Pls suggest what to put in these lrg spaces. Art/tapestry, etc.

Hello,

We've finally gotten moved in, and have furniture in most of the rooms now.

What we are still working on is trying to find art of some kind for three large spaces which are bare. I have no idea what to choose, and y'all have been SO helpful so far with this whole build, I know you will have great ideas. :)

Below is a link to a few photos of our house. There are only pics of two of the three spaces that I need help with. (I will take and post a photo of the third space when I get a minute.)

http://www.loydbuilders.com/Images/Galleries/SilerCity/index.htm?detectflash=false&;

The spaces are:

A wall over a low sofa (pic #11)

A wall over an entertainment ctr (pics #6, #7 and #12)

I am not 100% sure I want to put something on the wall over the ent center, but it is such a big bare space. Ideas I had were: large tapestry, series or matched set of matted photos - 4 or six in two rows, large triptych.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm terrible at helping others pick art, but wanted to say what a lovely home you have.
And I have to ask about the Loyd Builders. My Daddy's name was Loyd with one L as in your builders name. I don't know how many times I had to tell people, no there's only one L after spelling it for them. Is this the builders first or last name?

Thank you both so very much for the kind words.

My husband and I lived in an 1850's farmhouse filled with flea market finds from 1988-2008. This new place is our dream home, and I picked everything from top to bottom - including the plans - so it makes me really happy when people like the things I chose. :D

And Loyd is the builder's last name - Tripp Loyd - in Apex, N.C. He is a young man in his 30's with a lot of drive and vision. He and his team were a delight to work with. I know most people say building a house is one of the most stressful things one can go through, but I had a blast!

Howdy neighbor (sort of). We just moved to NC last summer--renting in Cary until we learned the area. We're now building just north of Falls Lake.

You have a gorgeous home! About the area over the entertainment center--I wouldn't put anything. We had a two-story great room in our last house and a nice entertainment center like yours. I just placed a few tall pieces on top of it. Kept the eye from going too far up the wall. I never could figure out where you stopped once you started putting things up that high (what about the rest of the room, etc?). However, I have seen a few homes that had lovely pieces up high. It all comes down to what you want to do.

And, since we're building and I'm having to choose stuff (and I'm sure you know how that goes), I'd love to know the yellow/gold paint colors in your LR, foyer, and the tray ceiling of the foyer.

Also, are there any places in the Triangle where you found good bargains in appliances or materials, etc.? We're waiting on the weather to clear so the basement can be dug, so we're right at the beginning stages. Did you do central vac, etc? Would love know--if you have time to share.

    Thanks so much!

I love your home also. Over the low sofa#11 is that a loft area? well, maybe a collage of family vacation pics or of things you enjoy as a family, or do a collage of items from your collection. layout the stuff on the floor on top of a lrge roll of paper, arrange it until you think it looks good then mark the spots on the paper, lift paper to the wall tape it with blue tape and locate holes from the marks you made. take paper off and proceed to hang items. Regarding over entertainment ctr, you can put molding around the entire space that lines up with the bottom of the upper windows then paint an addl color from your other adjacent areas. then over the enter. ctr a large tapestry and side large sconces w/candles would be a nice touch, it will help with sound proofing & warm ambiance. i hope if you decide to do anything I suggested you could do after shots? happy decorating!

    Hi Tracey,

We are almost neighbors! The Falls Lake area is really lovely. You are so lucky to be in such a nice area. Best of luck with your build.

That is ONE vote for nothing over the ent ctr. It may be that is what I do. I am kind of a "clean lines" person, and I am having a hard time envisioning something there, so that could be because nothing should go there. :)

There are only one or two things I wish I had done and did not, and central vac is one of them. We have indoor pets, and not getting it was one big mistake. So I would say go for it. He suggested I wire for it and then make up my mind, and I didn't and really wish I had now.

I felt like we got good prices on all of our appliances at Garner Appliance. They carry almost all of the major and upper end brands and have a VERY nice showroom with the appliances in a kitchen setting.

On my colors, the formal dining room gold is Restrained Gold, the foyer/Great Room is Universal Khaki, the coffered ceiling is one I am going to have to look up. All are Porter Paints.

I added a link to some more photos on webshots in case anyone is interested. The color of the bedroom is my favorite in the entire house.

I'm sorry I can't help..I can't even pick a color let alone the accessories to go with..........But if you wouldn't mind what is the color of your parlor ??

Tracey- Definetely YES to the central vac. I'd never be without it again after we have had it in our present home.

Lovely home. Nothing needed over the entertainment center. Once you have everything else decorated you'll know that is the right decision.

