Let's talk Royals...Kate and William

Is it just me or is anyone else SO not interested in the upcoming wedding of Kate and William the way we were when Diana married Charles?

Oh, I'm sure I'll watch the wedding, but I could not care less at this point.

Kate's pretty and all that, but she's no Diana to whom I was riveted to. Of course I was in my 20s back then. lol

I also didn't like what they did to Fergie. Yeah, she was a royal disappointment but did they HAVE to humiliate her in front of the whole world regarding the invitations? I would never do that to my cousin's mother, who is a good mother from what I've read.

So Camilla is welcome but Fergie isn't? Whatever. :)

Also not interested. I feel they're making a big deal because Diana is gone; & I wonder how it would be if she was still alive.

As far as Fergie; it's really sad what they've done to her. From what I remember; Diana also got snubbed by them after her divorce. I wonder what Diana's life would be like had she lived; Fergie's money problems could have been Diana's too.

I almost replied "let's don't" to your topic but decided that wouldn't sound too nice. It's just that's how little I am interested.

I won't be watching and I have no idea what's been done to Fergie. I'm taking from your post that she wasn't invited.

I did watch part of Diana and Charles wedding - as I was busy planning our wedding at that time.

I *am* interested. I think it's interesting to see a future king wed. I think it's great to see William living a good and happy life, and now "taking the plunge."

I woke up at 3 a.m. to watch his parents walk down the isle. It was quite something to behold.

So they're famous people I don't know. It's still an interesting story and event.

I really enjoyed the film, the King's Speech, so I suppose the lives of the royal family members hold some interest for me in general.

Having said all this, I'm not a big wedding person in general! Dh & I eloped 24 years ago in June. No big dress, party, food or extravaganza for me! I didn't give a tootsie then and I've never had any regrets.

I'm mildly interested. I watch the Today Show in the morning and would rather hear about this wedding than Lindsay Lohan.

What THEY did to Fergie??? After SHE was caught on tape offering her influence with her ex-husband in exchange for a half million dollars?

Oh good grief, I mean down the "aisle!"

They weren't on the honeymoon yet!

Stinky, I'm an anglophile so it even odder to me that I'm not interested! lol

However, looking at it in the way they'll be King and "Queen" is interesting.

I wonder if the now 20 year olds are interested they way we were at that age? Kate doesn't interest me at all the way Diana did, even when she was a pre-school teacher.

Gray, I understand what you're saying but they didn't even have to treat her this way in public. Especially what Camilla did to WILLIAM, Harry and Diana. Fergie pales in comparison.

Tina, I think Fergie was invited but politely declined because of William's hatred for her. Good grief, his parents cheated on each other too! There's a good chance that Harry isn't even Charles son.

I just don't like how they kicked someone when they were down and brought all this attention to her. Yeah, she did something stupid, but that's between Fergie and Andrew, and apparently they're still best friends according to the press.

    William needs some manners, IMO.

From what I read; Fergie was in so much debt that's why she did what she did to try to dig out. I'm not saying what she did was right; I feel they could have helped her manage money better or something because she is the mother of the royal grand kids.

My daughter married an English man. They live in London but weren't invited to the wedding :) but I'm sure they will get to see some of the festivities.

I'm only interested to see what the dress looks like. Other than that, no TV watching for me. I have two daughter's in their 20s. Neither has mentioned and I doubt either cares. I didn't watch Diana and Charles wed (way too early and I had to work that day anyway), but remember her death like it was yesterday. I think my generation is more interested in Diana's life and death since we were raised with the fairy tales of kissing the frog (turning him into a Prince) and the notion of "living happily ever after." Who remembers watching the 1965 version of Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren and Stuart Damon? I still know all the words. ;D

    Kate and William....who are they?

Seriously, I have been so riveted by what is happening in the Middle East that a royal wedding is just boring.

If it was a slow news time maybe I could work up more interest.

Oh, yes, Allison! Born in 1962, I watched that version of Cinderella many times. Wasn't Leslie Ann Warren simply gorgeous?

I think it might be a generational thing. When Diana & Charles wed, we weren't subject to 24/7 media blitz, and most of us were at that age when we were planning our weddings or dreaming of them. So she WAS a big deal and such a princess. And, also, there was so much talk of Charles leading the throne. Now, nearly 30 years later, i think we've got Royal Boredom. And William is second in line for the throne, may never even be King in his lifetime, and who really gives a flying fig about Kings any more? They whole Royal thing is overdone anymore.

