Blue Star Range or change to range top ----help, please

My DH is building the cabs. The internal structures are done (in the garage) and there is space for a 30 inch range and for a 24 inch Miele Speed Oven on the other leg of the L. The exterior rails, stiles and door/drawers remain to be done.

Have not yet ordered appliances. It seems that many of the problems with Blue Star have been oven-related on the range. There have been several fixes in V-1 to improve the fit and finish of the top and some for the oven as well but not the hinges.

My husband would rant and rave but we *could* still change to a rangetop and use the speedoven space for a regular oven. We even have some extra space to go 27 instead of 24. The oven for me is really not important -- I rarely use it. I use a countertop oven instead plus a Green Egg.

Should I be scared enough of the range oven (or more precisely, the failure of Blue Star customer service to take care of me if there were to be any problems) to make this change -- even though I would rarely use the oven in any case????? I really only went to the range thinking every house must have a bathtub and an oven for resale whether they are used or not. (We have two showers and a bath tub.)

Also still considering the Culinarian (range) which I do understand is a "better" product. I get that. But I still just like the Blue Star.

Thank you for your patience with this long drawn out cooking appliances decision process!!!!

sayde - if it were me, I'd just go with the Culinarian at this point - I personally wouldn't risk the issue with the oven door, the need to lube it regularly and the often lack of support from Bluestar. I also don't think it's worth the trouble of redesigning your kitchen to accomodate the rangetop. But that's just me - you have to do what's best for you. You probably won't go too far wrong whichever way you go.

If it were me, I'd go for the Bluestar rangetop (not the cooktop), and another brand's separate wall oven(s).

First, because it sounds like--reading between the lines of your post--that's what you really want.

Second, because the star burners on the Bluestar are awesome. Having said that, the Bluestar customer service issues and oven issues would drive me up a wall, but you'd avoid that with just having the rangetop. I think the Capital Culinarian will be great, but if you aren't going to use the oven part of the range much, why sacrifice the star burner design. Instead, get the Bluestar's burners on a rangetop, not deal with the Bluestar oven issues, and and have another brand's wall oven.

Third, you could even save money by buying a less-expensive brand wall oven since you've said the oven is not as important to you.

sayde - I have exactly the same thoughts. For me I am going to stick with a range only because one of my goals was to get rid of the oven stack next to the rangetop so I could have a landing space. I don't really have another place for an oven. For you, since the oven seems secondary, breaking it into an oven and range top may be a great solution.

That said I am still stuck with the range choice. Fell in love with BS but I am worried about the door. I don't love the looks of the CC but I get the value of the cooking capabilities. I could buy Wolf but I just don't love it for $4k. I love the looks of the Berta but wonder if I would regret a smaller oven.

I don't have money for any of it right now so I guess I can stop worrying.

    Sayde,

I think you really need to ask yourself why you love the Bluestar. If you really have your heart set on it, then that's your answer. I personally think the door problem is real and I am not confident that it's been addressed with their V1 range. That said, changing to a rangetop and buying wall oven's seems like a pretty major change to accommodate for a BS flaw. Personally, although I love the Bluestar burner, I think the Culinarian burner will exceed that performance. If after all of this soul searching you are still stuck on BS, then go with your gut and either rearrange your kitchen or get the range and take your chances.
