Are you familiar with Acid Refluxe?

Good grief, if it's not one thing it's another!!

I think I have acid reflux. Coming from someone whose never even had heartburn before!

First, I had a dentist appt. yesterday and he gave me an oral cancer check, and I'm fine.

I also have a very sore throat (no tonsils), and I'm tender on one side of my neck..glands.

I say that because I have no clue if the two are related.

Anyway, a few weeks ago when I'd take a pill it always seemed to be stuck in my throat. Then the feeling would go away.

The past week, in the "apple" area of my neck/throat, it's hard to swallow there & hurts. And then I got some mild pain in the chest area yesterday where the esophagus goes down.

Now it's a constant. It feels like I want to burp but can't. I've had a slight feeling of something coming up my throat, but not often.

I looked it up online and it seems I do have all the signs of acid reflux, BUT...from reading message boards it seems no med, either prescribed or OTC even helps!

Any advice?

This isn't a tell tale sign of acid reflux. You could have a motility problem, like DES- Diffuse Esophageal Spasm. Or a myriad of other things. You need to see a Dr. to be evaluated. The internet will not give you a definitive diagnosis.

Not that I want to scare you, but a friend of mine's Dad did just this. He kept blaming his severe heartburn on his "hiatal hernia," after researching his symptoms on the internet. Then he began having difficulty eating solids. When he finally went to the Dr. he was admitted to the hospital, because in addition to the inability to eat solid food he also had a 20lb. weight loss. It ended up being a large cancerous tumor in the opening to his stomach that had metastasized. He died just a few days later. It was terribly sad.

Advice? See a doctor. Really - there are treatments for acid reflux (my brother has been treated for years) but more importantly, it has to be determined that acid reflux is the issue. Honestly, oakley, this is nothing to mess around with as there are some potentially very serious medical issues that you may be passing off as acid reflux. Or it may be nothing at all. But you really need an in person professional evaluation, not an internet one. Make an appointment and let us know - I can be a real nag and you don't want that!

Ditto what dlm said. See your doctor. There is a serious condition called Barrets esophogus that mimics reflux, and like mentioned hiatal hernia.

I don't know what you are reading, but there IS treatment for reflux. There are also many lifestyle changes you can make such as what you eat, when you eat (don't eat at least 3 hours before lying down), etc. Coffee, tea, colas are bad - decaffinated is some better, but it is also the acid in the drinks. But definitely don't try to diagnose yourself!

The heartburn is gone, I only had one episode yesterday. It is getting harder to swallow and like I said, from reading message boards that's a common occurance, along with the various pain going down the esophagus.

I'll try to see a doctor, but we have company coming out tomorrow, spending the night, and on Thursday we're having a boatload of people here all day.

Since it happened "over night" that's why I feel it's acid reflux.

The sore throat is a lot better this morning. I did have two severe bouts of allergy attacks last week though.

I forgot to mention, I'm on a wide spectrum antibiotic which was given to me six months ago that I didn't use. I know, me bad. I read antibiotics can be given with acid reflux along with the meds for it.

I'll see if the doctor is in today, it does freak me out.

Oakley please get this checked out. DH has acid reflux really bad and his symptoms are not like yours. His starts out as true hearburn (and you don't have to guess what it is), then the acid actually comes up if he does not get it under control with prescription meds and OTC. He has had it so bad in his sleep that he strangles.

He has it under control now by changing his diet tremendously and staying on his meds. Sweets in the evening are the worst, along with foods that are too greasy or spicy, or just eating too much.

There are some really good drugs that help this - Acifex, Protronics, Ranatadine OTC, even Rolaids if not too severe. But the best fix was changing his diet.

We've had several deal with reflux in our family. I've never, ever heard of antibiotics for reflux!!! You are possibly setting yourself up for more problems.

The only thing I can think of is h pyloria bacteria (which can cause ulcers) and there is a blend of two specific antibiotics they use as treatment.

Be prepared for your doctor to send you to a GI specialist for testing (as they should).

Pollen here is awful - and there is alot of coughing, sneezing - so allergies could account for the sore throat.

I go in at 2:15. You know, it could be just a throat infection because it began as a sore throat from my allergies. Now it's hard to swallow, and my left glands are sore.

I very well could be confusing acid reflux with a bad sore throat, and maybe it's strep. With strep it says it's hard to swallow and you also get sore glands.

I take a lot of Ibuprophen so if I've had a fever I wouldn't know it, but I did feel like I had a low grade fever the other night.

Let's hope that's all it is, because like I said, I've only had the feeling of something wanting to come up a couple of times.

