Do I need to match cabinet hardware to other bathroom fixtures?

I am having a dilemma in selecting cabinet hardware for our master bathroom. We have a dark slate floor and countertop, and the cabinets are a coffee-stained maple. The faucets and hardware (towel bars etc.) are polished chrome. So, I first tried polished chrome cabinet hardware to match the other metal in the room, but it seemed too bright for the cabinets and floors. Is it a designer no-no to use another finish on the cabinets? Any advice you have would be great!

Katherine, you can mix and match. We have darker slate (Indian Autumn) and our cabinets are cognac, we have nickle and chrome fixtures but for the cabinets we used worn pewter. We decided to stay in the same color family, i.e. silvers, but Just Julie is absolutely right, you should just use what you like in the end it will look great.

Use what you like. Choose something you will love to look at every day. Not knowing what 'designers' think... matchy-matchy isn't necessary.

Cabinet hardware is such an easy thing to change... if you're worried about resale, buyers don't usually huff and puff about hardware.

Share some pics of your existing cabs and BR finishes and your choices- we love voting!

I spent months (cuz it took us over a year to do our Basement BR) picking hardware to match. I did get all shiny chrome and love how it all relates. But my existing upstairs cabinet hardware doesn't match the fixtures at all, and I never gave it a second's thought when we bought the house, and I would hazard a guess that no one has ever even noticed. Think of the cabinets as furniture- I bet you have rooms in your house where the furniture hardware does not all match!

I have brushed pewter knobs and hinges on the cabinets.

Polished chrome sink faucet.

Oil-rubbed bronze sconces on either side of the mirror.

To some the mixed look is fine, others need everything perfectly matched.

I was wondering the same thing, so I went browsing at model homes. They mixed finishes and everything still looked great.

We did polished chrome faucets and oil-rubbed bronze knobs on the vanity. I like how the vanity looks like a separate furniture piece due to the ORB knobs...gives it a unique feel.
