Help me choose an area rug style!

Hello,

I live in small ranch with hardwood floors. I just can't find an area rug that looks good with our couch in our living room!

Our couch is a floral Ralph Lauren fabric (beige with pink and mauve flowers and sage leaves). I like florals on the rug but it competes with the couch too much. Right now I have a dark green rug with a lighter green leaf pattern but it is too dark (the room doesn't get much light). I'm thinking of an ivory colored shag but I'm wondering if that is more of a contemporary style? I need something to brighten up the room that looks good with the couch.

Thanks!

Any chance you could post a photo of the couch? That would really help.

I don't have a photo of the couch but here is the fabric:

    Great! That does help!

What lovely fabric. I can see how floral rugs might compete with it, though. I actually think that an ivory shag rug could be very pretty. Hmmmmm ... I'll search a few rug sites to see if I can find a recommendation. In the meantime, here's your fabric so that others can take a look and offer their input:

You've said that your current dark green rug is too dark in the room, but what about a rug with lighter sage-y tones? I'll throw these out there, just for fun:

    Or maybe a tan shag?

I'm thinking ivory might be a bit stark. Much depends on the overall style of the room, though.

The fabric looks to be what I would call cottage-y~is your decor cottage style? How about a braided rug? I personally love them, and feel they can be used with just about any decor except contemporary. JC Penney has a good variety of several colors and sizes~might be on sale too. ;o)

yes it is cottage style...well, at least that is what I'm striving for! :)

I like the braided rug idea...i've been looking on JCPenney
also, love the tan shag rug....
    where is that from?
    thanks for the help!

I agree - a braided rug would be very pretty! How about something like this, from www.plowandhearth.com?

The tan shag rug is from www.selectrugs.com. You can search their site for shag rugs and select the color(s) you'd like to see.

    Hi AuntJen,
I love the braided rug. Also, where did the 2nd one in the sage rugs come from? I like that one a lot too...
Thanks so much for your help!

It's interesting that you like the second one that Auntjen pictured, because that's the one I thought looked best with the colors of your fabric. It's perfect, and would be such a nice compliment to your furniture. Let us know what you decide.

I wanted to put the rug right next to your fabric to see how it looks! :-) I like it!

All of the rugs that I posted, except for the braided rug, came from www.selectrugs.com. You'll have to go in and use their search feature -- I was searching under floral rugs and traditional rugs in ivory/beige shades. (I have ordered from Select Rugs and have been very pleased with their service.)

I love a trellis rug with a floral pattern. You can go to a carpet store & have one made for you size room.
Seagrass would also look great with your pretty fabric & lend to a cottagey feel.

The one posted right above looks great - it is more geometric like the trellis/lattice that I think looks great with floral patterns.

    Smiles:)

Auntjen, I just wanted to thank you for doing so much work on this thread. You really went above and beyond, and it was fun looking at all the pics you took the time to post. I love your last choice, too! Anyway, five stars for you! It's folks like you who make it fun to read here.

A braided rug on wood floors in a ranch house = PERFECT! I'm a braided rug fanatic and in the process of buying several, including runners. They come in all different colors, from solid to multi-color.

I've bought from rugsusa.com and they have hundreds of braided rugs (and others) to choose from, and at good prices with high quality.
