Turning my daughter's nursery into her 'big girl' room

*sob* With #2 on the way, it's time to move my 2 year old from her crib to a "big girl" bed. We bought her this adorable white trundle bed from Costco yesterday for $299. (see link below) Her chest and dresser are black. My MIL made all the pillows in the window seat and curtains and I don't plan on replacing them. So I really need to figure out bedding. We live in a warm climate, so I'm thinking maybe just a pink quilt, coverlet type thing... maybe with some fun sheets? I'm not sure. Any thoughts? I'd like it to be something that can be easily washed if/when needed.

(these pics are her nursery when she was itty bitty... I haven't taken any recent ones but it hasn't changed. I don't have a good pic of the whole room... but can take one if needed) We'll be moving the glider into the new nursery.

Would like to put something on the wall above this dresser.. suggestions?

Thanks!!

I think your color scheme transitions quite well to a young girl's room. I love looking through the Pottery Barn kids and PB Teen sites because they have such cute bedding. I'm sure you can find a pattern there that will coordinate with your room. Since your MIL sews, she could make a quilt/coverlet from two top sheets if you find a pattern you like in sheets but not in a comforter.

Honestly, I don't think you need to do much to transition. Yay!

For an item above the dresser...because your kid is 2 (and how my 5 yr old has evolved in her room)...I would consider an appropriate-sized corkboard or french memo board to hang mementos, photos, and her art. It's cheap, lightweight (in the event she feels the need to climb at some point) neutral & would "go". You can do a frame that's good with the room if desired.

I did it for my daughter's room and she loves her board. It's her place to decorate her room on her terms and leave the rest on my terms. lol!

As for bedding...and the best I can see the room with the pics, I think I would go with something solid...like maybe the darker pink accent...I don't know...you have a lot of options.

After getting the solid selected, I would call your awesomely crafty MIL back in. Pick out a couple of those accent pillows...*gasp*...take them apart, and sew/incorporate some of the fabric into the coverlet in a subtle way to bring it all together. That's all assuming there is no fabric leftover in a bag at the back of her closet.

    Those are my thoughts.

Your color scheme is still fresh. I cannot imagine you will have trouble finding something that coordinates. Even if you went with a solid. Possibly MIL would sew a quilt, wide stripes of all the colors you have going? JCP has a bedspread solid, but a funky "fur"look that would go in several of your colors. We got the lime green. Maybe go contrast and look for large dots. I really think this will be an easy deal.

I'm thinking this quilt from PB Teen might be cute... (link below)

The room is already great for an older child - doesn't read as a nursery at all.

If you are using the crib for the new arrival, is there a reason you wouldn't also take the matching furniture?

Anyway, I think a solid green or pink coverlet could work, with some fun print sheets, but this one from PB Kids is cute, too, and picks up on the rectangle border in the room.

As for something above the dresser, I would consider framing pix of the important people in her life and putting names on the matting. She will be starting to recognize letters and things soon, and it is a great way to start the reading process without it being 'forced'. White frames, pink and green matting (or just mount the pix on fun pieces of scrapbook paper in the frames) and either hand letter or buy stencils or stick-on letters for the names - Grandpa, Grandma, etc. Be sure to have one left for the new baby, too. If you have pets, put them up there as well.

The bulletin board idea is also great, so perhaps you can find another spot for that.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy new member of the family.

Lauren, the Crinkle Puff quilt is cute, but it is made of voile which is a thin, somewhat delicate fabric. I think you might want to consider a sturdier fabric to stand up to the feet and knees of a young child and their friends.

The one Les posted is the one I was going to post. There's another post from maybe 2 months ago where they used the same colors; will have to see if I can find it because I posted a bunch of links

    Riley's roses $90

Look on the right of the link; there are more sets that look reasonably priced.

Didn't notice the gingham pillows- Pottery barn kids has sheets link

Do you have close up pics of the pillows?

Since your MIL made what you have; would she want to do the bedding? Looks like she has some wonderful fabrics on the pillows that she could use for the comforter.

