HVAC Zoning dampers vs. 2 systems

I have received a quote from a highly reputable contractor that I have a long history with for a new Carrier Infinity 96 System. It is to serve a 2 floor colonial home with one unit and a series of new ducts and dampers. There will be 3 zones, 1 downstairs and 2 upstairs (1 being a new addition over a garage). Is this better than 2 separate systems 1 in the basement and the 2nd in the attic with new duct work?

Additionally is carrier a better system for this than Rheem, or Armstrong?

Thanks,

SAK

2 systems would give you redundancy if the system failed. 2 systems would also give you twice as much equipment to take care of and more of a chance of something to break (twice as many parts). Carrier's Infinity zoning system is pretty sophisticated and probably the easiest route to go with a pre-existing setup.

Carrier is OK equipment. Since you're zoning I think the Infinity would be a good system for that. I've heard good things about the Infinity system as a whole.

Just one question: why not the newest Infinity ICS 3-stage furnace?

Carrier has one of the best complete integrated zoning systems on the residential market. You have two major questions to qualify.

    1. is your home a suitable candidate for zoning-layout, size, ducting, etc

    2. does your HVAC dealer have demonstrated experience with zoning? get references and go see a job that dealer has installed.

if you do elect zoning,I would go with the three stg Infinity furnace as well as a two stg Infinity condenser with the 50/100 output split either AC or HP.

    Thank you for the replies.

Yes included in quote was a 3 stage furnce and 2 stage AC
    unit
Yes my contractor has significant experience with zoning.
Is carrier the best choice for a job like this?
I have other contarctors that carry Armstrong and Rhem, would yu recomend these systems?

    Thanks again.

Of the three I would pick the Carrier hands down, for the Infinity system's capabilities with zoning and indoor comfort. Make sure you get all model numbers in writing. The Infinity 96 is a 2-stage furnace; the Infinity ICS is the 3-stage furnace. For the indoor coil, Carrier's standard coil is not very good. You want their tin-plated copper coil, which has an "ATA" in the model number. These carry a 10-year warranty (as far as I know) and are more resistant to corrosion.

    Yes

if you want a competitive quote, then call an authorized Bryant dealer which has the identical equipment or another Carrier dealer.