I don't really care about it, and frankly, I'm a bit jaded...I don't count on them being married still when (or if) he ever gets the throne. So it's just another celeb event that I'll catch up on while reading MSN's gossip site later.

I'm not an Anglophile or anything, but I like the thought of the upcoming royal wedding. They both seem like very nice people with a modern take on being royal. And I'm hoping the fact that they are of the same generation and have waited until they are in their late 20s means that there is a strong chance for success with this marriage.

I was 15 when Charles and Di married. I was actually at the Florida state 4-H conference on the day. We were staying in dorms and a bunch of us got up early to watch it. I've never had a princess fixation -- or even a bride/wedding fixation -- but it seemed like a big deal at the time. I agree that 30 years ago we weren't so bombarded with celebrity everything, so it seemed more special.

I'm sure I'll watch the wedding festivities, if it doesn't conflict with work or something else.

Oh, but we were bombarded with Diana and Charles info 30 years ago! That's when we started using the term "Paparassi." Or howeve it's spelled. lol.

I began my People subscription before that, and Diana was on the cover sometimes for weeks on end, especially during the Windsor Wars.

Allison, I loved Cinderella and wish they still showed it. Nothing at all wrong with little girls thinking "happily ever after." :)

Especially what Camilla did to WILLIAM, Harry and Diana. Fergie pales in comparison.

What did Camilla do to William, Harry and Diana?

I believe Camilla was sleeping with Charles when he was married to Diana. That's what she did to William, Harry and Diana.

I'm happy for the young couple and wish them all the best. Wish Diana was here to see her son so happy in love. Makes me so sad every time I think about her untimely passing.

I, too, remember the Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren. That's when I decided I wanted to change the spelling of my name from Leslie to Lesley. Did it for a while, but my mom hated it, so it never stuck.

I guess I am the odd one out - I have already arranged to take the day off to be up to watch the wedding and make a full day of it. I did the same when Diana got married. I know they have all the same flaws and issues as the rest of us "commoners", but I am fascinated by the tradition, the 'rules' and etiquette things, tho whole royal shebang.

Maybe I still do believe in 'happily ever after', eh?

Les, I spelled Lesley's name wrong above. Never paid that much attention, but if my name were "Leslie" I'm sure I would have! Cute story. My reaction to seeing her in the film was to insist on having my dark hair put up, and my big sister bought me my own tiara!

I think there's real potential here for "happily ever after" with these two. They seem really grounded and like people who are committed to creating their own happiness.

I certainly wish the best for them and will tune in during the day. I find royal weddings fascinating- but then again I love watching British costume dramas with all the extravagant attire, magnificent old mansions, family jewels and rigid social norms that dictate the behavior of various social classes.

What I won't enjoy though is hearing about it on every news and entertainment show. It'll be like a rain delay during a baseball game when the announcers go on and on with insane drivel to fill up the air time. There is such a thing as royal overdose and by the time the wedding arrives I'm sure I'll be feeling the effects of all William and Kate all the time.

And luckily the protagonists in this family drama are young and attractive and sure to provide a good bit of eye candy during the upcoming days.

I find it all interesting probably because she's so pretty but am annoyed by the hullabaloo surrounding a wedding after they've lived together for years. Although I'll watch the wedding
    I think Fergie deserves nothing.

I believe Camilla was sleeping with Charles when he was married to Diana. That's what she did to William, Harry and Diana.

Or better put, Charles continued his love affair with Camilla despite being married to Diana. Diana is gone, he is now married to Camilla, and from all accounts, both of Diana's sons are very happy that Dad is happy. Fergie's behavior, on the other hand, is something bordering on criminal. And, by divorcing Andrew, she isn't part of the family.

Would you invite your uncle's ex-wife to your wedding? There has never been any talk of William having a special close relationship with Fergie.

I'm with you, les. I'm taking the day off to watch, too. Pretty clothing, sparkly jewels, interesting rules and traditions, what more could I ask for? I'm thinking about having a bottle of champagne to toast them with. Would that be too much at, what, 4:00 a.m. or so?

I know I'll also be sick of all the entertainment shows coverage going on and on.

Les, I'll probably be glued to the sofa watching the wedding also.

