus.

AVG is set by default to scan your confuser at 8 a.m. irrespective of time zone - if that is not a good time then change it to when the computer will be running but you are likely to be doing other chores. Apart from that I run at default settings.
