Laptop hadn't been used for 8 months so there was a zillion updates and took forever.

Any hints for installing ZA without the toolbar and search feature?

I would not install Zone Alarm on a Windows 7 computer, if that's what you're suggesting.

What Anti Virus is installed?

The MS firewall on Windows 7 and newer is fine. No need for a third party firewall.

Most softwares If you visit their support sites will have direct downloads. But its not always in plain view. Maybe I've visited support sites too much for too many years.

I never have liked 3rd party firewalls.. but understand some are accustomed to them....

Thanks Mikie, again! It is the same one I tried to install. It has their toolbar. Its almost impossible to get rid of it once installed. They have made it mandatory to take their seach toolbar with the free ZA. Probably even throw it in with the paid version.

Last year you could install by clicking 'skip all offers' but even clicking it installs the search toolbar.

It does, but they say it's a one way Firewall, you can Google XP Firewall

It's been said that the xp Firewall blocks incoming, but not out going, I'd have to read it again to see exactly how inadequate some claim it is.....

Snidely, it has the old Windows Firewall which is supposed to be unsafe.

Apparently it is a one-way firewall. I'm holding on to my XP desktop and laptop until they croak. Both run well and do what I need them to do.