Bumble, you have a point, some of the fantasy for me has been taken away because they've lived together for years and years.

I blame both Charles and Camilla. It took years for Will and Harry to even meet Camilla halfway. In the end Camilla won which led to Diana's death. That's the way I see it.

    I miss Diana too.

Yes, I blame both of them too. And in the end Camilla won. But Diana's death was due to a drunk driver and not wearing a seatbelt.

I think it might be a generational thing. When Diana & Charles wed, we weren't subject to 24/7 media blitz, and most of us were at that age when we were planning our weddings or dreaming of them. So she WAS a big deal and such a princess.

I agree. The wedding of Diana and Charles was "another place, another time" and I think many, if not most, of us were a little more inclined to believe in the princess fairytale at that point in our lives than we are now.

That said, I am interested in William's and Kate's wedding, particularly because I'll be in England a few weeks before the event. I'm eager to see how the country is responding on the whole. I'm sure there will be nowhere near the outpouring of interest there was when Diana married Charles, but because William is Diana's son, I anticipate more than mild interest and well-wishing across the pond.

The royals have a rich history of leading lives that defy the understanding of us "mere mortals." Are they still relevant today? Not so much as figureheads. But I do think they're still of interest on a certain level, and I appreciate the way that some of them are attempting to lend a great deal of themselves to worthy causes.

I'm not into the royals, but have to say K&W bring a bit of much-needed lightness to the news these days.

Any yeah, Camilla had nothing to do with Diana's death.

Straying from the topic of Kate and Wills, and completely speculation because obviously I wasn't there, but I have long been of the opinion that Prince Harry was not fathered by Charles. The physical resemblance to Diana's "special friend" James Hewitt (here pictured in his younger years) astounds me.

OMG, Jen! I (somehow) had never heard the rumors that Harry might not be Charles' son . . . and probably would have chalked it up to petty rumors if I had. But, those pics, side by side, are pretty darn amazing! The resemblance is actually quite shocking, isn't it?

It's an interesting thought (at least to me!)! In these pics, I'd say Harry does resemble Prince Charles a bit more, and as my mom has reminded me, Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, has that red hair and same general coloring. He could indeed be Prince Charles' flesh and blood with the redheaded traits from Diana's family coming out. And I suppose the "theorist" in me still believes he could actually belong to Hewitt (pictured older here) as well.

    Can't they test for that??

i would place my bets on charles being the father... would seriously doubt diana was that foolish/careless!

Based on those uncanny pictures, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if he was Hewitt's son. I am quite sure the royals know exactly who the father is (by dna) and unless something happens to William and he has no heir, I don't think it will ever come to light.

    I see Charle's features in him; it's the eye/mouth placement I think.

I hate even talking about it because I'm sure Harry has heard it before & I can tell you that from someone who looked nothing like their siblings & had remarks made by same siblings growing up that I was the milk man's kid; it sucks. I ended up having the last laugh after finding out that I may not be my dads kid; then having a DNA test on his deathbed that I was his kid.

I also doubt Diana would be foolish enough to do that. She was a loving mom & I doubt she could live with herself with a secret like that; or what it would do to her son.

That's definitely an eye opener with those two particular pictures, but looking around at others, I don't think there's the same resemblance.

Here's a very plausible shot of charles & harry. As they mature, often kids go back and forth with who they resemble. Here he's young and looking a good bit like Charles I think.

I often see a resemblance to the Queen. Interesting to compare with this caricature.

That last picture is a good one of Harry.

Roslvr - I'm glad someone is the voice of reason on this thread!

    tina

In the last set showing Hewitt, I think Hewitt and Spencer look more related. Not so much with Harry.

I can't believe how mature Harry looks now. Always thought he was cute but he's quite the husky and handsome man now!

Don't know how that family and the poor children and young adults get through all the public scrutiny. Glad the boys look happy. To me, the paparazzi killed Diana. That sort of thing really should be against the law. It's gotten completely out of hand.

Tina, I agree with both your comments.

had remarks made by same siblings growing up that I was the milk man's kid

Reminds me of the "secret" my mom took to her grave. She claimed only she and her brother knew and neither would ever tell ... and they didn't. Much speculation among the cousins that maybe one of the 7 siblings didn't have the same father.

It's not exactly out of bounds to speculate given the extramarital affairs.

Only in the sense that it is not considered cruel and tasteless when we speculate about famous people.
