help picking new chairs for family room (pics)

I am going to replace the two camel chairs in my family room. I don't have a lot of space, however I want something comfortable for watching TV.

This is a room in progress and after chairs , I will replace the round fabric covered table with something more open and also will work on the lamps.

I'm a little confused about what style I should be looking at. I'm thinking chairs without skirts would probably take up less visual space. Is that right?

I would love examples of style that you think would work well in there and also any fabric ideas.

Do you all think that the glass coffee table is too big for the space.

(

I hope that is not dust on the top of that fan LOL

I love your room. The two current chairs look a little crowded. Do you need to have two chairs there or can you go with just one instead? You asked about the coffee table being too big. I don't think it's too big, but it sort of blends into the carpet.

Can you post a better pic of the sofa to see the style and the other side of the room?

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the paint color and the wood tones.

If you really need two chairs in that space, I'd look for two smaller-scale chairs that are still comfortable. One of my clients had a similar situation and she used these chairs (see link). Even though they are armless and relatively small scale, she says they're very comfortable. There are also lots of other chairs out there that are smaller scale than what you have. As far as fabric, you already have a busy patterned rug and chair/ottoman, so I'd look for a solid or a subtle stripe or maybe leather. I don't think your table is too big.

Thanks Cindyloowoo. I'm pleased with the color as well. The sofa doesn't photograph well for some reason. It looks a lot better in person. This is another angle of the room.

    Sueb20,
Thanks for the link to those chairs. That is a really cute style.

I love the green paint also! Can you tell us what color it is?

    Thanks Laurie.
    It is BM baby turtle.

Did this room used to be blue with blue wallpaper in the eating area? That last picture you posted looked familiar. If this is that same space - congratulations! It looks so great. Love your paint color choice. The room has really opened up and looks great. If this is not that room - sorry I'm babbling on! :)

I'm sorry I really can't help on style of chair. It does seem a little tight for two chairs. Getting just one would save money!

    Chloe,
Your room looks great - I love the green in there. I am just drooling over that fabulous wall of paneling and bookshelves. I love your traditional furnishings and rug(Karstan??) I think my Aunt has the same rug - for quite awhile and it has held up great!!

I am wondering if you have tried your bombay chest in front of the windows centered?

Since you have a solid (sofa) and a floral, what about a stripe or check for your new chair so the patterns don't overwhelm the rug ?

I don't have suggestions of fabric - I have to see, touch the fabric myself. But atleast, this will bump you up!!

    Smiles:)

    Polkadots,
You remembered right. This was the navy room.

It IS a little crowded with two chairs. I'm hoping I can find something smaller and without skirts and maybe it won't looks quite so crowded.

    Johnatemp,
We must have been typing at the same time. No I haven't tried it centered, but I will:):)
Yes, that is an orginal Karastan and I've had it for 12 years and it still looks really good.

Your room looks really good. I like your paint color. I do agree that you need something less weighty in there but not sure I would get rid of my chairs. I might buy a more open looking chair and keep the upholstered with the skirt and later on have them upholstered in the same fabric to look similar to Mr & Mrs chairs. I love the Baby Turtle and it is makes your room look even better. Great Karastan rug. My neighbor has that same rug or one very similar and she has had it for a long time and it looks fantastic still.

    Patricia,
I have had this style chair since the 70's!!!LOL
We took them overseas with us and sold them there. Came back and bought them again because they are so comfortable without being oversized. These particular chairs have been upholstered 2 times. I'm VERY sick of them. We are going to keep them and put them upstairs in our gameroom . I just don't want to have to look at them every day.

    Chloe,
I was looking on Thomasville. My mom just got the cutest chairs that had exposed wood legs - they are smaller but did I mention how cute they are!!

    Anyways, looked at fabric.

My mom got this fabric and it looks wonderful!!

I also liked this reading chair...

Anyways, none of these may work. I can't remember the exact colors of the rug in my head!!

    Johnatemp,
I don't get a picture of a chair , just two little red x's. That seems to happen to me a lot, not sure why. I do like that chair that you included inside the message. I think that would look really nice in the room. The first fabric you posted looks like it would work, depending of course on how it looked IRL.
I did try the Bombe chest centered in front of the window and I think it does look nice. I put the bergere chair in the corner where the chest was. If I left it this way, I'd need to slide the sofa down or rearrange the other end of the room, but it is definitly something I'll keep in mind. This is the hardest room for arranging furniture.!!

I've been chair shopping this weekend. It seems that our furniture stores carry such large furniture, however I did find one small chair. It is 4 inches narrower than the camel one I have now. They look kind of boxy in this picture, but IRL they have softer look to them. Do you think these would work(with different fabric) or do I need to look for something else?
    I hope this link works.

I think they look really nice. I like the legs and they seem like they would go well in the room. I hope they are comfy too!

Thanks polkadots. They are comfortable, both for me(with the pillow) and for my husband without the pillow. I'me very short, not quite 5-1 and my husband is over 6 feet so we always have to reach a compromise:)

I really don't want to buy chairs that I can't sit in first and so I'm very limited . Most people want those huge chairs.
