Help please! Need 'kid food' ideas

One of my closest friends son is being confirmed next Sat and she asked me if I could help out with the food for the kids. I love making food for grown ups, but feeding the Kindergarten - 6th grade makes my eyes glaze over. Add to it that I can't do creepy Halloween foods (like cannibalizing Peeps, disembodied fish heads, etc) then I really do lose all inspiration. We are expecting about 20 kids for 4:30 in the afternoon so it has to be substantial enough for them to have "dinner".....

I will probably make Shaun's Bunny Cupcakes and Marilyn's colored deviled eggs. I am also toying with the idea of meatballs with bowls of sauces on the side (BBQ, Ketchup, Cheez Whiz, etc) and serving little rolls with them to make little meatball sandwiches. I can sort of flatten them so they are between "ball" and "slider" in shape and warm them in the micro when we get there....

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    garlic bread/sticks and pasta

    Mini pizzas and fruit kabobs.

Love the garlic bread sticks and the pizza. Pasta might be tough because she requsted "finger foods" and no kabobs since she doesn;t want skewers turned into weapons. Don't ask LOL!

Thanks for the ideas though and keep them coming!

Yeah, I thought about skewers as weapons but at that age I thought perhaps they'd be over it.

Little stuffed potatoes? Sour cream, chives, and bacon bits.

Pizza is always good, especially the veggie pizza that uses veggies, cream cheese, sour cream, grated cheese for toppings. The best part of it is that this dish can be prepared the day before. Keep in the fridge and the flavor gets better the next day.

I also like homemade Shake n Bake chicken wings or chicken fingers. The kids in little man's class love fruit trays. Grapes, strawberries, blueberries, melon cubes, pineapples, & sliced kiwi will make a colorful & healthy treat. You can even add cheese cubes to make it more irresistible.

I think the mini pizzas are a good idea, as are garlic bread sticks with sauce to dunk, every kid I know likes either one or the other.

My kids also liked homemade calzones, made with homemade or frozen bread dough and filled with pizza fillings or ham and cheese or chicken. They are easy to make ahead and warm up well.

They also liked the sloppy joe thing where biscuit or bread dough was baked in a muffin cup, then filled with sloppy joe or taco filling. Oh yeah, you could do tacos or those hot dogs stuffed with cheese and wrapped in crescent roll dough.

The "home run" that surprised me was the sweet potato biscuits with a slice of glazed ham for a sandwich, those got gobbled up.

Potato chips? Hey, potatoes are a vegetable, you know. I do think the little sliders are a good idea too.

Beau wanted "green eggs and ham" for St Patrick's Day. I made Wizard/Nancy's cracked dyed eggs and rolled up cheese sticks with slices of ham held together with toothpicks.

    Mini-smokies with BBQ sauce?

I think the mini-pizza rolls and mini-corn dogs would get their attention too.

Who am i to second guess the hostess....but i find that if kids can have an excuse to use a plate and a fork your house will stay cleaner.
Bitty dogs...little smokies in a BBQ sauce....tiny sandwiches, veggies and ranch...ANYTHING and ranch, fruit pizza...with the cookie dough crust, cream cheese and fruit. pigs in a blanket, little cheese puffs...nacho dip...velveeta and rotel heated and kept warm...
tacos, burritos...peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into triangles....
    Chocolate milk...cake...cookies.

Why does The Ultimate Grilled Cheese always come to my mind when I hear kids and finger foods.....

I like the slider idea and mini calzone idea too.

Kids that age like to graze, so everything should be small finger foods - pigs in blankets is a good suggestion, as is mini cheeseburgers (sliders), chicken nuggets, chips and dips, strips of red/yellow/orange peppers and cukes with dip, hunks of cheese, strips of meat, etc, etc. They don't need a lot of carbs, except for dessert.

Good luck and have a great time.

Nacho bar, or taco bar. For dessert, you could make "dessert sushi". My daughter made a batch of it last year that was a huge hit with her friends (rice crispy treats, fruit by the foot, candy fish...) I'll post a picture if you'd like.

Jo, could you please post a pic of the dessert sushi? I'd like to see it.

How about tortilla roll-ups with cream cheese, dill pickle relish, and salami? You could leave them as roll-ups or slice them into pinwheels. My kids love them.

I'd love a good pig in a blanket and some sweet hot mustard. I did a photo shoot with retro food a few years back. One of the things we included were pigs in a blanket but the food stylist made them with puff pastry and some special little sausages.

    dlynn,

Here is the photo. Self explanatory and fun for those who love to play with food (and fish).

I did not make these. My daughter did.

Jo, I love the sushi. My son will enjoy doing that. Thanks!

Thanks for ALL the great ideas everyone! I will run them by my friend and let her pick.

Jo - those dessert suishi are adorable! I made Twinkie sushi last Halloween, but those look like even more fun! I am gong to check with my guys to see if they want to make them this weekend :-)

At all the kid parties I've observed and given, the pizza goes first. Pepperoni, then cheese, then the rest.
