Lol. I am a really bad person to ask for help if you want scolding for dragging home budget finds with Great Potential (she says looking at the doors leaning against the hallway wall.) !!

My inner conversation goes like this:
It's a really good price (everyone will think I paid a fortune)
Nobody is capable of recognizing the potential but me
I'm saving it from the landfill
There are many worse addictions to have
Life is short
If I get it into the garage quick, nobody will ever notice

Need I go on?

Ha. My inner voice is much more direct and simple.

I want it.
It's what I've wanted all along.
I can fix whatever's wrong.
I can chip out the cabinets I already have in.
I can learn to use a router to do the remaining cabinets to match these.

I work the next 2 (weekend) nights = tips to cover the check.
The truck is 1/2 way fixed.

Screw the landfills, potential, price, and everything else. It's what I want and I'm not settling. Making, jury rigging, you name it, but not settling! :)

I wish I knew something about the brand. Of course, I haven't looked them up yet. Duh!

My neighbor used Quaker Made (sp?) cabinets in her kitchen remodel, maybe 5 or so years ago. Her's are alder and are absolutely beautiful. As I recall, they were somewhat medium to high end cabinets. I am not sure whether the company is still in business or not as the cabinet guy she got them through doesn't carry them anymore.

If the cabinets fit your space and are in good shape, I would say you got a very good deal!

Where are you keeping all the stuff you are buying there?

Well, the decking is in the back yard.
The concrete footers stacked beside the house.
All the cabinets I've been picking up are either installed or stacked, waiting to be.

That's actually the question about the new ones. I've got to figure something out fast.

I went to their site after I posted here. I think these cabinets are actually rather old. The 1/4" beaded inset isn't even an option there. The drawer glides are the oldest type, but I also plan to replace those with a nicer glide (from the Forklift!). As I mentioned, they're a bit rickety, but nothing this woman can't fix.

These are a painted white, but they're in need of another sanding and coat, or I might try stripping them. I've never had much success with that, so I'm hesitant.

In the meanwhile, I'm very excited. Going back tomorrow to pick some up. I usually go on Fridays, but I want to get these into my hot little hands.

Tomorrow I'm picking up my second replacement diningroom table from Craigs List.

The first table I have - regular price at Pottery Barn - is great, but it's now too small for a married woman who does sit down dinners for 14.

The second table - Pottery Barn from Craigs List - was a great shape, but the wrong color to look nice with my chairs. I knew there was a problem when I was happier keeping the original table in the livingroom and making excuses to my husband about why it wasn't a good time to list it for sale. So I finally sold table #2 and made a $20 profit over the cost of the table + the rental truck to pick it up.

The third table - Ballards Designs handmade knock off - is the shape of the second table and close to the color of the first table. It has two leaves and will match the chairs. It needs to be refinished, so we're keeping table #1 for now. Table #3 will sit in the garage until I finish re-finishing the kitchen door I found in the next door neighbor's trash. Then I'll begin working on table #3. And then I'll probably sell table #1. Probably.

Oh, and imagine if I owned a truck myself? It would be bad....really, really bad.

So.
I just made my 3rd trip to the CF to get my cabinets.
I can pack 10lbs of poop in a 5lb sack, my STBX used to say.
I got six of the cabinets home and inside.
There's a sticker from a cabinet place here in Capitol Heights. July 24, 1991. I've got cabinet and model numbers if I ever need to contact Quaker Maid! Go figure.

Today I picked up the 24" garbage pull-out and the corner cabinet that will be a lazy susan.

That thing is a 36" cabinet with shelves I couldn't take out without a sawsall. I lowered that off my truck and rolled it onto the deck. Lifting it onto the porch is a no-go. There is NO WAY I can get this into the house myself.

I'm good, but I'm not that good. If I can't get it into the truck, I sure can't get it into the house so I always load myself. This time I accepted help getting it in the truck. [sigh]

I have no idea where I'm going to store this stuff until I cut out the existing cabinets, but I'll figure something out.
In the meanwhile, I'm getting out a tarp.

Wish I lived near you Christine cause I'm pretty good at stripping wood. You oughta bring along a friend, a strong one (man or woman); would doesn't mind the challenge of lifting and playing tetris with items in the back of a truck. I absolutely LOVE that you are building this kitchen out of your fabulous finds. You oughta document this. Maybe you could write a book to help pay for your habit!

Christine, DH and I once bought so much rough cedar lumber (parking lot clearance at a hardware supply, delivered in several truckloads) that we had to build a good-sized pole barn in our yard to protect it. We never regretted it and pulled beams from that lovely pile of wood for many years, for many projects.

Just saying, maybe there's a barn in your future? (See, I'm just an awful enabler.)

Quaker Made or Quaker Maid?
My parents had a Quaker Maid kitchen and it lasted as long as they had the house. (Over 30 years) and it still looked great.
House sold on the first day on the market for full asking price! (and the house next door went to fore closure but came with a boat anchor - swimming pool)
Looks like they were bought out, so don't know about current quality.

OT-Christine-from all your posts (I've followed them for awhile) I was amazed to see that you are "only" (almost) 5'3'' (saw that on the sink thread). I was sure you were much taller (I must associate all your great DIY competence with height . . .)

I'd love your help stripping my mahogany front doors (yes, 2) because my STBX wanted dark stain. He didn't want much, so I did it. I hate it because they look like mud. I started trying to do it and I think I've muxed them up enough to need some serious sanding. Boooo. It's certainly a talent you have!

I don't really have friends. I know people and like some, but I lived out here in isolation for several years, with only my rather antisocial STBX, waiting for him to come home from work. Then, here by myself and working 3 jobs. What time would I have? I have a real phobia about asking for help, anyway, because I don't want to impose. I did give in once to someone coming over to prime my living room ceiling. I was thinking, "well, I really need to learn to accept some help and he's 6'4" ". I DIDN'T want to. Then, it turned out that he thought he was going to hit on me. Since I don't see myself that way, I was floored, then somewhat cranky about it.

Mudhouse. I have a barn. 2000 SF. It's full of CRAP my STBX threw in there. I'm slowly finding people that want it. I had it rebuilt last year, (that year's project) because it was tilting sideways from water damage and termites. It's cool now and I want it empty except for MY building materials. And maybe a lawn mower when I get one this year. Mine blew up in pieces last spring. I'm wishing/planning out loud.

I forgot to tell you. I traded a non-running BMW convertible for 3000 brick pavers. I ended up giving them away because they were just stacked in the drive. It was before I knew about my STBX and thought we had plans to lay them. I've never had a driveway. Now, I still don't. I did wreck my El Dorado's suspension transporting 100 at a time. I'm into big trades. :)

a2gemini, Quaker Maid. That's encouraging! These are nice, I think. Solid wood all the way around and even the hinges are in good shape. I don't care about current quality, since these are proved! [LOL!]

leela4, It's been said I have a Huuuuuuge personality! I'm so huge I can stand on my countertops and press my head against the ceiling to paint.

'Nuff. Just gotta get the corner cabinet inside before it rains tomorrow. Just another project! But one I look forward to. I'm not letting myself start until I finish SOMETHING.