I'll let you know what she says.

Ibuprophen will cause serious stomach problems, especially if you take it a lot or for a long time. My doc had to switch me to acetaminophen, which didn't work as well as the n-saids, but is easier on my stomach.

Serious acid reflux issues run in my family. My father and his uncle both died of esophageal cancer, which has a 95% mortality rate. My father suffered for years from 'heartburn' and I remember him constantly chugging Maalox. I won't go into the gruesome details, but it is NOT pleasant.

I don't think you've got an acid issue...sounds more like a throat thing. But I would definitely look at your consumption of ibuprophen, it WILL lead to acid issues and can actually cause ulcers in your stomach.

In the case of acid reflux, DO NOT mess around!

When dh had his double scope a couple months ago (colonoscopy & endoscopy) they discovered a few small ulcers. He was told to stop all ibuprofen and only take acetaminophen for pain.

    Good luck today!

Glad you got in quickly and hopefully this will be a non-event.

There are absolutely medicines for acid reflux which work very well. I was on a proton pump inhibitor for years and it completely stopped my problems. I also got food stuck in my throat. After years of this happening, I finally had an upper endoscopy and the doctor found that there was a stricture in my lower esophogus which is where the food was getting stuck. Funny because, like you, I was certain that the food was sitting in my upper esophogus/throat area but he said it is common for the sensation to feel like it's a higher area when it is actually not. They dilated the stricture with a balloon and I haven't had any problems since. Turns out that mine was actually caused by an allergy of the esophogeal tissue which I guess is becoming more and more common. I wish I could remember the name of the allergy. You should definitely have it looked at. If acid reflux is left untreated for a very long time it can lead to something called Barrett's Esophogus which can be very dangerous. BTW, the endoscopy was nothing at all - put me out and I woke up feeling fine.

Oakley - you should go to the store and buy some Prevacid and see if that helps. It works very well for acid reflux.

My husband had throat pain like you describe, and it turned out to be an issue with his thyroid. I'm glad you're getting it checked with a doctor instead of self-diagnosing as acid refluxe.

Strep and possible acid reflux at the same time. I'm on a zpac and Nexium. I think my symptoms kind of confused her but with the sore/swollen glands and red throat along with the "bump" in my throat when I swallow, she wanted me to take the Nexium just in case, because it could be from the strep.

If the swallowing doesn't get better then I see one of the doctor's you're talking about.

Make sure to take ALL the antibiotics they give you! Drink plenty of fluids, too...that helps with the reflux.

I had a bout where I had a sore throat, then my throat closed up. I could breathe, but not swallow, it was miserable! Turned out that I'd had reflux, that caused an inflamation in my throat. They gave me what they called a GI cocktail, it was something with an anesthesia to ease the pain, and Maalox to reduce the acid. I was finally able to swallow, but boy, was that miserable.

I get occasional reflux, and I up my quanitity of fluids. Some foods, not spicy, however, tend to be bigger triggers for me than others.

Hi Oakley, sorry you've been feeling poorly. That zpac is good stuff. It'll knock out whatever is ailing you.

Proud of you for going to the doctor, pronto. Hope you're all better, asap!

Hope you feel better soon - strep alone can make you miserable.

So glad you got it checked out and make sure you follow-up if you continue to have problems.

Hope you feel better soon, oakley.

I think, not sure, that my throat is better. Slept good and didn't wake up with extreme sore swallowing.

The absolute best thing for sore throats I discovered, is yogurt and smoothies! lol

I think I told you all about those smoothies that Walmart sells where you just add a 1/3 milk? Man, they are super and if you're sick, you don't have to lug stuff out to make a homemade one! Low calories too!

I don't think you told about the smoothies - or else I missed it. What brand? Flavors? How many calories? I wonder if anyone else sells them or if they are Walmart brand? (I don't shop there.) I like smoothies and eat yogurt (usually with granola) almost every single day.

Tina, on the east side of the USA they're called Edy's. They go by another name on the west side for some reason.

They come in pretty navy and white containers.

I've seen Edy's in other stores (they also make istant milk shakes!) but not sure if they have the smoothies.

Our Walmart carries them in various fruit flavors, with small chunks of fruit. The Sunrise blend is my favorite.

190 calories with the milk. I guess that may be high caloriess but at least it's good for you.

I'm so addicted I buy a smoothies to last me a week at a time.

I looked them up on-line. You can see the nutrient value with or without milk. Of course, you can make them lighter with skim milk. I will have to look. My store does carry Edy's ice cream, so maybe they have the smoothies. I stay away from those freezers - so I don't know!

    Thanks for the info.
