DIY Upholstery of Sofa & Love Seat

I have finally finished recovering my family room sofa & love seat. I had been researching and thinking about doing my own upholstery for a couple of years. After reading (books & online) and watching several videos, I decided to go for it.
My plan was to get started and see how it progressed. If it was too overwhelming, I was going to take it to a professional.

As it turned out, I was able to do it by myself. A professional upholsterer would have done a much better job, but it came out fine for me.
It took almost 4 months (working only 3 days a week) to complete both pieces. I kept a journal and it took about 120 hours total.

Thanks to information and inspiration from several GW members who do their own upholstery, I was able to get courageous and give this a try. I did an office chair first, before attempting these bigger pieces.
I hope this post will encourage others out there who have been thinking about trying their hand at upholstery.

My sofa & love seat are almost 19 years old. They are what might be described as high back pub style. I was very tired of looking at the bold plaid pattern. The kitchen and FR are open to each other.
After we had replaced the old counter top to granite, I felt the pattern in the granite was competing with the plaid.

The tools used were :

Singer Featherweight 221 (circa 1950's) with size 18 needle & upholstery thread
Maestri #7 Pro Electric stapler
Fine wire staples, 22 gauge, 3/8" #7
Staple remover (looks like a screw driver with a special pronged tip)
Needle nose pliers
Scissors
Camera for taking LOTS of pics during the removal of old fabric.

I had to purchase other things at a local Foam & Fabric Upholstery supply store like welting cord, metal tack strips, 1/2" cardboard strips, Dacron batting, nylon zipper & spray adhesive.
I only replaced 2 foam cushion inserts (on the love seat). I reused the original sofa cushion inserts and just replaced the Dacron around those.

After carefully removing the old fabric (while taking pictures & notes), I used those pieces as my pattern for cutting out the new fabric. The new fabric is a Herringbone pattern. I had to make sure the stripes were always running in the same direction. I chose the stripes to run vertically,

If I were to ever continue upholstery as a hobby, I would certainly buy a compressor and an air gun stapler. I think a smaller, lighter, air gun with a longer nose would have been helpful. I have been satisfied with the Maestri stapler and it has been able to do a decent job.

I'd like to give a special thank you to GW members who I have learned from. I have been reading your posts over the past 2 years and that has been informative as well as encouraging! There are many more of you, but these are some I had taken note of :
nicole_, circuspeanut, blubird, lindac, nanny2a, cliff_and_joann, mary_c, trancegemini, emagineer, my3dogs, mary_ruth, kaijutokusatsu, macybaby, ratherbesewing, CLBlakey.

Now that the plaid is gone, I feel a sense of calm. I'm looking forward to making the accent pillows and getting an area rug, too.

Wow!!! You did a fantastic job! I can't begin to tell you how impressed I am that you did that yourself. And to begin with such a big job is truly amazing to me. I love the new fabric too and how it completely changes the room to a calming space. You must have an incredible amount of patience as well as innate skill.

I can't believe it's your first attempt; you'd never know that by the results. And it's such an improvement in the pieces and in your space. You should be very proud!

Just amazing, and isn't it a wonderful feeling to have done it yourself? I'm very, very impressed!

I jokingly called upholstery 'the final frontier' for me, as I had wanted to try it for so long, and finally just dove in, and it's so fun to take a piece and completely transform it, as you have done. I don't know how many CL chairs I have in my cellar right now, but I have 'fun' for a few years down there. CONGRATS!

I am speechless. Seriously, I cannot believe you did that. It is fantastic!

You did an amazing job! I think they look professionally reupholstered.
I am impressed you did all of the sewing on a Featherweight! As a former quilter I have two of the little cuties.

Thank you everyone for your kind and generous comments!

I had completed an office chair prior to the love seat & sofa. I had used the same fabric for that, too. I'm glad I was able to get used to using the electric stapler and working with this fabric and the whole process on the chair before tackling the larger and more challenging pieces.

The "final frontier"....that's a great description of how I felt, too!

    cooperbailey - Thanks.
You are lucky to have two featherweights! My mom gave me mine when I was 20 years old. It's amazing how long it's lasted and how well it stitches : )

Unbelievably great change! Looks so much better and to know you did it yourself must be such a satisfying feeling. That was not a trivial job with all those cushions and corners.

oh wow! Great job and congrats! I have always been afraid of re-upholstery but dream of trying it sometime. Thanks for sharing!!

I have two chairs and a loveseat waiting for me to take the plunge into reupholstering. You are such an inspiration because mine are not nearly as complex as what you've accomplished as a novice. Great choice of fabric and a wonderful job! You should be so proud.

arapaho & noellabelle - I hope you will "take the plunge"! I, too, used to dream about trying this.
anele & andee - thanks for your comments, also. Yes, lots of corners on all those cushions. The cushions/pillows on the (upper & lower) back had challenging shapes, plus a zipper behind each.

This was one of the upper pillows "under construction"

Seriously wonderful!! You need to feel so proud of yourself for attempting this & so happy with how it turned out. My parents used to re-upholster furniture, but I have never attempted it.

If you can do cartwheels, you should celebrate by doing some in your new calm space!!

Wow, you did a fantastic job. I was proud of my self for managing to recover my dining chairs. I can't imagine tackling a couch and love seat and I had an air compressor and power stapler. I thought about making a slip cover for an upholstered chair and even that was too much of a challenge for me. Pat you self on the back!

That is amazing! I am just in awe that you did that yourself! It doesn't look one bit easy, but such an wonderful transformation and so inspiring! Thanks for sharing.

lizzy grow, amck, badgergal, valinsv - Thank you so much.
No cartwheels, but I did a big happy dance when this project was done : )
After seeing and reading others experiences, it really inspired me.
So, I hope this will spark someone else!

This is really really .. I mean really impressive. If I did this, I would become one of those grandmas and put plastic on it so that it does not get spoiled :)

I think I might be as proud for you as I would be if I did it myself. I could never do that, but if I could...I would be bustin' at the seams tellin' everybody. This is pretty amazing, and your job looks better than many professionals I have seen.

cat mom, GWlolo, patricia43, gsciencechick, joann - I appreciate your comments!

There are several errors in my work and places where I seamed pieces together to conserve on fabric, but I don't let those things worry me. The seaming of pieces occured on the lower front of the sofa (below the 3 seat cushions). Above the welt, I used 2 pieces. Below the welt there are 3 pieces.

    I'm gobsmacked.

Such complicated things for your first big job - I would never have made it. Terrific job. Your room looks so serene now. Good work, you!

And to both you and Laurie, I am green with envy - my Featherweight was stolen in a burglary many years ago while we were out of the house after a fire, and I have never had a machine as sturdy and reliable as that little gem.

I made both my prom dresses, numerous summer party dresses, and oodles of Villager skirt and McMullen shirtwaist knock-offs on that machine. Ah, youth ...

Wow! I am speechless also. I just took my first knitting lesson today and was patting myself on the back that I actually learned to "cast on" and start to actually knit.
Upholstery would be definately out of my realm of comfort.
The pieces look great in your space.
