Best accent for subway tile?

I'm doing white subways in shower and halfway up around the room. I was thinking of a white decorative border, but that's a lot of white. Today I found some cool samples at a showroom and am thinking I need a shot of color.

1. Lunada Bay glass in Atami silk. Staggered small rectangles in cool organic blueish gray, greens, clear, brownish.

2. Opal Green marble mosaic, kinda like Ming green, 1/2" squares, greens/whites/grays.

Which sounds better? Or looks better, if you care enough to search? Sorry, I can't get the hang of posting photos right now.

The marble is more classic, but the glass is very subtle and in the running bond pattern is less modern. It's also reminiscent of seawater to me, and I like that.

I apologize for no pics and hope for some expert opinions.

Thanks!

Pretty! I love the Lunada Bay, couldn't find the Opal Green marble mosaic...

Well, I certainly can't call myself an "expert opinion", but after much careful consideration I chose to go more with your option #2. I am doing white subways, with a band of 2"x3" frosted sea-glass, then a double or triple (haven't decided yet) row of 3/4" Italian glass blend in shades of sea-glass green, and another row of the 2x3s. The top and bottom of the decorative band will be white pencil liners, to ease with the transition to the subways. Mine is for a kids' bath, so I really wanted to go with something fresh, not too serious, but still somewhat sophisticated. Either way you're not going to go wrong, they both sound gorgeous, it depends on what kind a look you're going for - classic opulence, or modern spa-like...

Thanks, jenn. Your bath sounds very pretty.

Not too serious is a good way to put it. The bath is period, so lot's of white as I mentioned, china sink w/ chrome legs, traditional fixtures. I have a vintage large glass towel rod for it.
Because of all that, I'm leaning toward the glass tile to pick up the gleam of chrome and glass elsewhere, and because it's unexpected, but not too modern.
I love the marble too, it's a very subtle pale green and classic.

Guess I just have to keep looking at my samples in different places. Maybe later I can post some pics.

Here are two ideas. I don't think I would really like the Lunada Bay with the white subways. Maybe a clear glass tile instead in a color. Here's two design ideas from the Susan Jablon site. I like the decorative border with your vintage look. You can also use her tile to do a 1" X 1" checkerboard floor with a border around it and it won't be expensive at all.

You can also blend iridescent and marbleized glass tile with the white field tile. Also, you can do patterned borders. You can design them right on her site too.

Both choices sound very nice, the marble sounds beautiful.
Here are a few pics of some of our new bathrooms. Each has their own decorative band for some variety. These baths also are fairly classic, with chrome fixtures, hex floor tile, etc. The new twist for me was the pebble shower floors which we love. 3 of these baths are kid baths and they seem to think they look great.

You can also do a decorative border with the mosaics. Did this one at the Susan Jablon site. It looks very expensive but isn't. A mix of clear glass, iridescent glass, and marbleized and sold glass, you can get it all made up as a border. Pair it with inexpensive plain glass tile on the floor, and you have a beautiful vintage bath.

Beautiful, I love the colors and think it would be stunning.

I didn't know those top tiles were by Lunada bay...maybe I did...I just thought they were called Sumi or something..point being, I love them. It's a no brainer for me. I regret not doing that for my kitchen backsplash to this day.

3m, yes, the glass type is called sumi-e, color atami, finish silk.

It seems everyone likes the glass. I think they would both work, but is the glass too mod for a period bath? It would be a small border, maybe 3-4 inches. I just don't want it to look dated in 10 years, know what I mean?

You give me a good idea, though. If I don't use these in the bath, maybe I'll put them in the kitchen, which will happen next year.

    > I just don't want it to look dated in 10 years, know what I mean?

Well, that's always the thing, isn't it? I'm old enough to remember my dad tiling their bath with 1" tiles to be stylish back in the 60's, and also all the debate about what to do to get rid of them in the mid-70s.

I should maybe have said that I've never seen any fancy tile treatment that didn't date, but I still plan to do accent tile even though I know I'll regret it in 15 years time. By then I can think of something else to do. :)

Well, yes and no. I think the glass tile could date, but the small marble mosaic is pretty classic.

I guess the real questions are, do I care, and which do I like now?

I'll let y'all know if I get there...

Lunada Bay also has coordinating cornice and liner bars for their glass tile. They are really beautiful. That might be too much, too different from the subways, though.

I have Lunada Bay in my Kitchen and LOVE IT. The glass tile was expensive, but the glass bars were outrageous. I don't regret spending the money.

Here is a pic of my Lunada Bay...hope I did this right. I still have to do something with those outlets.

I used the 1 x 2, but gives you an idea

Nice, debbie_2008. I love how the liners match the cabinets so well.

Well, that was weird. I got that" Message Rejected because of same subject line" window, but here it is anyway. Odd.

Very pretty debbie. Can you tell me what color you used?

I struggled with the decision to put white ceramic subways with stone(ish) or glass accents for many months and just couldn't decide. I love them both. In the end I decided to use stone on the floor and for accents and use glass on the walls. Somewhere along the line I completely forgot about the subways.
