choosing a vanity...style vs. function and does resale matter?

We're adding a Jack & Jill bath to our home. We have no kids, so this will be the guest bath. I want to be mid-range on this: beautiful looking, but without all the splurges we put in our master.

General color scheme: gray floors (inspiration carrara marble), cream/gray shower tile, cream wainscoting, light green walls.

For the 2 36" vanities, I'd like an espresso color with a white/gray/black granite top (found some $130 counters). I love the look of this Ronbow vanity

Two concerns/questions:

1. The color is "vintage walnut" so I'm not sure it will go with the white/gray/black granite. Opinions?

2. They have no version of this with drawers. They've got a couple others, but I don't like the styles quite as well. We don't need drawers for our guests, but will that detract from resale (not our forever home)? Or is this such a minor detail that if a buyer is blown away by the look of the room, they won't care a fig about whether the vanity has drawers? Or should I just fall in love with one of these other styles?

Here are the other options:

I dunno... I'm having drawers in all my guest baths, and I'll stock them with things people might be happy to find: a couple kinds of toothpaste in tiny tubes, new tooth brushes still in the boxes, tweezers, nail clippers, etc.

I do like your choice very much-- awfully stylish-- and the lack of drawers is probably a pretty small thing if you have another spot for necessities.

I have a hard time beleiving it would really hurt resale. People might use it as an excuse in negotiations if they plan on using it as the kid's bath, but they could probably switch the cab without even changing the granite.

I also prefer the Ronbow over the other two. IMO, the "vintage walnut" color goes well with your color scheme, to answer your first question. About the drawers, I don't think it's a big deal at all not having them. You could have a medicine cabinet to use for storage or an organizer in the vanity if someone really needs it. I agree with oruboris and doubt that having secondary bath vanity without drawers would affect resale.

Ditto the two previous messages. While I absolutely must have drawers in my master bath, and would like them in the hall bath - it certainly wouldn't bother me for even a second if I were buying a home. And I also like the color combination.

I think your first choice is the best. The Ronbow style will appeal to more buyers than the other two and that will be more important than drawers. After all you really aren't thrilled with #2 and #3 yourself.

If I were looking to buy, I'd consider #2 & #3 as "replace at some point" projects -- they're tied to a particular style, which is not mine, while #1 can fit into a larger range of styles. To be honest I probably wouldn't notice the lack of drawers until after I'd moved in.

I have your exact vanity (#1) in my master bath, along with the 60" one in the same style. I love the style, but wanted at least one vanity with drawers. Can you use the longer one rather than 2 36" vanities?

As far as resale goes, I think a buyer is going to be so taken by how pretty the vanities are that the lack of drawers won't be an issue.

I put in a dark vanity in our guest bath/kids bath. I got it at Lowes, it is by Allen-Roth. Here is a pic, I will try to get a better pic.

On the outside is 2 doors, but inside there is a drawer. We got the counter top from HD it is their golden hill granite. I also got the mirror that matches and a wall cabinet as well.

I forgot to mention that the 36" version of this has a pull out storage, similar to a kitchen pull out. I really wished we could have gotten that one, but no room.

Here are a few more pics:

    Good Luck!

lauraella--I just bought the 36" vanity you show, above, from Lowes, with the pull-out side shelving. It's reasonably priced and gorgeous! Thanks for posting these pics--
weedyacres, I like the Ronbow style, as well. I think the walnut color would be okay with the black/grey/white granite. Personally, I'd be inclined to go with an espresso finish, or darker, given the "clearer" colors in the granite and floor (no yellow undertones in these, right?)
Just MHO, of course...Have a blast with your remodel!

    Weedyacres,

I am going to be the voice of dissension here.

We're just in the process of working on one of our guest baths, and getting two banks of drawers in there was a priority for me. Like oruboris I like to have little nicities in the drawers for my guests, and since those vanities don't have much counter space, a drawer is great for stashing make-up bags/curlers/hair dryers, etc.

I think it would be the best of both worlds if you could find the longer version Annkathryn has, or keep looking. What about Costco? They often have good looking vanities.

Of course, you and DH are so handy that you could make a pullout shelf/ves for those vanities!

Thanks everyone. Our sink wall is bisected by a tall window, so a double vanity isn't an option (and DH now has the rough plumbing almost done, so a last-minute floor plan rearranging is out of the question). We don't have a Costco here, but we do have a Sam's Club. I'll see what they've got in the way of vanities.

Ooh, just popped over to Samsclub.com and found this one for $800, counter included. I like the shape.

And I find the idea of adding pullout shelves (or an interior drawer) intriguing. We could probably swing that. I'll have to google around for some options on that.

One other thing: We're going to have some built-in cubbies on the opposite wall from the sinks (the kind you put towels or baskets of stuff. Don't know if that changes the drawer equation at all.

We just put in the Pegasus Madison vanity from Expo - espresso color, with white/gray marble top, marble floor, white tile. It's very similar to what you're talking about, and it looks nice (no pictures yet - not quite done). I think your choices will look really nice!

For resale, I don't think it matters much as long as you don't do anything stupid with the floor. In my house, when it was built the vanities were placed and the floor tiled around them, so to replace the vanity I have to replace the floor (odd European sized vanity, too, so no chance of finding something with the same footprint). Definitely something I considered in my offer (but I bought it anyway:)).

But if I knew all I had to do was to swap out a cabinet, I'd buy a house with the world's ugliest vanity and not worry about it.

I like those Sam's Club ones! And I really like how they have the sink to one side for more counter space. Of course, ideally I think I might want the other one to be reversed for symmetry's sake.

Having cubbies on the opposite wall definitely will function the same as drawers- now you get to choose which style you like best. Is there a significant price difference too?

OK, an update: I finally heard back on the Sam's Club one, and they only come as shown, not mirror image.

And I found this one at Lowe's, which is only $350, including top (but it's yellowish, so we'd probably have to swap it out). It's a more true espresso color, and it's got lots of drawers. (pardon the photo quality; it's a photo of a newspaper ad, as I couldn't find it online)

So suddenly I'm feeling the urge to be more budget-conscious, as the Ronbows are $1100 each. Thoughts/opinions?

Costco just got a new one in our local store that I thought was a knockout. And cheap! It'd be great with Carara marble. It's not online yet, but these two are:

You can probably find the Ronbow vanities cheaper than $1000 online. I bought mine online w/no sales tax, and the single sink one was $880 without the granite top. This was considerably less than at the kitchen design store I first saw them in. Having said this, however, I wouldn't say the quality justifies this high price. Spending less than half the Ronbow amount on a vanity you might find at Lowe's or Costco seems like a good deal. I don't regret my purchase because I loved the style and was able to get all of the sizes I needed for my bath. If you can find something that's the right size/style and most important, the right price...sounds like you've got a winner.

What sites did you use to find vanities? I've been going crazy trying to find a budget priced vanity.

I bought my vanities at Kitchenbath.com. Great service and the best prices for Ronbow that I found. Ugly website tho!

Here is a link that might be useful: Vanity source

I like the vanity in the ad photo above. I've checked online at Lowes and googled Summer Cottage and was unable to come up with anything. Any idea where I cna find this vanity

anidk: I haven't found it online either, but our local Lowe's carries it.
