Should I use copper, stainless steel, or iron pipe in my HVAC system?
Comments (3)Finally went with iron pipe. There were more differences in the bids than I originally understood. The contractor doing the copper and stainless steel were not going to insulate the pipes. This was important because of the problems with the pipes sweating during the cooling season. Mold is going to happen if the pipes are not well insulated. The company we hired specializes in replacing this type of pipes. The other company is more of a do it all company. They said they could turn off the heating water for an hour or two but then turn it on again so it wouldn't get too cold. The iron should last 30 years. The old ones lasted 50. Iron will rust. To prevent rusting from the outside the pipes need to be insulated with a airtight well sealed insulation. They will also rust from the inside from the oxygen dissolved in the water. Once the oxygen is used up the rusting stops. Of course it is necessary to add more water because of leaks etc. so the rusting never fully stops. The stainless steel probably would have lasted the longest because it doesn't rust. The copper won't rust either. The downside of copper is that it is soft. The water runs through the pipes all the time and the turbulence wears the pipes. I am told they get pin holes and probably would last the least time. I will probably never know if we really made the right decision, but we needed to go with something and iron it was. The project started two weeks ago and it was a big project that didn't go as smoothly as planned. The water thus the heat was off much more than expected. The old pipes were in such bad shape the connections were very hard to make. Heat was off for long stretches of time. Never do this project in the winter....See MoreStainless Steel Drawers in your cabinets?... What do you think?

Comments (22)Our kitchen has a wall of windows facing East and the bright morning sun reflects off of the SS refrigerator, dishwasher, range, backsplash, & hood, built in microwave and 2nd oven - it’s blinding! I hate to close the shades just because of the appliances. How can I cover up some of what’s reflecting? I’ve been told this perfectly good sub-zero fridge door isn’t “panel ready” and I’d have to buy a completely new fridge! We can remove the range backsplash, but that creates another problem to deal with - the unprotected wall with a granite border that we thought was all granite behind the backsplash. Is there such a thing as “high quality contact paper”?...See MorePOLL: What is the most useful kitchen utensil?
Comments (104)We recently installed an induction cooktop and got all new pots and pans. I now fry and saute with a semi-stiff 'flipper' spatula in my right hand and a all-silicone spatula in left, to avoid lifting the pan off the induction surface. Works a charm!...See Moredeanb
