where can i find a nice 13 x 20 foot area rug for less than $10k?

need one that's beige w/some chocolate brown in it and has a subtle type pattern (not too traditional oriental). my decorator has found some that are like $10k. anyone have suggestions for a rug this size that's less expensive?

You might want to take a look at 15' wide broadloom carpet and get it cut to size and bound.

10k is a very good budget. sounds like you may be in the market for a peshawar carpet.

you could try ebay to find an inexpensive rug, then run it by the pros over at rug rag to have it authenticated and make sure it's worth the money.

Overstock! I bought a nice Safavieh 9x12 rug for somewhere under $500. Selection is somewhat limited and the biggest problem is that return shipping is cost-prohibitive. You might be able to buy a small version of the rug first and return if you don't like.

you could build a rug that size with FLOR. It would take about 100 tiles.

Since you are working with a decorator, tell her the price you want to pay and ask her to check her sources for what is available.

    Here's one that might work. The 13 x 20 runs around $5200.00

Architecture - are you a spammer? You signed up today and linked to something totally unrelated to the question.

I would go to a store that sells oriental rugs. You can almost always get at least 60% off the price that's listed on the rug.

There are rugs and there are rugs. When a local department store closed a few years ago and I went to look at the rug liquidation, there was a pile of rugs that had original prices of $85K-$100K. Someone must have been buying them at the original prices, or they wouldn't carry them.

Its not necessarily "insane" to pay for a good rug, anymore than some people have a budget for a Rolls Royce and some people have a budget for a Hyundai.

How far out of your budget is $10K a lot? A little? What would your ideal budget be?

When department stores go out of business, it is common for them to lease space to dealers to bring in rugs to sell as part of the clearance with jacked up "original" prices.

If you read the small print in going-out-of-business sale ads, they state that items beyond the normal inventory are being brought in.

Thanks all. My budget is around $5-6k. I have 2 kids and a husband who tends to spill red wine, so i'm not prepared to go higher than that.

I suppose thats true, I don't know of anyone who actually pays the "original" price for a rug. So many things are sold under "list" price I wonder what the list price means. But this department store always had a huge rug selection and I remember some of the extra expensive ones from when the store was solvent.

My real point is that people can and do pay high prices for goods and services that might be out of our league, but they shouldn't be called "insane" if they have that option and wish to exercise it.

I took a quick look at peerlessrugs.com (have you looked there?) and think that size is going to be a challenge. I think palimpsest's idea of having broadloom cut and bound is a good idea for the size you want. I also agree with her comments on prices and what some people are willing to pay. I would imagine the rugs your decorator has found are hand knotted. That, along with the size, could explain the price.

I don't know where you are located, but ABC Carpet and Home in NYC has an extensive selection of rugs that you can also look at on their website, for ideas at least.

No doubt Ebay. I bought a rug on ebay that I LOVED and had for a few years that was about 9x20 for about $1500. When I moved, I sold it for the same.

palimpsest, yes i am in nyc and looked in abc, but they're in the $12k price range as well.

i think the broadloom cut to size & bound sounds like a good alternative.

my decorator is looking at hand knotted...what exactly does that even mean? why is that so great?

palimpsest: the notion of list price is bogus. even at department stores. please see the link below!

Many of the rugs linked to above are tufted. look at my screen name. these are really not worth the investment. if srg215 wants to spend 10k, there's plenty of room to find a nice hand knotted.

stinkytufted, but i don't want to spend 10k. i'd like to spend around $5k. i have 2 young kids and a husband who likes to drink red wine (and spills it frequently).

Hand knotted is the way to go if you have that kind of budget. Do keep in mind, most of these will be found in the 12' loom width. Anything wider would be more difficult to find, so it would help if you have flexibility in that range.

Do you have some examples of pieces you've seen and liked? The big hit style right now is peshawar carpets which match your description in regards to oriental rug designs.

i am with roxy. for that kind of money i would take a short vacation to a rug making country. see where and how they are made and buy one there. for $10k i would get a high count, hand knotted silk rug! or an antique from iran or kashmir.

Are you looking for investment quality at this point, or something nice that will stand up to spills and kids?

