I will summarize how this all came about...I started to notice a pattern in the threads created by frenchdressing. Whenever she asked a question there was a link to her blog with the same topic. On the face of it it appeared no different than other spammers who have shown up here doing basically the same thing. They start a thread and then link to their website where you find related material. When I clicked on her link I was sent to the same place each time, created by her, with that topic as the lead story (so to speak). So naturally I wondered if it her posts were just ploys to get us to look at her website/blog. And that's when I started asking questions. How she came to know of this forum has nothing to do with it. If we never question these things we could be in for a daily dose of blog advertising, from who knows how many that might follow her lead.

for your answer. I personally love decorating blogs, not that everyone does of course. I know we each interpret things differently. To me, the link at the end of her post is more like an example or illustration of the subject of her post.

I've certainly worn out my welcome on this topic. I think I've made my views abundantly clear LOL.

I simply do not want to see this forum turn into a tradeshow for professional bloggers.

Can't say I feel I've been spammed or tricked. I just know I like looking at pretty pictures. If it were not for someone here referencing Cote de Texas Id not have found her blog, and I love it. From her I discovered The Inspired Room and her 'Drive Bys', and from them both Velvet and Linen, etc.etc.etc. I do not google for blogs, and appreciate coming upon a good one by serendipity ( blog there, too I think!:>) Are they (the bloggers) selling anything? Are they going to/have become commercial? I don't know and I don't care as long as they keep giving me the pretty pics! As for seeing a link to purchasing something, why, I like that, too....as long as it's not in-my-face. I like to shop, and how nice to find something via a site/blog where items offered are of the bloggers style that I'm enjoying viewing.

Magnaverde is also an excellent example. He has a website where you can call and pay for decorating advice, yet most here love him. He's been told numerous times he should write a book, his photos are so professional, etc yet he is not chastised. Willowdecor has a blog that has been featured in three major newspapers and she posts her link all the time. I do not get the double standards.

I'd like to publicly thank those of you who have emailed me on this subject (thread). I'm sure your kind words would touch Corey/Frenchdressing also.

flyingflower, I think that there's room on this board for many different likes and dislikes. I happen to like the blog recommendations and links, and the CL posts, too, but I noticed that another GW member shared her preference to not see CL posts on this forum the other day (in another thread).

I can respect that different people like/dislike various aspects of this board, but I don't think it's up to any of us to decide who posts or shares what. Perhaps it's best to just scroll-on-by the things that you personally don't care for?

Again, this is easily accomplished by skipping those threads. No one forces your fingers to click on those threads, nor are you being forced to read them.

This is a public forum and it still says Gardenweb at the top, not flyingflower, in case you'd forgotten. You don't get to be the arbiter or moderator of what is posted or linked on this forum. Gardenweb isn't asking you to do so and as has been clearly shown on this thread, neither are most of the posters who enjoy this forum.

Your insinuations and rude comments to frenchdressing are wholly unwarranted regardless of how many times you've felt annoyed by her links to her blog. The only thing you should be posting is an apology.

FF, I liked what you said to southernheart '...gave your opinion,sparked debate, etc'. Very true. That last line, however, was mean-spirited. I didn't like that. Let's all step back from this, and come back feeling lighter.

I think this whole debate is very appropriate, since blogs are becoming more and more commonplace, I found it very enlightening to read everyone's take on it and it does raise a few question of ethics or at least intent ( for which I have no answers or comments, I'm on the fence on this one ) I think blogs are becoming an extension of a business card and a cv, a way to reach out and show who you are. Do it well, make it attractive and people will want to read you; I know I personally am fascinated by a great blog.

I think it's still a grey zone for forum rules whether a blog can be considered a form of spam or not, depending on what links you provide. But I really don't think anyone was out of line for opening the debate on blog links in general, it had crossed my mind.

Well if there is a link on the blog that does feed FD's pocket book...that would be spam and would be wrong, per TOS. I have to say I didn't delve into the blog that deep because it's not my style (it's lovely work, but not my style). In that case I'd have to agree with FF entirely. Again, I'm not sure because I haven't seen it.

I'm a big nerd about following the rules. If she's not, than it would be lovely to see her go ahead and follow the in the future :o) If she is...well then that's ok as well, but there are rules and all of us should appreciate it if someone helps folks out by pointing them out on occasion.

I like her blog. If you don't want to click on the link. don't click. Even if you are on the blog, if you have no desire to click on the advertisement sidebar, don't click. Ladies -- Your right to click or not to click is not imfringed upon so I don't see what's the fuss? It doesn't matter even when people put a link to where they may stand to make some $$ -- just don't click on it. Don't blame other people for your clickomania. Just because there's a click button does not mean you have to click on it! :->

A stranger who posted a msg saying "here's some stinking good deal on fabric" is considered spam. Now somebody who's been here for a while posted the same msg w/ the same link is greeted with "wow--thanks for the headup". You do not know if the 2nd person is linked w/ that site or not. People here (who worked for bombay company) have posted sale for bombay company when it was going out of business and that was okay. People here have posted links to fabric guru, ebay store, etc.... There is no way you can tell if the poster is affiliated w/ that business or not.

