Does anyone have the 'Cane Daybed' from Ballard? Please help...

I have posted about this before, but I never bought it.

I've just about had it with the front porch area of my house that was converted into living space and is open to my living room. It looks like a few chairs amongst a mess of toys. I have 3 kids, but the major culprit for the mess is my 2 1/2 year old son.

I'd like to put a daybed there, but one that looks more like a sofa and not a bed since it is a living space. I'm ready to buy one from Ballard, but the pic is a little decieving, b/c there is a bedskirt in every pic online. I don't know if there is just a metal bar going across and that is why they have the bedskirt on it. I don't want a bedskirt. I plan on big baskets underneath to store some toys.

Does anyone here have this bed or know someone who has it?

The other 2 beds on Ballard, the Louis daybed and the Averill bed have a decorative piece of wood going across where the mattress would be. But they are pricier, and I'm trying to spend as little money as possible. Need to make a decision before Tuesday when the sale ends.

Here is the space it will go in:

This is an old pic and the 2 bergere chairs are now in my living room on either side of my fireplace. You can see the back of my sectional on the left. And my pretty round rug was ruined by my 17 year old dog and tossed in the garbage. I can't get another area rug until she goes to doggie heaven because she pees on everything that is on the floor.

The bedskirts are shown to hide the trundle. If you don't buy the trundle part, you can use baskets for storage. I admit, I'm cheap, but it seems like you could find one on freecycle or craigslist.

jaysmom, I've been looking on craigslist for 3 years and nothing would be acceptable for a living space.

And I'm really hesitant to buy anything of CL anymore with the recent outbreaks of bedbugs. I'm in a suburb of NYC.

If you search cane daybed on AMAZON, the Ballard ones come up with pictures that don't have bedskirts, so you can see the front section unobscured.

The reviews say it comes with 3 wood pieces (back and sides) and a metal base for the bed. That would indicate to me that the metal base would show unless you use a bedskirt (or get creative with a pretty flat sheet or fabric wrapped around the metal).

I am a cheapskate too and for the price I'd likely go with one of the IKEA daybeds - two of those have storage drawer options for stashing toys.

The IKEA beds are not the look I'm going for in a living area. Although the price is great.

Bestyears, I just went to amazon. The only pic I found without a bedskirt is of the other bed offered by Ballard, the Louis bed.
Can you link the one you are seeing?

Can you call Ballard Customer Service and ask them about it? 1-800-536-7551.

I saw this in the first review on it - "The daybed was easy to put together. I took my time and completed it in two hours. I wound up using a drill to tighten things up when I was done.

The daybed consists of three main wood/cane pieces which compose the back and two sides. In addition there is a metal structure that supports the bed. The bed support is slightly adjustable to accommodate any irregularities in the bed's construction.

I did not purchase the trundle option. Instead I will be using a pop-up trundle underneath. I plan on joining the mattresses on the bed and trundle to make a king sized bed when couples visit."

Polly -my apologies, I didn't even notice they were different. Is there a reason you don't want to consider the other Ballard one?

I think your idea for a cane daybed in that room, with baskets underneath is fabulous. You might want to put casters under the basket so that your little one can easily pull them in and out himself. He could also easily wheel the basket to the site of the toy mess (pile of blocks, etc.) that way.

What do you think about this? It would actually take up a bit less space than a daybed, which might be a good thing. And you could definitely put baskets under it. If you wanted a more comfy look, you could put a bunch of cushions and pillows across the back.

bestyears, that is fantastic. I actually really like that. I will have to discuss it with DH. When I decide what to do, I will post a follow up.

Polly, the bench bestyears found for you really is great looking. I was going to chime in and say that in my experience, a daybed looks like what it is: a day bed. Emphasis on BED. It doesn't look, sit or fit in a room like a couch, no matter how you trick it up. Daybeds are designed to hold a twin mattress, so the depth is such that you really can't sit on it as you would a couch. And then there is that twin mattress thing going on...bed city.

OTOH, with that bench you have a cool piece of useful furniture that a little person would and could nap on, but that will still give you a nice furniture-ish vibe.

"Daybed features sturdy all metal construction decking frames and supports. "

This quote from the description implies a metal bar. I would call them and ask.

    Fuzzy

P.S. I have a daybed in the sunroom off my LR. It looks somewhat bed-ish, but in my case I don't mind because it is used as a reading, napping and occasional overnight spot. I just made sure the cover is as tailored as possible and goes with the LR color scheme.

Here is what I ended up doing:

I ordered the Indonesian Daybed frame from World Market. It is not a living space but open to my living space. The cost was $329 as opposed to $849 Ballard bed, and the shipping was half of what Ballard charges. Of course I will still have to purchase a mattress. But I would've had to do that with the Ballard bed as well.

I considered the bench, but since we do not have a guest room in our home, decided if we need an extra bed for an overnight guest, it would be great to have the daybed rather than the bench. We have lived here close to 5 years and have only had DH's brothers here in all the years we are here, so it wouldn't be that often, but it is good to have.

I know it's a bed. We don't really sit over there anyhow. If I post a pic of what the space looks like now, you will all see what a vast improvement this will be. And since when guests come over, the space is the first thing they see upon walking into our home, I want it to look more like a defined space and not just a mish mosh of chairs, and toys, and baskets.

I have 2 daughters, aged 6 and 8. Both are avid readers. It will be a fantastic place for them to curl up with a book. And to be honest, I look forward to doing this myself on occasion.

I can't wait to put the room together. Hopefully this room will all be done by spring. Planning on new drapes as well, going to look at fabric tomorrow.

    Hi Polly,
Oh I can't wait to see! Did you not order the cushion from World Market?

No because I ordered the daybed and not the bench.
The bench has the tailored cushion, but the daybed you need a mattress for.
Thank you so much for directing me there.

I almost ordered the bench and cushion, but after a discussion with DH, we decided the daybed would be better suited for our needs. It is larger, and can double as an extra bed if we need it. Once I have it in the space, I will find some baskets for underneath, and lots of throw pillows for the back. Right now I have some divided bins, from Land of Nod that hold toys over there. I plan on using them as side tables, so the openings are not facing people when they walk in to the house.

Oh, NOW I see it. I can't wait to see how it looks on your rom.

Did you enter coupon code RETAIL100 for $40.00 off ?

Yes, I always Google promo codes before I order online. Thanks!!

I'm halfway there! The daybed is in the space. Still have to get a mattress and throw pillows. The furniture is arranged so it looks like a seating area and NOT the mish mosh of toys.
I am currently making my own curtains and just took a break to pop on to GW. Just hung the first 2 panels. They are an aqua color with a geometric pattern. They brighten the room up so much.
Still need an area rug, but I am going to hold off until the inevitable happens with my dog and she goes to heaven. At 17 she ruins everything, even the cheap welcome mats.

I am so excited, can't wait to post my new room!! In case no one sees this update, I will start a new thread with befores and afters.

I know this is an old thread, but I would love to see your finished room! If possible, could you post pics?
