Finally! It looks like a room, instead of a mess of toys! Pics

Since we moved into this fixer upper home, I have been at a loss as to what to do with this room. It was once the front porch, but a previous owner enclosed it and converted it to living space and it is completely open to my living room. Initially I made it a sitting area, and also a "play" area for the kids. But when guests come into the house, it is the first thing they see, and it usually was overtaken with toys, no matter how neatly they were arranged. Smack! Toys as soon as you walk in. Not exactly what I wanted.

Here is how it looked a few years ago:

As the kids got bigger, and we added another one, the toys were out of control. The space became just random chairs and overflowing toy bins.

I couldn't take it anymore. I asked about how you all felt about a daybed in the space. I got very mixed responses and held off. The toys continued to take over the space. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. I asked again. This time I was pointed in the direction of World Market and ordered a daybed from there. I made new drapes b/c I couldn't take the drab color of the ones I had. I am so happy how it turned out. Here it is:

This is now what you see when you enter from my foyer. Yes, there are still toys, but it now looks more cozy to me, and the toys all have a place.

Here is a close up of the daybed and drapes I made:

Thank you to all of you who made suggestions. I truly do appreciate all the feedback.

What a great place to snuggle up with a good book, you did a great job.

I saw the pic before I saw who posted it and thought it looked familiar! It looks awesome...I'll take a closer look on Friday when I pick Kelly up! Love the color of the panels...it's one of my favorite colors!

It looks really great! Very cozy and I really like the added warmth of the shades. I'd be very happy with the new look too! :)

It looks great. I like the new drapes and daybed. What are you doing to keep the toys under control?

    The room looks great!

Very nice! It looks light, airy, and cozy.

Nicely done, it looks very inviting.

Oh, it looks so much warmer and cozier, too!

We recently got a daybed (with pop-up trundle) for our guest bedroom. Seeing your pics, I'm thinking I might need to add a few more throw pillows to ours! Yours looks terrific.

I love it!!! I just want bigger pics. Is there some way to make them bigger from my end?

Anele, I can resize them in photobucket. I will take better pics with my real camera and repost. I will also add the pic of what it looked like in between pic #1 and pic #2. It was a mess. The first pic was actually very neat, and taken before my 2 year old son was born. Those chairs were relocated to the living room and they flank my fireplace. I will also take a close-up pic of all the toy storage. I just can't do it right now. I have 6 loads of laundry and a full dishwasher that needs to be emptied calling my name.

As for the pillows. It was surprisingly difficult to choose pillows in the store that would coordinate with my drapes. I filled a cart in Homegoods, then put them all back. Tried again with different ones, then put them back. Wasn't fully happy. Then I went to the TJ Maxx next door and was able to buy most of the pillows in 2 packs for less that $20 each. I crossed my finger, bought them and took them home, and they worked, and I love them!

In another stroke of luck, the mattress which is memory foam, came with it's own zip on cover in a neutral color. I was going to buy one from Pottery Barn for $120. This one came with the mattress! The mattress and the cover was just under $200. I sent DH out to a mattress store and this is what he came home with. I couldn't have been more happy about that!

Ok I have 10 more minutes to go on the wash.....

Here is the in between pic of the two pictures above. When I tell you the space evolved into a mess of overflowing toys in bins, I wasn't kidding.

Here are some more pics of after:

This is the view from my living room into the space:

And another one standing directly in front of my sectional:

A closer pic of the daybed:

Here you can see the divided toy bins to either side of the daybed. In the corners are two wicker hampers that also hold toys. There are also some larger toys just in front of each of the wicker hampers that don't fit in bins, but my son loves to play with them, so they stay out and semi-concealed when not being played with. You can also see the two cane chairs on either side facing the daybed.

Here is the sewing machine table with some framed photos. I need a new runner to coordinate with the rest of the room. You can also see the back of my sofa how it is open to the rest of the room.

A close up of the larger toys that can't be completely concealed and the wicker hamper:

    And here's the other side:

A close up of the bin with the toys thrown (courtesy of my 2 yr. old) inside:

I resized the photos. I hope they are bigger.

These are bigger, but the original one shrunk, and I can't get it back. Grrrr!

You did a great job combining the 2 spaces, but yet they are 2 separate spaces. Like a nice sitting room to read, play cards, etc. in rather than watching the tv and being in the actual living room.

What a wonderfully warm and relaxing space you've created! Well done!

