Well, that is an interesting thought, the funny thing is, I just picked up a new rod to put in our Master bedroom and had my heart set on ORB, as it turned out, the curtains are dark chocolate brown, so it coincidentally matches the drapes.

I would choose the rod either to match the drapery or some other element in the room like the light fixture.

Having the drapery rod be a near match to either the wall or the drapery does make sense. I believe Joni said something like "draperies are not about the hardware". Since I read that statement I've been looking more closely at pictures of draperies in magazines and such and, it is true, good draperies blend with the hardware. The striking exception seems to be a white room with black curtain rods...that is a great look.

Well I've certainly never hear this before. I have a variety of rods through out our home. Mine seem to match the metal in the chandelier/ceiling lighting or for the wood ones, our trim. None of them look "wrong" to me. But then I've always done things my way. Never have been a trend follower.
If you think what your doing fits your room and are comfortable with it, then don't let anyone change your mind unless, like you said, that you feel right about it.
