HELP . . . New Anti-spyware Has Screwed Up My Laptop!!

. . . HELP!!!

I read through all your recommendations on the Anti-spyware thread here yesterday. I then uninstalled my old Norton Antivirus software, installed both Super Antispyware and Malwarebytes. Ran them both using their long /total scans . . . and now my laptop keeps turning itself off every 2 minutes or so!

And, the Super Antispyware keeps popping up up the same box asking me if I would like to download the newest version. OMG, I just downloaded the last version yesterday afternoon! I did click "Yes" the second time the box popped up. It did something to my laptop, but the very same box keeps popping up.

I did run a quick scan with both the MWB and SASW this morning to see if either of them could pick up a stray worm, etc. Both scans came out negative.

Something is very wrong and I have no idea how to fix it myself.

Oh, and the Super Antispyware will not allow itself to be uninstalled! I am really stressed out and concerned that some thing has ruined my laptop.

I was thinking that perhaps I should go back to the Super Anti-Spyware site using DH's computer here in the study, and see if I can download the uninstall program for it on a cd and then put that into my laptop to try and uninstall it. The problem is, I'm petrified that it will somehow screw up DH's computer, which he needs for his work. That would be a huge, huge disaster for him and the entire office :~X

Oh and, no, the battery is not dying; it's plugged into a working wall outlet.

I could sure use some advice right about now :~O

Oh I am so sorry if my post led you to this. I downloaded the malwarebytes and used it with no problems. Didn't try the Antispyware though. I sure hope you figure it out. Keep us posted please.

You should be able to go into your settings (are you on Windows?) and restore to an earlier time.

Go to Control Panel, then to System and Security and then to Action Center. Then, chose "restore your computer to an earlier time". Chose a date before you made all the changes.

I'm also sure that using the uninstall program will take the SuperSpyware out.

Why did you uninstall your Norton? That is a virus program. The two you installed are for Spyware and do not protect your computer from virus'. They are two completely different things. If you did not use the Norton Uninstall tool to remove your Norton, that is probably your problem. Go to the Norton website and get the uninstall tool and completely remove Norton. Then I would re-install it, if you do not have another antivirus program. If you do not want to reinstall Norton after using the removal tool, you can go to Microsoft website and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and it has anti-virus. Be sure you have completely removed Norton before installing any other antivirus, because it will conflict with other programs.

If you need more help, go to the Computer Help forum on Gardenweb. They have some very knowledgeable and helpful people there.

You should not run the super antispyware at the same time as Malaware bytes. I have not used it in my computer; hub used it but I don't have knowledge of it. I know that some of the programs can do more harm then good if you don't know what you're clicking when something does pop up.

Try to uninstall Malaware Bytes. Then reboot & open super anti spyware & try to update it. I have a feeling that it keeps popping open because there is no update. If it does not update; just close it.

Did you install the Microsoft Security Essentials? You want to scan with that. Reboot & scan with super antispyware (SAS).

Another thing to do would be to install the portable SAS portable on a thumb drive & scan with it.

There are trojans going around that do similar to what you're saying.

I have no advice about your computer because I know less than you about such things, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that messing with your husband's computer is not a good idea. LOL

You do not need to remove MalwareBytes. It does not conflict with SuperAntiSpyware. Neither program runs unless you manually do a scan so there is no conflict between them. I use both programs on my computer and occasionally one with catch something the other missed.

Ditto on the advice to NOT use your DH's computer to remedy the situation. Does your DH's office have an IT person, or perhaps whomever initially set up his office computer systems that could help you with the issue?

DH laptop (Windows) got a horrible trojan virus several months ago. This is what I did:

Restore it to a date/time before you installed the new software.
    Go to CNET and Download:

    Webroot

He hasn't had any problems since, and his computer is much faster now - I also installed MemTurbo PC Optimizer.

I have a Mac now, but Restore to a Previous date saved my life a couple of times with my PC's. You will be really happy if you take that advice!

I can't help, but when you get it fixed, install the NEW Norton. It's a thousand times better than the older version.

McAffee gave me a virus. No kidding.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!
Your advice worked and my computer is almost back to normal.
Goldie: that was my first thought, too (LOL)!

Mary Lu, it wasn't you at all; just me trying to do too much :~)

I basically just followed Camp56 and Ideefixe's instructions and it worked! I can't thank you both enough for taking the time to walk me through it!!

Rose: the thumb drive idea is a good one for future problems. I never would have thought of that. Thanks!

Olychick: you know, I'm embarrassed to say that I had no idea about that Restore feature. In the past, whenever I've had a problem DH has fixed it for me. I need to be more proactive.

    Allison: thanks for those recommendations.

WIP: yes, they use a small outside IT firm; nobody in-house except DH. I was going to call them next if I couldn't find a solution here.

Oakley: you're kidding?!? I made a mistake earlier saying that I deleted Norton, it was MacAffee, which I've had for quite a while. It ran every day, scanning for problems but never found a one . . . and I KNEW something was wrong before all of this. That's why I was looking for anti-virus programs. Hmmmmm.

Graywings: Thanks! I'd forgotten that GW even had a computer forum and had never checked it out. But, I will definitely keep it on mind for future problems.

Chickadee: Haha . . . that's for sure! DH would flip out if I screwed up his computer!

Camp56: thanks for mentioning that about the two programs. That's good to know as I wasn't sure.

Thanks again for all your help. It worked!!!!

    Yay Lynn!!!

My first clue with Mcaffee was that I knew I had a virus (or two!) and I ran it almost everyday, and it NEVER showed any problems! Ever.

During one scan it totally screwed up my computer. I needed a new computer anyway, and many of our young techie friends told us to get the new Norton. Apparently the old Norton isn't that hot either. And Mcaffee was a DUD.

I scan every day, and Norton finds anywhere from 25 to 50 problems each time, and fixes it.

It also checks cookies without me asking, and I get a pop up screen telling me all is well, or there was a problem and it was fixed. God bless them. lol

Norton is great if you spend a lot of time browsing the web. Their quick scans gets rid of junk in 30 seconds! I do the long scan at night when I'm off the computer.

Oakley, that sounds great. Do you have the free version or a more complete one that you've paid for?
