Do my curtains clash with my proposed BS? lots of pics

Hello,

This is a hard pill for me to swallow as my curtains are fairly new and custom. Let me know what you think and please make some suggestions as to what would work in my space? Preferrably ready-made at this point. Be aware that this is a space in transition, not a new kitchen. I was using small doses of orange as an accent color (you'll see the orange on the dining area side in my pillows and in the curtains).

New tile will be glass 3x6 subways, mostly white with some black and green thrown in here and there. The top tile appears blue'ish in this pic, it is not, it matches my wall color perfectly.

My current curtains (on sink window and eat-in dining area):

Eat-in dining area, you can see how the BS is very visible in this space:

Pillow fabric on bench in eat-in dining area(pillows are brown, orange, green and white)I think I could remove the solid brown pillows and replace them with black ones? :

Overall view of kitchen area (black on perimeter, green on island):

Help!

why not go with a brown instead of the black... I really like all the other items that you have that already have brown. I think you like brown too....so why not put a brown tile in there instead of black?

Why are you changing the bs? It is beautiful.

Beautiful as is. Your current tile goes so nicely with your granite. I wouldn't make any changes - love the orange and green.

Are you planning on changing anything else in the kitchen in the near future....cabinets, flooring, etc.? IMHO, with all the warm tones in your kitchen, I don't think a white backsplash is the right choice. With 3x6" tiles, are you tiling a large enough area so that randomly throwing in black and green will look balanced?

But, to answer your question, those colors appear to work with your WT. Just depends how much black you end up using.

I love the direction you're going with your new backsplash! It's a bit hard to envision exactly how it's going to look with your current window treatments, but I think it would probably harmonize well. I think I'd like the WTs a little more if they had a touch of black - maybe just a thin stripe in the design - to mesh with the black tile, but overall I think you'll still have a nice look.

if you really want to change your back splash to glass tiles, what about going to all green-the color that goes with your wall??? that way you don't have to change your window treatments at all! (i personally don't think i would care for a white BS with green and black accents in your kitchen...not with your table, cabinets and flooring...)

    Hello Everyone,

No one shares my vision that the white would work, that doean't surprise me. However when I look at the third pic above (the pic of the eat-in dining area, there is a sample of white glass tiles on the counter. I think it looks great! It looks so bright and fresh!) I'm not into neutral, I like contrast and I like color. My cabs are obviously traditional, but my syle is moving more modern. I'm trying to take my traditional looking kitchen and move it more modern.

buffetgirl - I really don't like brown! LOL! I am trying to work with a situation where "If I knew then, what I know now", I'd do things differently. I've thought about brown instead of black in the backsplash and it doesn't do anything for me, I don't want more brown, I want less brown.

Sherrman - while others like it, I don't. It is floor tile and not designed by me. The tile installer picked it and I went with it at the time. Also, due to the new granite, there is about a 1" gap between them.

Annz - not changing any of the big stuff, cabs, floors etc. Just can't cost justify it. House is only 5 years old, We built it. We have about 39 sq feet of backsplash to do, Dh and I are discussing the balance issue that you mention. Yes, I want to make sure that it will look good. Thanks for bringing it up!

Busybee3 - all green? Well...I thought about that...but just feel that it would be too much green. My walls are green, my countertop on the island is green...I just thought an all green backsplash would just be too much green. Plus I really like the idea of bringing over some white to brighten and de-neutralize the space.

Auntjen - Oh...I am so happy that you think it will work!! I don't feel so alone! LOL!!

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, it helps me a lot. I appreciate it.

ahh.. then I know what I would do, I would totally get new curtains that read a little more modern like your pillows and yeah, ditch the brown if you don't love it. :) I also think the white is fine, totally fine, and I love the tile as you have it. I just didn't know why you wanted the black when you have so many other neutrals. But now, I get where you're going.

The only trouble is that I wouldn't want it looking like halloween in there with so much orange and the black. Maybe play up the greens and black and play down the orange. Or a more green yellow as the pop color rather than the bright orange?? Let the orange be the last color?

and I TOTALLY understand. I did my kitchen 4 years ago and my style seems to have changed and I"m trying to take it less neutral, more bright.

I totally get what you're trying to do by changing out the tile. I think you will love your kitchen more if you sell your existing window treatments. When I look at your sitting area, I see a more modern look in the sofa & the pillows, and I think that ties in nicely with the glass tile.

Do you need the panels on the slider for privacy or are they just for looks? If you don't absolutely need them, you could take them out of the equation or do a tailored valance to soften the window. Maybe bringing in the whites & greens with just a little orange & black in that pillow on the far right. Or, can you get fabric that matches the pillow?

Over the window, maybe just a ready-made shade of either a whitish woven or something similar. Some of the big box stores carry these in generic sizes & maybe one would fit your window.

I'd stay away from too much stark white, though, mixing it up in a pattern such as is in your pillow.

Do you have a West Elm near you? I like some of their window treatments & just bought some curtain panels there myself & love both the pattern & the fabric. They are also online & seem to have good customer service.

Good luck...let us know how it all turns out!!

lizziegrow and buffettgirl - YES YES YES!!! You are talking my language now!!

yes I agree about the orange...I don't intend to add any more than what is currently in the pillows.

I don't meed the curtain over the sink, it can simply be removed, but we do need the panels on the slider, simply to block sunlight in the afternoon (west facing). So I need to find panels for the slider.

I love West Elm! I'll see what they have. I wish I could get curtains in the pillow fabric. They came from Inhabit, I'll have to check and see if they have curtains, that would solve my problems! I really want to find something ready made that will work.

    Thanks!!!

you could do something white and more tailored, a little bit on the idea of your bench, which would be easier than finding just the right color. Even an updated vertical blind of some sort?

    Hi!

that would be pretty simple if I could just go with white. Can you tell me what you mean by "more tailored"? Do you mean more formal/ structured vs flimsy/ sheer?

    Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure what I mean LOL. I see it in my head but then when I go to actually think about it, it disappears. But structured I think is what I"m going with. Your kitchen chairs are so modern...so I think you need something that matches. Something like this might work too (just in your own preferred color scheme/design)

If you do take down the window treatment of the sink window, I would replace it with something that doesn't cover the top half of the window. I would put up a simple cornice with the top even with the bottom of the crown molding, and the bottom just covering the top of the window trim.

Here's a rough idea of what I mean:

I don't think the old curtains will work with your new color scheme. How about solid color curtains with a ribbon trim -- either plain ribbon in an accent color, or fun patterned ribbons.
