I need help matching my existing flooring

I have hard wood floors throughout the first floor of the house. I am remodeling the kitchen which has vinyl that is in desperate need of replacement. I want to match the existing hard wood for the kitchen.

I had one flooring contractor stop by and he said it was a mix of species and grains. He said there was no way to match it. He guessed it was white oak, possibly some pecan, and possibly some fir. I can't remember if there was one more in there as well. There is a big assortment of colors and grains.

I am not really sure what to do. I think if I could get an accurate idea of what wood grades and species were used, I could purchase one box of each and then just mix and match. I have the polyurethane that was used to recently refinish the rest of the floors.

Here are a couple pictures if it helps.

The pics really do not look like mixed species, but being there is person is the real test. Yours look like heart and sapwood mixed. I have seen mixed species floors that looked very nice.

I found out that this is White Oak, select grade.

I am thinking about ordering this from iFloor. They are $3.79 per square foot for unfinished 3/4"x2-1/4" boards. I have 112 sq. ft. I am thinking of ordering a 10% overrun which would be about 124 sq. ft. iFloor would give me 7 cartons for 138 sq. ft. and a total of $522.41 with free shipping.

I am trying to decide on an underlayment.
What should I use? Cork? Accoustical underlayment?

Just my opinion but I have serious doubts that is select grade white oak. Never seen one looked like that. You got any better pictures... showing a more detailed view?

I had a very competent flooring company come out and give me an estimate. They were 100% certain it was white oak, select grade.

Old skool, although jerry t is a professional, I have to say that your existing floor looks a lot like my 100-year old white oak floors. We have fewer areas that have the pronounced color differences, but overall, it looks the same. Are you refinishing those floors too? If you are, it'll be easy to match, just use the same stain on both (We put new bamboo in the kitchen and family room, and refinished the oak using a similar color stain, and they look great together).

Old skool, I am far from an expert on species and I freely admit that. That does appear to be a select grade on length, knots, ect. except for the wide color variation. What I am seeing in todays select grade material is alot more uniform in the graining and color.

I would hesitate to buy that wood online sight unseen. I much prefer dealing with a local wood distributor when it comes to matters like that. Just my opinion so take it for what it is worth :)

    have a great day!
