another questions about 27 inch gaggenau steam oven

15 years ago

I just won an ebay purcahse on this. I was reading that the door opens 180 degrees. However, I plan to install it next to a wall. How much clearance do I need if it it is next to a wall so that I can take the steam trays out? (I purchased the discontinued 27 inch combi steam, 231610. )

Also,, if you have know these item numbers, can you tell me if 231 corresponds to a right hinge or left hinge? The listing said "right", which someone on this forum said was right hinged. However, the ebay listing showed a left hinged unit (although in retrospect it might have been a standard picture not of the actual unit), and when I called, he confirmed that it was a left hinge unit. Does anyone know what the "610" stands for?

The unit I purchased has an aluminum finish. Would this look very wierd if doubled up with a stainless convection oven from another manufacturer? I have not been able to find the discontinued 27 inch gaggenau ovens anywhere.

    ed231-610
    23 = 27" designation
    1 = left hinge. (even # for right, odd for left in the third digit.)
    6 = north america
    10 = stainless steel

    The oven needs to be installed level, so its "stay put" door can do just that when you open it. you can get pans in and out with the door open to 90 degrees, the issue will be smashing your hand against the wall with the handle if it is too close.

    for the EB oven below it, the same 90 degree and level rules apply, but when you slide the pans and racks out with that little clearance, you will only be able to grab onto one side and the front, rather than each side. i don't suggest this because that is awkward and heavy, not to mention hot.

    You don't want to install the Gagg right up against a wall--the more you can open the door past 90 degrees, the happier you will be. The handle sticks out about 1.5". So, you want filler or a slim cabinet between the oven & the wall. The steam oven is supposed to be installed no lower than countertop height, for the gravity drain to work, so having the hinge on the opposite side of the wall would generally block any landing space you would have next to the oven. (Ours is installed above countertop height, but it didn't have to be, because our drain hose goes straight down through the floor to a drain pipe, not the more typical connection at a sink.)

    A friend of ours installed the aluminum finish combi steam alongside stainless appliances and it looks different but OK.

    By the time we ordered ours, the stainless finish was available. Our 27" combi & convection oven are about 3 years old.

    We had the filler piece made into a useful pullout:

    Foodie3, thank you for the coding breakdown! Now I know my ebay seller was really confused, he has listed an aluminum finish with the 610 number (besides telling me at first it was right hinged with the 231 prefix, then changing it to left after I called). Thank goodness the hinging worked out for me; I guess that I'll just have to see what I get for a finish when it arrives. I am pretty sure it is aluminum otherwise why would it be on clearance and discontinued? The ebay seller is markdown madness and he is very nice to talk to.If anyone is purchasing from him they may want to call first and have him physically look at the unit before bidding to verify the hinging and the finish.
    Also, great advice bout the door. thanks!

    gizmonike, that is a beautiful wall of cabinets (actually, I peeked at the rest of your kitchen and it is drop dead gorgeous)! I love your pullout pantry, that is a clever solution. Those stainless ovens are great together! Does your friend have her aluminum oven paired above a stainless steel oven or is it a little further away from the stainless steel?

    Do you think I could install the 27 inch oven towards the right side of a 36 inch cabinet and have the cabinet maker create doors for the remaining 9 inches, to hold those extra baking trays? How wide is your pullout, is it about 9 inches?
