I don't understand clothing

I decided to treat myself to new jeans. So I carefully shopped and found a style/brand that fit exactly like I wanted. So I bought a pair in blue denim and two black denim. I tried on both the blue and the black, because it's been my experience that different denims tend to fit slightly different. But both fit great. Just to make sure I'd not run out, I did grab the second pair of black ones in my size because my experience has been that when you find something that you fits, you stock up.

So a few months have gone by, and I've worn and washed each pair multiple times. First wash, the blue denim shrunk about half a size, but still fit ok. Then I noticed that one of the pairs of the black jeans was much bigger than the other pair! I know I hadn't lost any weight, it's just that the one pair is now almost a full size BIGGER in the waist than the other pair. I can pull them on & off without unbuttoning or zipping!

How is this possible? Same manufacturer, brand, style and assumeably the same lot, since I bought them right off the rack together. They come shipped already on hangers to the store, according to the sales girl.

I tell you, it's so danged frustrating!

Pesky, you must try on every single item of clothing to make sure it fits. Mass produced clothing pieces are cut out by the dozens. That means the fabric on top may be the right size but by the time it gets to the bottom, it could be an entire size off. (Is this clear as mud?)

Clothing manufacturers make sure to sew the mass produced fabric pieces together using the cut pieces from the same layer of fabric. So if the size 10 jeans that were mass cut on the top layer fit you well, it doesn't mean a thing for the size 10 jeans that were from the middle or bottom layer of the fabric.

(I hope this explanation is cogent.)

This makes sense, yes. Gad, I tell you, it's such a pain. But I'll definitely keep your advice in mind next time I get the bright idea to buy multiples without trying on EACH AND EVERY item. :p

Oh, I dislike jean shopping for this reason.

It's rare to find pants that fit exactly the same even though they're the same brand and style. I once ordered my size jeans on ebay. They listed the measurements but I only went by the #. Ha, the waist... saw so tiny for what the size should've been! Never got to wear them. Matter of fact, I think they're still in my drawer. I'm sure that's why the person was getting rid of them. All I had to do was measure.

Do guys have the same problem? DH can go in and grab whatever size he is without trying them on and never has to return anything. The clothing looks good.

I also have the problem with jeans stretching out royally after you have them on for a few hours. I hate that. I end up with "saggy butt". That's a whole different thread though.

I want to clarify the jeans I bought off ebay, I had jeans of that same brand, style, and size at home. I know sizes tend to change with brands too.

I hate shopping for pants for many reasons, including the fact that sizing can be so screwy. Here's another complaint -- when I finally find a pair that I really love, I make the mistake of waiting a few months and then trying to buy another pair, and they're gone. Out of stock, not making them any more, whatever. I just had this happen with a pair of black linen pants that fit me so well that after wearing them a couple of times, I decided I needed a second "backup" pair. Nope. None in the store, none online. Guess I wasn't the only one who liked them!

Sue, that is exactly why I thought I'd be sooo smart and buy extras! Next time, I try on every stinking thing. This is why I detest clothing shopping.

And yeah, Shee..DH just goes in, grabs something off the shelf and takes it home. I have to say 99% of the time it fits, but I've also noticed it doesn't fit well. Maybe we ladies are more particular about fit?

My DH did notice that even if he buys his size in T-shirts, they are shorter than before. And it's not just due to his gut...I've held them up to shirts hes had for years and they ARE shorter. So frustrating!

Well when you consider how the majority of our clothing is made - and the conditions the workers endure - it's not really surprising that there's little in the way of true quality control. It's all about turning as fast a profit as possible, and the product suffers in the outcome. It's extremely frustrating!
