$2200 for non 8 way hand tied Lee sofa (by Crate & Barrel)

Hi everyone, I'm brand new here. I'm buying my first adult sofa (woohoo) for my 1 bedroom apartment. This forum has helped me so much in the process. I want to thank everyone in advance who contributes.

I know what is considered to be a solid, quality sofa. (ie. kilin dried hard wood, 8 way hand tied suspension..etc.) I have a budget of around $2000-ish. At first, I was excited to find out that the Oasis sofa at Crate and Barrel is by Lee Industries, which has a good reputation on this forum. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/sofas/oasis-sofa/s517014

But then, I found out that it is NOT made with the traditional 8 way hand tied suspension. It uses the sinuous suspension.

It comes in a 100% linen fabric with down blend cushions. (Eco-Lux, seat cushions are 65% foam and 35% blend mix, of which, it consists of 50% fiber and 50% 5/95 down/feather).

Do you guys think $2200 is overpriced for a 85" sofa that is NOT made of 8 way hand tied?

I like the fact that it is a deep (40") sofa and it has narrow arms and narrow backs, so there's no "wasted" space. I live in a 650 sq ft place, so every inch counts. I've seen sofas with wide 8" arms and I just can't justify them.

I also don't need to have a slipcover or 100% linen. I have a suspicion that this is also why the sofa is expensive, because it is a Grade Q fabric from Lee.

What do you guys think? Are there similar options out there that I missed? Is $2200 a ridiculous price? C&B is doing free shipping now and with my 10% discount coupon, with taxes, it'll come to almost exactly $2200.

Are there any savvy shoppers out there that can point me to some options that I can get more bang for my buck?

MANY MANY thanks in advance!

I don't have advice regarding that particular sofa but, my last sofa was 40 inches deep and it was not comfortable for sitting just for laying down or putting your feet up on the sofa. I just spent a lot of money on a sofa that it the right size for me about 36 inches deep. Just my thoughts. So make sure you sit in it before you buy.

Basically your paying $2200. for about a $1400 sofa. Sinuous wire springs done correctly will last the life of any well constructed sofa. Also very few people will be able to sit in a sofa with 8-way coil springs and a sinuous wire spring seat deck and know or tell the difference. Lee is manufacturer and C&B is a retailer. Both will markup the price for a profit. If you can buy manufacturer direct, then you only pay for one markup.

Thanks for your thoughts about the depth. It is an excellent point. But I specifically want a deep sofa because frankly, I never really just "sit" on a sofa. I almost always put my feet up and lay down my entire body on it. If it's socially acceptable, I would probably prefer to put a bed in my living room. haha...

Besides, I'm barely 5 feet tall, so there isn't really a sofa that I've come across that will allow me to comfortably sit on, have my back against the seat back, and still be able to touch the ground. I tried quite a few, and never found one, unless I add extra pillows/cushions to help "hold up" my back. But the pillows always sled after a period of time, so at the end, I would get fed up and just put my feet up on the sofa.

I wonder, are there any short people out there on this forum who has the same problem as me? If so, what is your solution?

rmanbike, thanks for your comments. Do you have any brands or specific models that you can point me to? Where I can find a similar sofa (slipcover, down blend cushions, somewhat higher grade/natural fabric, modern-ish looking..etc.) for around $1400? I want to try and compare apples to apples. I am completely open to suggestions, as I don't have a preference towards buying from large chains like C&B.

Interestingly enough, I've tried to price this exact sofa with the same fabric, through another popular dealer here on the forum. And the price comes out to almost the same. I was so surprised!! Because I've read from other people's experience that they usually get 20-40% off, if not more, sometimes.

I wonder if it's because Lee restricts the amount of discount that other dealers can give on sofa styles that are carried through C&B. Will manufacturer do that? Just so that they can keep these larger volume stores happy?

    Thanks again.

You might do well to look at Carolina Chair to see if you like any of their styles. Theirs are 8-way hand tied and really nice quality, and most under $2000. Plus they have loads of fabric choices. We bought a sleeper sofa from them last year and the quality is amazing for the price, which includes delivery. Really nice people, too.

As far as your being short question, I know what you mean--they're all too deep to sit like an adult. =P

Doesn't matter if it's deep or normal to me. I'm probably sitting crosslegged if I'm at home and uncomfortable if I'm out in public (or with a pillow behind me).

If you have a Room & Board around or another store that does retro or Scandinavian styles, try them out. The midcentury styles are definitely lower.

So, my mom and I (my family is super short) have found some sofas for short people, but they tend to be either very cheap or ultra high end. Ikea and Cost Plus World Market sometimes have some that fit well (or at worst require a small pillow). On the other end, my mom found a $10k leather sectional at a local store that fit and was divinely comfortable. $10k was way over budget, but it did fit well. And a sectional would look stupid in our house. And none of us like grey leather. But it was comfortable. I've still never seen any mid-range furniture made for short people though.

Our couches and chairs age well though, possibly in part because we aren't so tall. Even the cheapest of my parents' couches have gone out of style while still looking new (except for the one the cat shredded).

And you can put a bed in your living room. Put it in a daybed frame and dump a truckload of pillows on it and it is called a daybed, which is useless for sitting but very nice for lounging. Regardless, it is socially acceptable.

Keep looking. $2000 for a sinuous spring couch? No way. Plus I agree that a 40" deep couch is uncomfortable and far too big for your abode. Also, 100% linen is not a good choice. Look for a 100% poly fabric instead. Use the term "apartment" when searching furniture sites. Try Smith Brothers of Berne or Sam Moore.

    Try Bassett Furniture

Some sofas come in various depths. RH has three depths on some of their sofas but having said that I'm reconsidering not purchasing from RH because much of what they offer comes from China.
