Asko DW. Who loves them, who hates them?

We are getting close. The one place we have decided to buy our appliances sells Asko, not Miele. We kind of want to buy from one dealer as we are buying out of town. We are kinda leaning towards the Asko, and I wanted to hear what you owners thought.

I love my Asko. Super quiet, super efficient, lots of features and water/heat/dry/cycle options, and one of the easiest dw's to install. Don't believe the CR articles...they judged the old models before the re-organization of the company a few years ago. Now the repair record is stellar.

Most of the folks in here tend to lean towards the Miele/Bosch/FP direction, so I doubt you'll get much feedback, except from owners of the older models (prior to about 5 years ago) that switched and don't like Asko. For what it's worth, my plumber highly recommends Asko.

Remember with either the Miele or Asko that they are slightly more narrow than the standard 24" US models. So to achieve the max sound dampening, you need to either have your cab company make the opening smaller (which I don't advise...limits future owners of your house to buying Euro dw's) or getting a small strip of wood you can install to close the gap.

Thanks Bruno. I am getting my cabinets custom made, so I will be sure to mention this.
    Anyone else?

Well, my friend hates hers--too many repairs. I think it's around 2 or 3 years old. I'll have to find out the model number when she gets back from vacation.

Love mine. It's four-plus years old now and it does a fine job with very little water and detergent. It has had two problems: the installer (ASKO-certified, yet) didn't hang the discharge tubing properly, so food collected in a fold in the tube and kept the DW from draining properly. Replaced the tubing and haven't had that issue since. The other problem was a filter guard coming loose and making noise when it was nicked by the impeller. According to the tech, that's a rare problem. The DW washed fine; it just made this unpleasant whining noise. The part was replaced and hasn't come loose since.

I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. But I don't think I'll have to for another decade or so. :-)

Not a fan here. My ASKO is loud. I think the basket size is smaller than other DW's. I was willing to accept this given it's supposedly quiet operation. Also, I wanted it fully integrated. I am happy with my other appliances, but the ASKO -- not so much. We will probably use it for a couple of years then, depending on finances, replace it. Pity, since I'll have had the custom panels made. Sigh. And yes, I have had an ASKO tech out to look at it and he says that's just the way it sounds. I have heard Bosch and even lower end machines that are quieter. Also, it heats up the granite countertop alot. The tech says that's also normal. But I worry about the heat ultimately affecting the surrounding cabinetry. If I had to do it again, I'd go with something else.

We have an Akso at the office. When the machine was a little over 2.5 years old, it needed a repair costing $300 and over a month to get the part. Apparently, a number of offices have this DW because the ADA requires a 34" high countertop, under which the Akso fits. Consumer Reports says that it has a high frequency-of-repair rate. If you do a search on this forum, you can read about my experience. I was not impressed with the reaction of Asko North Amerida.

On the other hand, the Asko is very queit and does a terrifc job of washing dishes with very little water.

At home, I'm happy with my Kenmore Elite DW.

ASKO has a 3 year warranty. Your repair wasn't covered? Been shopping a lot lately too. Leaning toward the ASKO 3251XLSS. Miele and Bosch reliance on rinsing agents has steered us away from those brands.

ASKO's three-year warranty does not cover "commercial" installations, which apparently covers an "ASKO at the office".

Bought my first one about 5 years ago for my previous house. No problems over the 3 years or so that I lived there. It got a little noisier over time. It started spittin' out little rectangular plastic parts that seemed to have broken off from somewhere every once in a while. Never could figure out where it came from and didn't seem to interfere with the function. The place I bought it from had no idea.

Moved to a new house, bought another Asko. Been 2 years and no problem. Again, I think it's a little louder than it used to be but nothing to complain about. I do use the longer cycles and the extra heat to get it to dry better. It holds tons.

When I was looking 2 years ago, I was thinking about getting a Miele. One store had a Miele and an Asko next to each other. The wheels on the Asko slid easier and seemed sturdier. The racks also felt more substantial. The Asko just had a better feel to it so that's why I went with that. To be fair, it was an upper end Asko compared to a lower end (but still more expensive) Miele. Haven't regretted it.

I'm glad to see they've gotten better. I had one I bought in 1997, and I was never impressed with its ability to clean. Oh, it did okay, but for the price I'd have liked it to do better.

2 years after I bougth mine it's motor went completely, but fortunately it was covered under warranty.

5 years later it died horribly and I gave up and bought a whirlpool - almost as quiet and cleaned better.

I'm glad that Asko has gotten better! Their washer and dryer is great - have one of them too.

We've had the Viking version of Asko's top-of-the-line unit for about a year and couldn't be happier. Extremely quiet and uses very little water.

I should also add that between our Asko dw, LG Tromm front loader washer, Toto Drake toilets, and Grohe showers, our water bill/usage is only a third of what it was before the renovation.

Which is important out here in the west, where we have severe water shortages.

And ironically, our dishes are cleaner, our clothes cleaner, the toilets flush anything and have never clogged, and the showers are fun :) You'd never know it was a lower water usage house.