Thanks for sharing more pics! Love your pets. That's another thing we're looking forward to in the new house--a pair of new kittens. We lost our 21-yr old just weeks before we sold our house to move here last spring. Very hard, but I don't think she'd have survived the long move anyway.

What is the lovely blue in your bedroom? Hubby is wanting a blue room.

I have Garner Appliance as one place to check--thanks to the CityData Triangle forum and now you. They'll be my first stop. Thanks.

Beautiful home! Sorry to step off topic, but is your kitchen floor slate? And if so, what type of slate?

Here's a tapestry that I believe would work well on the OPPOSITE wall to the EC -- on the large wall with the opening into the dining area. This artwork would work well with tones in both areas. THEN add a few larger pottery pieces to the top of the EC -- something like wine jars or olive jars. Maybe an old basket -- for the texture?

Gorgeous home! You have wonderful taste in decor!

I would LOVE to see a larger starburst mirror over the buffet in the dining room! Just a thought!

Hope you'll continue to show us your lovely home -- and its progress!

    OMG teacats!!!!
I have wanted that tapestry for one of my huge walls. My dh loved it too. We have just put off doing any designing until we get the real furniture we want. It's been 5 years!
Not sure if you read my post about my breast cancer but any decorating is on hold for a while for me- bummer. But your posting this picture is like another sign of good things to come for me. I am going to order it ASAP as a treat to me for my having to go through all this stuff. It will represent LIFE in general for me. Every time I look at it I will be reminded of life and how simply beautiful it is.
As for oakrunfarm I think it would be lovely in her home!

Shannon: Very glad to help! And you are right -- the Tree of Life brings to mind of kinds of wonderful thoughts about life -- and all of the other lives we touch too! :)

Thank you all so very much for the great suggestions and kind words! Let me get to work here:

plants... Yes, that is a loft. The sofa has an Asian look to it, as does the table beside it. Your ideas are very unique. Thank you!

Tracey, the coffered ceiling (actually is in the Great Room) paint color is 2-3 steps up from the wall color - same color family, just deeper. It is Porter Paints, and I can't find the name, but I think it is something with the word Bronze in it. If you go to a Porter Paints store, and get the card with Universal Khaki on it, it will be on that same card, only darker.

I'm so sorry about your kitty. That is always hard. The babies will sure be a lot of fun! The blue in the bedroom is my favorite. It is Hatter Gray (Porter).

At Garner Appliance, ask for Robert. Very helpful and personable, but you may need to stay on top with follow-up.

forboystoo, the Parlor color is Restrained Gold (Porter).

pricklypear, yes, the kitchen floor is slate, and that is one of the very BEST choices that I made. We both LOVE it. I do not seem to be able to put my hands on the particulars, but there are lots of different types to choose from in most tile stores.

teacats, I do like the idea of a tapestry somewhere. I actually have another very large wall in the hallway/gallery that I think would be perfect, and I like the one you suggested. I had found another 2-3 on art.com before that I liked.

I think your idea for a large sunburst mirror over that buffet is an excellent one. We had decided to put a mirror over it for sure anyway, but just had not yet seen the "right" one. I also like your idea of the pottery for the EC. I have several now that I could put up there to get an idea of what kind of size would work well. Thanks for the ideas and nice compliments. :)

Shannon, go for it with the tapestry! Thoughts and prayers for your complete recovery.

Thank you all very much for your help. This is the first house we've ever built (lived in our "starter home" for 20 years), and the whole thing has been a whirlwind dream for DH and me. Having somewhere to turn with questions throughout has been a Godsend.

Oakrunfarm...........Thank-You soooooooo much..I've seen and liked that color too many times to not at least go out and get a sample....My problem is that sometimes I feel as thought I'm living in a sunroom. All the colors I like never look as good in the full daylight (I have MANY windows).. Every color I've tried looks great at night but not during the day.................Thanks

You could always try an oriental rug hung on the walls. We did that with one of our high walls. I actually bought another to use on a different wall (which is the big blank horizontal space over the foyer, much like the space you have over the door leading from the LR into the breakfast room), itÂs still waiting for me to get it up there. I like leading the eye up, I think it takes advantage of the height. Ours are thinner ones, made with silk, so they are not as heavy as thick woolen ones. Depending on your décor, you could use the more tribal looking kilims too, which are flat woven and not heavy. I know an antique dealer couple who have beautiful old kilims hung in their house, they actually go well with their traditional American antiques.

Love your house! Can I ask, what are the names of your chandeliers in the dining room and breakfast room? Thanks!
