Shopping Shock, or how I saved 44% by buying online @ JCP

I am just amazed at this and had to share.

I was looking at curtain panels for my living room from JCP. I really wanted to have them "now" so I went into the store and bought them Their price was not the same as online, but I figured if they worked out, and the difference was significant, I would just turn around buy them online and return them to the store.

My total for the 8 panels was $269 at the store. (This was a "sale" price too.) (avg $33.75/panel)

At the time of checkout the salesperson told me to take a survey online and receive an instant 15% off coupon of my next purchase. I did that.

I liked the panels, decided to order them online asap because with my luck the online price would change. ($21/panel)

My online total including the 15% coupon came to $149. Free shipping to store. That's convenient because when I pick them up at the catalog counter, I'm going to walk 50 yards to the window treatment department and pull out my "in-store receipt" and return these panels.

Can you believe that? 44% cheaper. So why would I ever go shopping in the store if the prices are that much different?

    That is unbelievable!

Hope you kept your packaging from the panels that you bought in the store. Catalog items don't always come packed the same way so you would need a catalog receipt to return items shipped thru the catalog. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I had this happen when I ordered some curtain rods.

rnmomof2, you betcha I have them...just in case.

rnmom; I was going to post the same thing because usually Penneys packages are different then the store package because it has a catalog sticker on it; so beekeeperswife; you're almost certainly going to have to switch the panels into the other packages so bring them with you.

Did both rnmom and roselvr. It won't be easy but for the price savings it'll be worth it. So my advise it to pack up the ones you purchased in the store and take them with you. That way you won't have to head out to your vehicle and re=wrap the catalog panels.

I do 99% of my shopping online, have for a long time, welcome to the club! and always before you submit order, check for online coupon codes, many times you can get even more off and or free shipping to your home..only thing from the store here is groceries, which dh does since he retired..

justgotabme...I am ready to repackage if necessary. There is no way that these are coming down off of the 144" rod. The pain involved in installing them is too fresh in my memory!

A little repackaging, I can handle. Maybe I won't even have to go to the car...there is never ever anybody working in the curtain section when I go, I could probably just use their counter!

bkw...wouldn't jcp just honor the online price?? i don't understand how the store wouldn't honor the online price if you just went back there with your receipt...(granted, you wouldn't be able to also use the 15% off coupon, but...that was gotten from purchasing original panels.)

i've had stores price match items from online store ad by just printing out the ad and bringing in.

WalMart does not honor their online prices in store. Most of the time I shop JCP online for the Wednesday deals. There are websites that "share" 15% off codes that people won't use. So yes, don't hit send without doing a search for JCP codes. Oh and almost forgot! Congrats on the huge score on the WT's!

At Christmas time I bought two pillows in the store from JCP and the sales lady told me about the survery and 15% off coupon. I failed to do it in time. :(

How much money do you have to spend to get the 15% off survey thing?

    That's awesome!

I find the best JCPenney discount codes at retailmenot.com

I've had a JCPenney credit card since 1977 and have decorated many homes and myself with their merchanise. I live so remotely now that it's an hour and a half round trip to one of their stores so I always take advantage of their free shipping and sales offers.

But I can think of one advantage of shopping in their stores - you can see and feel the fabrics before you decide.

My DD found a website about a year ago where I can download a 15% off JCPenneys coupon without having to complete the survey or having it expire on you as the one on the store recipt does. Simply check the following website whenever you need it.

Here is a link that might be useful: JC Penneys Coupons

busybee, no they wouldn't honor the price. In fact the sales lady was surprised when I told her about the price difference. She gave me the old "oh, but what about shipping?" I surprised her with the fact that shipping was free.

I would have saved a lot even without that coupon.

I did notice online that there is a note that prices may differ in store...so I guess that's how they are able to not honor the online prices. Also, the sales people earn commission.

Just another FYI~~i've made *several* purchases of draperies in the last 1 1/2 years(moved into a new home 2 yrs ago)and have made a few returns to the store w/o any question from the store associate. Even w/o a receipt it's ok if you've charged them to your JCP account~~the acc't info can be looked up on their computer.

I was also told by a store associate in the drapery dept. I could place a catalog order with her, and get a much lesser price on the same drapes that were in the store. I guess it pays to always check out the on-line catalogs. ;o)

The thing with the survey 15% off is you can use it in conjunction with another 15% or 20% or 25% off coupon. It's the only coupon JCPenney allows you to use with another coupon. At least that's how the associate explained it to me. That's why it pays to do the survey, even if it's a pain in the...

Thats my peeve about Penney's- you can't use more then 1 coupon code. I usually have 2 browsers open & check out on each to see which way saves the most money.

In my old Penney's there were 2 really great sales gals; one in curtains, one in catalog. The curtain gal used to tell me to order via catalog when she knew something was cheaper; & the catalog gal used to know when something was cheaper in store. I miss my old Penneys

As a sidenote- ever wonder why retail is in the mess it is? It has to cost them more to package and ship the product separately as compared to the item already in the store but they are charging you less. Go figure. Hey I would do the exact same thing as you. Money is money:)

I was in JC Penneys last week in their curtain department and had already done my on-line shopping ahead of time so I was aware of the prices. I wanted to see the curtain panels in person before buying on-line.
The price was higher in the store and when I discussed that with the saleswoman she said she would honor the on-line price. I then also told her that I had received an email that morning for an extra 20% off anything on-line that was only good between 7am-11am. I was in the store at 10:20am and she said she would also honor that!!!
It doesn't hurt to ask...the only risk is to be told "no" and have to go home and place the order on-line.
    Instant gratification is SO sweet!

Thanks for this timely post. I was in the process of ordering bamboo shades for my windows, they were already marked down considerably, but thanks to reading this I got free shipping to store (the store is only 15 minutes away) and an additional 15% off. Can't wait to finally put shades on my front windows, I bought 6 shades for the grand total of $126!!! Thanks all!

I have one thing to add - always check your sales catalogs! A few years back, I ordered 1" white basswood blinds for all my bedrooms - they were on sale on-line at a good price, but even more of a discount in the catalog. The best I remember, it was an additional 10% less. I just had to call the order in. Also had a free shipping code, which would have been quite substantial with blinds.

I think they ended up being 50% off.

I also ordered a couple of Dale Tiffany lamps from a sale catalog that were a little cheaper in the sales catalog.

I have to share my husbands big savings by shopping online. A couple weeks ago he decided he wanted to surprise me with the Dyson-Animal. He looked at the Sears price in the store which was on sale for $549, regular $599. He then checked on the online price which was $399! He ordered it online and picked up at the store 2-hrs later! I am still amazed that he could save that much and still get it within that same day.

kmarcel, good for you! I did the same thing when I bought my Dyson. However, I took the Sears ad to Bed BAth and Beyond, and they honored the sale price (after a phone call to Sears to verify the price) AND let me use a 20% off coupon....

Glad you saved so much, but I'm surprised they wouldn't honor the price in the store. Last spring I bought curtains in the store BECAUSE the saleswoman honored the on-line price! Like someone posting above, I wanted to feel and see them before I bought them; the saleswoman came along, I told her what I was doing, she said "I'll take care of you." It can't be the commission factor - no sale at all is no commission at all, and the brick and mortar store just lost a sale.

Just last week I bought a new sewing machine (not in Penney's, though) and told the saleswoman it was $30.00 cheaper at Amazon, plus free shipping, and she gave me the discount without my having to ask.
