Happy New Year everyone! Cooking on our Chambers

We're slowly working on the house today but DH is taking time out to prepare the New Year's day dinner--he insists on cooking the traditional fare: hog jowls, collards, and black-eyed peas. With the Chambers, he has all three pots right in front of him and room to put other stuff - what a joy to cook on! (In the second pic, you can see part of our temporary kitchen--a plastic utility sink and potting table.) Don't mind the dates on the pics--I can't set the right date (LOL--lucky to get the pictures posted!).

I actually gasped when I saw the picture. Is that a Chambers Imperial? Whatever it is - it is beautiful. Did you just get it? I have a yellow 1953 Chambers C - one of my favorite possessions.

Those are GREAT pics...what time is dinner ??? I LOVE that Chambers...and the cook is very hot too :) You are lucky . c

rexem--yes, it's a 1935 or 1936 Chambers Imperial. It has 6 burners, 2 ovens, a griddle, and a broiler. It's my baby and the kitchen has been designed around it along with a few other antique pieces. The only thing that has been done to her before we picked her up was some general cleaning and they converted it to propane for us. A couple of years ago we drove from Georgia to Michigan to pick her up and she sure was worth the drive!

trailrunner--you've made DH almost impossible to live with! Y'all come on down--dinner's anytime from around 4:00 until . . . DH has some deer tenderloin that has been marinating for a couple of days that just has to be put on the grill.

I LOVE that stove, it's the coolest thing I've ever seen! I'd never heard of a Chambers before. Where / how did you find it, and what condition was it in? It's a dream! I've always wanted a wood cookstove, but decided a while ago it's too impractical for everyday. This is a terrific alternative. Great pots and pans, great griddle... I won't make your DH even more impossible to live with, so I'll stop there! I'd love to cook on that stove!

FHB-- these photos of your stove (and the New Year's Day menu!) are claiming my heart! Along with your PS26 hood (looking good), I'd say this is a 2 thumbs up, hands down soulfully good kitchen you and your DH have got going there. Without a doubt, I'm on board to hear more about your progress and can't wait to see the finished product. (Just be careful with those invites to dinner, though. Given the looks of things, I'm likely to come busting through your door any moment. LOL!)

    Happy New Year!

Debbie I did a search for us . I found the great website of the fellow that rebuilds them. They have a few for sale on that site. Not anything like this beauty! I have seen them occasionally in an antique store but they always need work. I think some have found them on Craigs List and I believe someone found one on the curb.

farmhouse: you tell your DH he has a right to be proud...that man looks like he knows his way around the kitchen...I should know...there is something about a man with a spatula :)

What a beautiful range!!! And quite a collection of cast iron with what sounds delicious being cooked in it by a handsome chef. Aren't you lucky!

Stove is lovely, but that cook would be enough to make my kitchen. Collard greens and potting table? You guys aren't living just down the road somewhere here in Georgia are you?

egganddart--we found this stove after searching the internet after falling in love with old stoves found at a place in north GA that re-did our 1951 fridge. I actually fell for a 6-burner Roper at first but nothing was available at that time so started searching while our fridge was being done. As mentioned above, our baby was not re-done the way our fridge was, only cleaning and converting to propane, and we love the little nicks and scratches in the porcelain. We loved it even more when we saw the exact same one the website of the person who did our fridge for twice the price. Granted, that stove would have been totally taken apart and re-done and would look brand new, but we wouldn't have traded ours for it. Besides, we had a great time on our road trip to pick her up.

marthavilla--Your kitchen is looking good, too--especially that red hood and stove! I can't promise when our kitchen will be done as DH and I aren't the fastest and I only get up on weekends and holidays. Right now we are at the stage where we are doing the priming, painting, trimwork, and miscellaneous work before moving on to the next phase (flooring). It's amazing, I start on one project that I thought would go quickly and several hours later finally finish. We did get the ceiling in the new part of the den wallpapered with beadboard wallpaper with the help of my SIL and newphew (posted pics on Decorating Forum). We haven't painted it yet but are really happy with the way it turned out and I will be ordering more to do the kitchen and breakfast/keeping room (SIL has even volunteered to come back and help again, LOL). DH is working some on my pantry and hopefully I will have some pics of it soon to post--it's got old screen advertising doors on it and I'm loving how it's turning out!

Thanks again, everyone! Hope y'all all have a great New Year in 2009!

I love that cast iron surface and bracket, and the backsplash with shelf! How many ovens are there, and do they bake well? Is that a griddle cover, or the griddle itself? Are the burners high output? Not that I'm in the market for one, we bought a range less than a year ago. But I can look...!

Holy mackeral, farmhouse! That is the *coolest* stove I've ever seen. I'm literally drooling here, and the minute the photos came up I almost broke my nose scooting up to the screen to see more details!

Totally awesome. I can't believe it has 6 burners AND a griddle.

I giggled when I saw your pics of your cookware, as we too did the traditional fare today, and my stovetop (though not NEARLY as good as yours) looked kinda similar!

You just can't beat cast iron on gas.

Farmhousebound, is this your stove at the very bottom of the page?

Stoves like that have sold for up to $17,000 U.S.

I opened up this thread and immediately went "da-n!". Out loud! Full volume, too.

    What a wonderful range.

Here's an article I read awhile back about the allure of the Chambers Imperial.

Just knocking off for the day from painting--boy am I sore! Thanks for all of the comments.

egganddart--there are two ovens, one a little larger than the other, a griddle, and a broiler under the griddle which you get to by the handle on the left of the stove (see pic). Don't know the exact output of the burners, but we usually never have to use more than low or simmer (boils water fast!).

renofan--we both love the cast iron cookware and all of ours is either from his mother or we have found at antique shops and DH has cleaned them up. I have to admit it's DH who takes care of them all and who has lovingly seasoned each piece. From your link, yes our stove is pictured at the bottom as well as the picture to the right featured above it.

cookie08--thankfully ours didn't cost close that that amount but we know we got a really good deal on it. We didn't hesitate to drive from GA to Michigan to pick up. The one we saw in Clayton was advertised for $12,000 and that was several years ago.

rexem--thanks for the article! Luckily, we didn't have to do any restoration to ours and yes, this baby is heavy at almost 1,000 pounds (which is why its still sitting on rollers until we get through with the floors!).

Here are a few more pics of baby:
