I need help with lighting... I can't think straight anymore!!b

Hey everyone. I haven't posted for awhile but have been lurking and planning. We have our cabinet maker hired, and are getting everything together! We are planning to demo in just 4 weeks!

I'm getting estimates this week from a few electricians, and want to have a more solid plan in place for the ceiling lighting. This is something I just can't put my finger on and I'm not sure how much advice the electricians will be able to give.

Here's a pic of my layout, the red dots being where I think I will need a ceiling light or pendant. I will have under cabinet lights on the yellow cabinet as well (that's my only upper). Am I missing anything? Any advice? Thanks!!

Oh and I am leaning towards and antique white, maybe crackly or aged looking subway tile with a darker grout. I cant find a picture of what I am visualizing.

As far as light fixtures I'm clueless there too. I just know I don't want them all matchy matchy. My ceilings after being dropped will be a little taller than 8 ft.

    Thanks EVERYONE!!

What is your budget for lighting? Are you planning to do pendants in front of both the windows? Or are those dots can lights? How do you feel about the pendants in your first pic of cabinets? Is that a style that appeals to you?

Have you looked through Barnlight electric? Shades of light? Do you have anything you want / do not want? (exposed bulb, marbled glass, bronze finish, gargoyle heads, etc)

I'm sorry, I can't answer your questions about lighting. I just wanted to let you know that I recognized the kitchen you said you didn't know whose it is. It's Klb_2000's. I'll link her kitchen photos below so you can see the entire kitchen, and maybe that will help you.

Do you have lights in front of the fridge/pantry? I have them there and really very helpful. I know the fridge has lights inside of it when you open it, but the pantry doesn't, and my pantry cabinets flank my fridge. So, consider that.

Here's a picture of mine: (and they are recessed lights, but the lens I used makes the ceiling looked curved!)

The red dots are just where I am assuming I need a light. I havent decided on pendants, recessed, etc yet. I've got double hung windows that will have have about 5 inches of wall above, plus maybe 4-5 inches of trim. I'm not sure how low the lights can hang there, but I do really like the look of pendants.

I don't have a lighting budget decided yet, but will likely go with more budget friendly options on things that can easily be changed down the road in 5 or 10 years when I may be itching to change things up a little bit. I dont want to spend more than necessary, but will invest in quality XYZ if it will save us time and money in the long run.

I do like the style of lighting in that first pic, and I also like schoolhouse pendants. My house is a 1905-1911 (unsure of when it was built!) American foursquare. The chandelier in the dining room, has been here since at least 1950.. I really want to pick lighting that compliments my kitchen choices and the era of the house and also make sure I have plenty of lighting in the right areas. I am going for an "evolved over 100 years" mix of old and new and am open to ANY suggestions.

    Thanks!!

I would second Beekeepers suggestion on lighting in front of the fridge and pantry. Also, since you are in the quote stage, you still have some time to decide. Decisions like recessed vs pendants can wait almost until install and adding and moving lights can always be changed right before too but hopefully you will have decided before then.

Make sure you know where your ceiling joists run - it greatly affected what kind of lighting I ended up putting in front of my windows since I couldn't center the lights.

I think histokitch has pendants you might be interested in - there is a picture in this linked thread below that if you click on will take you to more photos.

You've made a lot of great progess - I think once you catch your breath you'll be able to finalize your choices.

The joists run what would be vertically in the top photo. Everything is coming out - ceiling, walls, so we're wanting to run all the wires and whatnot before it all goes back up. Because the bathroom is above, and we have really enjoyed accessing the plumbing traps and whatnot with our current suspended ceiling, we want to go that route again... I suppose that grid will determine some of the lighting locations too, but there is some wiggle room with that too I suppose.

Maybe recessed lights in the ceiling panels that run along the front of the fridge/pantry....

That top photo is actually jgarner53's kitchen, though it looks very similar to klb_2000's (which I hadn't seen, so that was great to have the link!) It's my inspiration photo for our backsplash which I've been working on this week, so I've spent a little too much time ogling her photos... ;)

We got our lights from Schoolhouse Electric and Rejuvenation, and are really happy with both. You can also mix their fixtures with cheaper shades (or vice versa) to get the look.

As far as placement, we have a very similar layout in a slightly shorter room (18' x 13' with basically the same placement of things) and have three schoolhouse ceiling fixtures centered over the space. It's a little much for our space---I think we could have gotten away with two---but since yours is much longer than ours, it might be something to consider for general lighting. We also have pendants lighting the work spaces and the table (but our table is in a corner so there's room for both the pendant and a central fixture not too far away from it).

JGarner -- that's the one.. Thanks!

I put blue dots for recessed lights would go for the fridge/pantry area. I'm not familiar with the kind of output they have, would 2 be enough?

I updated the photo to show where the current wall between DR and kitchen is. So it will be more open than it is now, but its kind of still technically two rooms. We will end up with a header there since the dining room ceiling height is original, and the kitchen ceiling will be dropped. there will be about an 8 inch difference in ceiling height between the two rooms. The red dot over the dining room table is where my current chandelier is and that wont be moving.

Not sure if it would look weird to hang the pendants from that header or not.. I have always envisioned it that way, but I'm not sure I've ever actually seen it done. Maybe that would be weird??

I would need a light over the sink because at my age undercabinet lighting is not enough. I'm 54 and need lots of light to see but when I was in my 30's, one overhead light would have been enough.

Oh, I totally missed that it was a dining room/kitchen combo with a header. In that case you're probably fine---we had one light in the kitchen and one in the dining room pre-remodel and it was plenty of light, as long as the kitchen fixture is powerful enough (our old one was fluorescent, but you can also do the schoolhouse fixtures with multiple bulbs). (Ours was a breakfast room/kitchen combo so pre-remodel our kitchen was the same size as yours roughly, it looks like.)

Artemis - Sorry! I didnt make it clear that it was two separate rooms. I meant to post the new pic with that post but I forgot. Here it is...

Maybe I should put another recessed light above the farm sink.. or would the a light to the left, and the two to the right be enough? Right now I have a light over my sink that isnt terribly bright, and one in the center of the room that ends up behind me and makes a very annoying shadow when I'm at the sink. Would a recessed light right in front of that yellow cabinet help with sink lighting? or would that make shadows? How bright can I make my under cabinet light?