I really love it. Thank you for posting the bigger pics. It seems like a serene place where you have combined form AND function. The daybed makes the space. The whole area is so cozy yet organized. Your family is lucky to have such a lovely space!

Thanks for posting bigger pics. I couldn't see the original and wanted to since everyone was ooohing and aaahing!

It looks great! So so much better! Enjoy!

Wow, love love LOVE the transformation! The daybed looks cozy and fit the space beautifully, with the comfy pillows, inviting you to sit down with a good book while the little ones play, still being able to keep and eye on them. Or escape from the crowded living room for some alone time.
I have a very similar setup, and came to the forum looking for a solution how to organize a very similar area.. Once you enter my house, you walk into a long living room that's divided into 2 spaces, and for now, toys of my 2-year old daughter rule the first space, but it's all you see once you come in (no hall, entry door opens into the living room just like yours). Moreover, I also have 2 huge windows on 2 walls, and another similarity - I put my couch the same way along the fireplace :) to make a cozy adult living space a bit separated. I think it calls for my own post though ;), just wanted to say I love your idea, and the toy storage cubbies (do you mind sharing where they are from?) - and the change is inspiring!

Thank you everyone! My DH had so many doubts. I have been wanting to put a daybed in the space for a few years, and I posted a survey on here and got very mixed feedback. I decided to hold off, because perhaps I could find a better solution. While putting it off the space evolved into toys r us on black Friday. I had to do something to get it under control.
I was set on the Cane Daybed from Ballard designs, it was on sale in early January, but still cost several hundred dollars more than the one I purchased from World Market.

A special Thank you to Bestyears for pointing me in that direction. She suggested the bench because it was smaller. Ultimately, I went with the daybed. I am so glad I did. My children love it. DS napped on it the other day, and DD1 lays on it to read. It really is a comfy spot to just relax.

Thank you for all of your feedback!

Vanillafields, I'm curious to see your pictures.

I missed your question about where they are from. Those cubbies are sold on the website Land of Nod. But I got them for significantly less on gilte group, a discount website. I've also seen them on Totsy, another discount website.

Lovely room, you did a wonderful job with it!

Looks fantastic! Love what you've done to make the room more grown up but still preserved the play space for your children. Great job!

Had to come back and have another peak at your space - great job, again! Soon the kiddos will prefer the space of their bedrooms, I guess, they grow so fast - and the room will make that transition smoothly, too :). Thanks for the inforation about the cubbies - also like the wicker hamper idea - better than open woven baskets where you still see the toys!

Great transformation!!! I noticed your fireplace.. and I'm working on idea's for the mantel, could you please post another picture or two (angled and front on) thanks!!!!

WOW!!! How did I miss this? What a cheerful and beautiful room. Great color choices, window treatments and I love the daybed.

Those floors and painted wood walls...When can I come visit?

It looks so nice...much better in person than in pics...LOL! And that daybed is one COMFY COZY spot!!!

    Thanks Five :)

AKtillery, like I said, they drop off the first page so quick!! Easily missed!

Five, I am envious that you know Polly in person!

I am back to ask where you got your pillows. I love them!

    LOL anele!

Five and I met on here and realized we live in the same neighborhood and our daughters are the same age. Small world right? Anyway, we clicked right away and so did our daughters. So much fun having a "decorating friend."

The pillows are from TJ Maxx. They were 2 packs and were around $20 for the 2 pack. The bird pillow was the one I found first, and I worked from there.

    Thank you!

Lovely and soothing. You did a terrific job of tying the two rooms together. My favorite things. The cream(?) painted board and batten walls, the big comfy daybed, your drapes and the addition of the wood blinds. However I must say the linens and pillows are fabulous!

I may have to copy your bird pillow because I somehow seem to have bird thing going on in my family room.

Homeagain, the walls were originally knotty pine. I had to seal each and every knot with kilz primer, then we painted them. I know many would consider it a mortal sin to paint wood, but I just wasn't feeling the orange, and it was so dark and dreary in the rooms. We get very little natural light b/c of all the tree cover outside, so I wanted to brighten it up.

I think I've posted photos of what it looked like before. The color of the paint is called Malted Milk by Valspar at lowes. I love it.

Thank you all for the compliments.

You got a great deal on those pillows. I need to be able to get out an look more. I can see why you use the bird pillow as inspiration!

What a nice, comfy little room! I like the daybed. The big problem with them is finding enough pillows to take up the depth so that people can use them for sitting. But with enough pillows, they are super comfy and versatile. Who can't use an extra bed in their house from time to time?

Great job on pulling the room together!
