Maple cabinets, Baltic Brown granite, help with floor choice??

I am in London visiting friends.

They have recently redone their small kitchen with maple cabinets and Baltic brown granite countertops.

That was finished in October and they still have no floors and no tile. They both travel a lot and are having a tough time coming to a conclusion about what would look best.

Not being a big fan of matchy, matchy I suggested doing an oak with lighter tones running through it to tie in the cabs with the floor, but not maple which would be too much of the same.

There are limitations:

1: Any wood used has to be engineered

2: they can't do 'real' stone on the floors because the floor won't support it properly.

Does anyone have maple and Baltic brown and could show some photos they could look at? I don't have time to go tile and wood shopping with them but would love to help in any way I can - including asking you guys for advice! : )

Thanks!!

Is there any photos you could post? What color stain is on the cabinets? My last home had light maple cabinets and a darker stained maple floor, it looked great.

What color stain do they have on the cabinets? Light, medium, dark?

Personally, I think oak floors with it's heavy graining will be too busy. The countertops have a very busy, contrasting pattern that will compete with anything you put on the floors or backsplash. I would suggest looking at maple or birch floors that have very little graining in a different stain. Or look for a middle toned like a beige with brown undertones (not pink undertones) large size porcelain or ceramic tiles. Or lastly look at cork floor tiles, not the floating type. Cork tends to be busy too, but there are patterns that don't have a lot of contrast. Here's laxsupermom's cork floors. Either color on it's own doesn't have much contrast.

For backsplash, go with something quiet and classic. A single field tile rather than a pattern or contrasting colors or sheens. Subways in a running bond or herringbone pattern. Or a larger sized tile in a solid color like this.

Sorry, should have clarified. It's very light natural maple. No stain I think.

I'm going to try to take a picture and have her post it (I don't think i can on the iPad).

    Thanks!

    Appreciate the pics especially

My friend quite likes the idea of doing chocolate colored squares on the backsplash and some type of wood floor.

Aother option that I personally think would work well is to do a brown/ gold small glass tile above the stove and around the hood/ stainless splash, with a neutral off white/ cream/ light beige subway tile for the rest of the splash to make the hood focal point pop.
I don't think that such a small amount will 'argue' with the counter top, but I would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

Link to chocolate tile she likes below.

and here's the link to the type of glass tiles I think could work as a bit of bling around the hood with a neutral tile for the rest of the splash.

Boxerpups - I was hoping you would chime in - thanks so much!

Pics are always so useful for getting ideas.

Not leaving our kitchen yet! : ) I absolutely love it - if we'd had room for an island it would have been perfect. I do love those floor to ceiling pull out pantries for a small space, so useful!

Cork is an interesting idea for flooring. Certainly comfortable to stand on too.

    Thanks again!
