Take this with a grain of salt, but I think that anything that smells- especially a solvent smell (or new car smell) is probably not good from you. Also some smells are added to cover up or change the smell. Also aerosol are bad for the lungs. Bleach is not good .. Baking soda, is fine as a cleanser (as far as I know)..

So my rule is, don't use sprays, and avoid breathing any of these products. Toxic is pretty strong language, but maybe Bill V. will give you his opinion of a certain grout sealer called "Stand and Seal"- it's deadly.

I have to agree; most any cleaning-type product that has a detectable odor cannot be good for the lungs. What you smell are tiny chemical compound molecules that get into the nose and then are carried into the lungs. Hopefully most of these minute particles are either exhaled or absorbed into the body and then excreted before they can do any damage to vital bodily tissues.

Yes, Shelia Shine contains a lot of somewhat nasty chemicals. However, did you know that even Wite-out has a MSDS for it!

Keep in mind also that shelia shine requires very litle for use. I work for a catering company and we use shelia shine every day. We only go through 3-4 gallons per year. A quart would probably last a regular house 5+ years.

I avoid aerosols if at all possible. If I must use one, which is rare, I try to hold a rag around the spray area in order to confine the amount that disperses into the air. I have not used Sheila Shine, though.

Here are a couple of stainless steel cleaner alternatives to the toxic ones (BTW, my appliance store left me with a can of Weiman's when they installed my SS hood - I tried it once, it worked great, but the smell lasted for DAYS! Ew.) There are other SS cleaner products on the market that are non-toxic, likely Whole Foods carries one or two.

I use Sheila Shine, but I wouldn't use the aerosol (I always try to avoid aerosols). The smell lasts a very short time, very little product is required, and it is only used once every couple weeks or so.

As little as I use SS cleaner, I'd be more worried about daily hairspray use.
