This is definitely very much on the lighter side ...

There's a fascinating article in the New York Times about rationalization of choices made that made me think of this place. Very interesting read, very amusing too so read this, be diverted and realize that maybe, just maybe, folks who have already made purchases may be the wrong ones to get feedback from! :-)

I'm in the process of a new car purchase myself and am very much in the la-la-la rationalize-rationalize-rationalize mode so am now going to try very hard not to be like the M&M-choosing, blue-hating capuchin monkey.

i wonder how this applies to Van Halen's disdain for brown m&ms? :) well..disdain maybe a little harsh :)

Great story, thanks! I got into a heap of trouble on a thread in another forum about the DrectBuy service, when I noted that the people who had posted how wonderful the company is had probably been trying to justify their $5000 "membership" thru the principle of cognitive dissonance. Did I ever get replies on that one! LOL!

I agree with that being a great story! The other day I was talking with a friend about some of my already-made TKO purchases as well as my hope-to-be realized big ideas for making my dream kitchen. After listening to me a bit, she asked me with a tone of great incredulity: WHY??? Having had similar conversations with other non-TKO friends, I decided to pull the plug and answered, simply: "Because I want it!" That not only ended the probing, but it also left me feeling a tad smug. Those four little words served me with the best rationalization and easiest cognitive dissonance of all!