Here's a pic from Calico Corners fabrics. The pillow fabric is really cute. I love pink & green btw. Getting motivated to start on my office

Thanks for all the suggestions :) I do not want to repaint the room at all, so I'm thinking my only option is a solid quilt/comforter. I'm leaning towards dark pink. My MIL would be happy to make something, I know, but I need something that will wash easily and I sometimes think machine made washes better. Soooo... any solid coverlet/quilt recs?

    JC Penney solid

I love the toile one I linked to above; it's washable; not sure if it's too heavy for you. Just found another that looks lighter- Vintage French Toile 4-piece Girl's Twin-size Bedding Set
JoJo Designs Pink/ Green 4-piece Twin-size Comforter Set

If you find sheets that you like; your MIL can make a nice ruffled comforter with matching pillow sham. I did that for my kids; they are still the best blankets in the house because I was able to make them the exact weight I wanted. With my son; I used flannel for the back; on another I used fleece. To give you an idea of how well they've held up; my son is 25 & my daughter 18. We still use them around the house; just not on their beds lol

You can also try Target & Walmart.

I have 3 kids - my 2 girls are ages 4 and 6, so we have washed lots of bedding in the last few years! I would suggest a quilt or coverlet instead of a comforter. The Company Store, JC Penney or Target quilts have all held up as well as I have needed them to. Keep in mind when your daughter is elementary age, she may wish to make some changes in her room, and the bedding is often the easiest to change, so whatever you pick does not have to last forever. Avoid white or light colors for staining reasons and if you can find a subtle pattern, it may camouflage even further. Your MIL can certainly make some accent pillows to go on the bed - my kids love their bolster style pillows. On other thing that you may consider is adding a row of heavy-duty hooks somewhere that your daughter can reach (or can reach in a couple of years). This would be handy for hanging the PJ's that she takes off in the am and puts back on in the pm or bags with her "activity" stuff like dance shoes and leotards, karate uniform, soccer shoes, etc. Depending on your closet and/or mudroom set up this may not need to be in her room, but regardless, little girls collect lots of bags and love a place to put them. Your room is adorable now. You made great choices with paint and fabric already! Have fun with the little one.

Here some unsolicited advice - take it or leave it: Also, don't fret over her moving to a big girl bed - lots of fun things are to come. It is much easier to potty train, get rid of pacis, etc, when they are in "big" beds. One other suggestion to lessen the trauma for her moving to a different bed is to set her bed up in her room and leave the crib in there. Talk up the big girl bed but keep putting her in the crib until she asks to sleep or nap in the big bed. After a few successful naps/nights, then move the crib out. With a new baby on the way, she needs to have some "Choices" and this will increase the likelihood of success. Best wishes!

Great room! I agree it will transition well. We moved our DD out of her room and into a small bed at the same age (DS was born when DD was 26 months.)

My DD is now 14 and her room is mostly pink and brown - pink walls, deep brown furniture, and mostly pink and brown bedding. It's a cute color combo. We found cute bedding at Target - polka dots in deep pink, pale pink, deep brown and sage. I haven't seen it there lately, but Target has cute bedding for a good price.

We got her a storage bed from PB Teen, with these storage bins in pink:

PB Teen also has these which might work in your DD's room if you need some storage:

I'm in the process of redoing my 7 yr old's bedroom from her "little girl" room to her "big girl" room so I feel your pain. I didn't make many changes from her nursery other than changing out the crib with an antique iron twin bed, but now we're going in a different direction and painting the walls similar to the color in your DD's nursery.

You have a great space already. The colors will definitely work for a big girl room. Have you thought about a daybed along the wall? It won't take up much more space than the crib and you could get one with the trundle underneath for those sleepovers that are sure to come!

For over the dresser, I was going to suggest a mirror but then I saw you already have one in the room. What about a shelf or stacking shelves with some knicks knacks, like framed photos, dolls, etc.? I just bought a few from Pottery Barn in the espresso stain and they're very nice looking.
