Comments (2)A ground source heat pump system uses the earth’s energy and a small amount of electricity to provide one of the most efficient methods of heating and cooling a building. In the winter, it brings the earth’s heat to the building by circulating a fluid through a ground loop heat exchanger made up of pipes buried in the ground. It then concentrates and discharges this heat using a compressor and heat exchanger similar to a refrigerator. In the summer, the process is reversed. Heat is taken from the building and dispersed into the soil through the ground loop heat exchanger. A ground source heat pump system can reduce energy consumption up to 70% in heating mode and up to 50% in the cooling mode....See MoreGeo-thermal heating/ac
Comments (9)If you are concerned about eco-friendly and system cost savings, you need to consider the following: 1. Geo-thermal systems are said to have an 18-25 year life span with routine maintenance and then it’s another system. It’s not a simple boiler change out. Be sure to get all the info on warranty, etc. 2.There is an increased use of electricity for the evaporator, compressor, and heat exchanger/pump. Many homeowners are surprised by their electrical usage. 3. Unless your electricity is from a renewable resource such as water, solar or wind, then you are not as eco-friendly as you may think. If your electricity source is coal, a heat pump may result in 1 or 2 tons more carbon dioxide emissions than a natural gas furnace. . However, if the natural gas source is through “fracking” then I personally would not use it due to its potential toxic pollution of ground water. 4.Is your electrical supply dependable? If you have outages during the year, then your geo thermal system will need a bank of batteries or generator back up which will need to run on gasoline, natural gas or propane. 5.Is there any way you can generate some of your own electricity using photovoltaic panels or Dow solar roof shingles? Now that I am re-reading your post, I see you are located on Long Island. Con Edison offers renewable resource electricity. I buy wind electricity from them and I’m located in Connecticut....See MoreHelp! Looking for portable air conditioner WITHOUT THE PIPE
Comments (12)Thank you, yes indeed the hot air needs to be pumped out. I was unable to find ANY model (real airco) which works differently :-( The back of the refrigerator is hot where those tubes are (I can't check mine it's built-in) and their job is to cool a closed relatively small space. I guess with the airco it is for a much larger space. The tube if left in the room will blow the warm/hot air back into the room so it won't work. What I though is the following solution: put the pipe through a door opened just enough to blow the hot air into the hallway - only for the night so I can sleep. Indeed I will have obstacle to get to the bathroom in the night but that's the only solution I can think of. I don't know about that extension to the window, first of all it would run through the whole room and around the bed I guess so it would have been a very long gigantic pipe, wouldn't see the bedroom anymore :-) Feel really disappointed about all this and not sure what to do......See MoreTV above fireplace?
Comments (164)If the Tee Vee and the fireplace are important they will be part of a good design not rationalized into place. There's nothing like seeing someone trying fix a problem that should not exist. Fireplace at one end of the furniture group, Tee Vee at the other. And "Tee Vee" is how I perceive it. Our wood stove (with a large glass front) is in the dining area and has some comfortable chairs next to it in which to sit and read. The fire box is raised up as should be a fireplace place. Never understood the hearth at floor level and most fireplaces are just holes in the building envelope to get heat out of the house as fast as possible it would seem. A poorly designed, "traditional" fireplace is a dinosaur as is using energy for mindless entertainment. As a general rule commercial television (and radio) is considered a medium - becasue it is neither rare nor well done....See Morefsq4cw
