I am planning to build a 6,000 sq. ft. home on 1.5 acre lot with many high quality upgrades. Builder will probably charge $150/sq. ft. Lot price is not included. I already have the lot. I am willing to spend a lot of my time - 20 hrs./week for the next 9 months. I am somewhat handy man and have engineering skill and degrees, including of Autocad. My hope I can do this in $125.00/sq. ft., a saving of $150,000? Is that even possible or just a pipe dream?

I was wondering if it make sense (save money) to import some items from Mexico. I live in Texas, I could even just drive there. I was considering to import carved wooden panels for the wall, flooring, light fixtures and other trimming materials. How about importing from China? Is that practical?

But I couldn't find any contact information for importing building material from Mexico. I don't even know which city in Mexico has most of the building material stores. Can someone help me on this?