It sounds like you want something pretty subtle, and I am always surprised by the patterned wool or blend carpet available if you look beyond the typical pile vs berber. Did you look on the broadloom floor of ABC?

I know I am repeating myself, but there may be other uses for part of that budget so it doesn't hurt to think outside the typical rug = X and carpet = Y.

Given "i have 2 young kids and a husband who likes to drink red wine (and spills it frequently)," I would repeat my recommendation that you look at FLOR (dot com). The tiles don't seem like plush works of art, but stains and red wine clean up amazingly easily.

Here's a link to another discusion about FLOR and a pic of my LR (see Tue, Dec 8, 09 at 12:48) that is periodically the site of teenage band practise.

i do like the peshawar rugs. but will they stand the test of time w/regards to children & wine?

If I were you, I'd get the rug I wanted and get a sippy cup for hubby!

won't i be chasing people around making sure they don't spill or get dirt or anything on the rug? my kids will have a magic marker in their hands and run past me or something else that will freak me out. i just think this isn't the right time in my life to shell out 10k on a rug.

Just wondering where you are planning to put this rug.

If it's for a living or family room, and there are two distinct seating areas, why not do two smaller rugs? It would be more cost effective and I prefer the look.

The cost of cleaning a huge rug is really $$$.

it's for the "great room" and it needs to cover the area that the sectionals will sit on. it's a big room (20 x 30) and the sectionals take up a large chunk of it. i could maybe do 12x18 rug. but still...don't want to shell out $10k w/2 young kids.

I wonder if this supplier has anything a bit longer in this rug.

Did you look at the one I linked to above? It's the size you're looking for and in the colors you mentioned. It's also in your price range.

I lol'd at the sippy cup for hubby idea :)

Seriously, FLOR makes *100% wool* tiles as well and they're *individually replaceable* if stained, and reconfigurable if you decide to put them in the kids' rooms later on. Until the kids and your DH are more grown up ;), something like FLOR might be the least stress-inducing option.

Here's one on rugs usa for around $6000. There are a couple on this site that I really like, but amazingly they are $10,000+ I guess when you get that large of a rug, it gets pricey!
    Nourmak Brown

I like this one too. I should mention these are 12x18. Not quite as big as you requested, but that size isn't standard in rugs.

I would shell out $1K for a beautiful but 'kids will kill it' antique Oriental rug from eBay, then 5 years from now, shell out the other $4K for a drop dead investment quality rug.

Of course, I'd never go with beige in a house with young boys and a husband who spills red wine...

monablair...thank you...i do like that one. i'll email that link to my decorator.

caroleoh, those are nice too. a little busier on the pattern than i wanted. but definitely ones to think about.

Have you considered two rugs of the same pattern/design, & machine-made rather than hand-made? They would still be quite a bit less than the $10K one the designer is looking at.

If you need one rug to keep the room not looking broken up, I second/third others in suggesting carpeting cut to size & bound on the edges. I have those & am quite pleased with them. You could even have a one-foot border of a different color.

YOu might also browse rugsdirect.com. They have a large selection & good prices.

srg215: Have you had any luck finding your 10 x 13 rug? I am also going to be needing to buy rugs for my house and was curious. Has anyone bought rugs off of ebay? I was checking out some of the sites and the prices seem very good--almost too good to be true.

I really don't understand how anyone can buy a rug online. I have to at least see it in person to know if the colors are right. Monitors and the lighting when the pic is taken vary so greatly. Heck I've brought so many rugs home over the years. I want to be sure that what I've chosen is going to compliment the entire area around where it is being used. How do you do that with an online rug? However, I have seen a good amount of dissatisfied posters who've received a rug that was not as represented by Overstock or another seller. Who picks up the return cost?

As far as the posters who are poo pooing buying a good quality rug (travel to Turkey, etc) and then link to JC Penney rugs, what a hoot. Obviously the OP has something a little different in mind with her stated budget. Also, I get a kick out of people professing to travel to a place where they would be in the total minority and have no idea of where to go and how to haggle with the rug sellers, let alone figure out the exchange rate. Have you ever been to Turkey? Really.
