We built one last year, but we don't have a pizza oven. Our's is in the living room and it's great! It keeps the main part of the house warm, and we've cooked several pots of food in it.

Our previous home, a Georgian colonial built in the early 1800's, was originally heated with a Rumford fireplace in almost every room except the kitchen. All had a crane on which one could hang a pot, but the main cooking apparatus was one that every modern housewife wanted if they could afford it: The newly invented cast iron wood burning cooking stove! It even had an oven! No more large dirty, sooty fireplaces to mess up her new kitchen!

BTW, We used the fireplaces all the time for heating, and they worked wonderfully, but we mostly cooked with electricity. :-)

SV, the reason we put in a Rumford is because we lost power during an ice storm a few years ago for three weeks. Although we had a generator, we didn't have a FP, and cooking wasn't fun!

We put a crane in ours also. We've lost power a couple of times this winter but no more than a few hours.

My husband loves to cook a whole chicken and other dishes on weekends. It's a man thing. lol

But if you live in an area where you could lose power in the winter, nothing beats a Rumford! Best investment ever. :)
