We had this problem until recently (now remodeling the bathroom - will be using VERY textured porcelain tiles for floor!)

The only solution we had was to use bathmats on the floor (we found slightly larger than usual sizes at Bed, Bath & Beyond - the kind with rubber on the bottom side.) Wasn't particularly elegant, but they kept everyone safe.

There are anti-slip coatings for tile. No hands on experience, so I don't know if one is better than another.

You can fix your slippery tile easy, there is some stuff called Johnny Grip. My friend Lisa used it last year on her laundry room tile and she said she loves it. I thought she was pulling my leg, but I put a whole hand full of water on her tile, and it was still non slip I think she said its a permeant fix, you can check it out http://www.slipperytile.com

The metric used to describe how slippery a surface is is coefficient of friction, or COF.

Most municipalities require tile to be at least .6 wet COF, but even this is not safe in most conditions. Our non slip treatments will typically increase the wet COF by 40-50% making it actually safer when wet than dry.
