Can't visualize this. Are these mortised locks with knobs on spindles? Or are these newer locks with a 2 1/8" hole for the knob set and a 1" hole for the spring latch? These locks have a 2 3/8" backset from the edge of the door. This backset needs to be maintained if the latch is to fit.

Aaaarrrrrrghhhhh! PO's took out all the beautiful glass doorknobs in my house and I have spent lots of time and $$$ filling the enlarged holes and refitting vintage fixtures. Think twice before pulling vintage hardware!

If you really want to replace the locks you can use a hole saw and a piece of 2x lumber to guide everything.

Use the hole saw to go through a piece of 2x6.
Clamp the pieces of 2x6 over the old hole centered up.
Drill through the door with the same hole saw.
Be very carefull as t=you break through.
Clamping some 1x on the off side can prevent chipping as the saw exits the door.

lee vallet tools (leevalley.com) sell a simple product called an "oops arbor" #30N03.90. It allows you to use a smaller 2" hole saw as the pilot inside a larger 2 1/8 hole saw. Works great for this task.

I do agree however about thinking twice before replacing some of that vintage hardware

I have quite a bit of vintage door hardware if anyone is interested. Purchased it in an inexplicable eBay binge a couple of years ago, then when it came time to put the doorknobs in our newly renovated house, had misplaced the box.

Now the house is done and the box has --of course-- resurfaced. What a bummer.

mY DAUGHTER WANTED TO KEEP THE OLD GLASS DOOR KNOBS ON THE NEW PINE DOOR I INSTALLED . sorry for the caps do i have to use the old big latch box or will the newer small set work with the old square threaded kob set ? THANKS Jim
