Trying to avoid lights beside mirror - other good options?

It seems to be almost universal advice that there should be lights beside the mirror - but I don't like having lights there. The direct light/glare hurts my eyes, even if there's a diffuser on the lights. I can't stand table lamps either, for the same reason.

So what other options are there? Is there a practical way to put enough light for a bathroom mirror without actually having lights shining in your face? Or is there no real alternative, and I just need to plan to have enough light for me to leave the side lights off, and put them in for anyone else who would be using the bathroom?