In this case, it's impossible to enforce the rules when the rules themselves are not clear. While Frenchdressing has a linking bar on her blog, she does not stand to make any profit unless we click on it. So, if none of us ever click on it, then she's not making any money. So personally, I find it's a bit outrageous to accuse somebody on the POSSIBILITY that they may make $$ off us especially when we are the one in control of the clicking. :->

If you want to talk a/b being forced-feed, let's talk a/b POP-UP. Now that's something I truly hate!! You can't even click it away.

Back to the topic at hand, Junk style probably == the same as cottage style (apart from Shabby chic). I think Junk style is more rustic, country while shabby chic is more romantic & perhaps w/ more british & french influence.

A very popular & au courant style in LA is modern rustic, or modern country which has its roots in Junk style - I think.

For me, the most important dilemma is how to make Junk style, less junky. :-> How to elevate a "junky" piece to an art piece, that's the question. The solutions (so far, for me) have been

(1) use it sparringly
(2) gives it lots of room to breath
(3) mix it w/ newer, less crusty stuff

For example, mixing crusty old farmhouse dining table with modern metal Bertoia chairs, or having an old chippy china hutch in a modern kitchen. An old walnut rocking chair, in a contemporary family room. It lends an element of surprise to the space.

I admit I 'm not too crazy a/b a room where *everything* is old & crusty & junky. It reminds me of my FIL's old shed. :->

I agree with your idea of JUNK STYLE Bella Flora. It is a art form to be able to mix old with new, especially when someone can take a few old things, let's say an old paint bucket and a wobbly wooden ladder, and make it look more than just junk. If you have a good eye it can become country modern. I agree with you it needs to be used sparringly, not cluttered.

Jeeze, This is beyond ridiculuos. Is FD blog really bothering anybody, besides Flyingflower? Is it effecting this forum in a negative way? Are you loosing sleep over it? Is she raking in the big bucks as a result of her posts?

I've had a website for 11 years and it's in my profile. I guess I'll just have to line up along side of FD, and have Flyingflowers opinion spark some more mean spirited debates on what's acceptable and what's not!
Maybe Malverdene will stand along side of us as well...

It's too bad this thread got off topic of junk style, which many here are interested in, according to the CL posts we see when folks rescue a piece and primp it up and make it lovely- like the desk painted black with toile fabric and Renofans secretary that had seen better days, not to mention allisons glass balls. It is so much fun, especially when someone looks at you like you are totally nuts for dragging it home, and you work on it and it becomes a star.
A suggestion, next time something like this comes up, take it outside- over to the conversation side. That might work out and everyone can be happy. Or not. Just my 2 cents.

I think some of the contention is just an ill informed understanding of running a web site but you need to put this into perspective, no one gets rich off click through links and many people use them to cover some of the costs of their site. If you look deeper the blog site has a monthly fee structure and when frenchdressing said she doesnt make money off her site, it's easy to believe because the money made from the click throughs most likely may not even cover the monthly fee. It's not some magical goldmine of money that some people think and I doubt if frenchdressing gets much revenue from it at all so all this fuss about an amazon link is way over the top.

FYI... if you go to the conversation side, there is a thread posted by someone (looks like this person is a long time member) with a link to her her new book (if I'm not mistaken). I guess that is not considered SPAM since nobody mentioned anything about it. I am not picking on that person, BTW (none of my business, since I'm not going to buy that book anyways). I'm just trying to show how different people are treated on this forum. Shame on you FF and others!

I've posted a link to FabricGuru's sale here before, because it was an incredible deal that I wanted to share with my GW friends (as I recall, that post didn't have any responses or maybe one, and I've participated here for a long time). I love hearing about good deals, and appreciate when someone shares them. I have nothing to do with FabricGuru (I'm in TN, and I think they're in AL), and I don't assume that every goodhearted soul who posts about discounts at HomeGoods or Marshalls or on eBay has anything to do with those, either. I'm just glad that someone will enjoy benefitting from that shared news.

There seem to be some many unwritten (and self-imposed) "rules" here now that it's really hard to have a good time participating. I work hard and come here for fun, just as many people here do. I simply want to see pretty photos and hear about what people are working on and see their progress photos (or what is going on in their lives), and perhaps cheer someone on if they're a bit "stuck" or down about their decorating projects, or even their life issues. All of the nit-picking and negativity here lately is just a bit much. There is enough of that IRL to have it also bombarding legitimate participants on an internet board. jmo~

Wow, I just read through this thread and just feel sad about in what direction this forum seems to be heading. I'm a short term lurker here since about Sept. I've really enjoyed this forum and all of your creativity. I do not have the decorating "eye" and have learned so much in the very few months I've been lurking. Thank you all.

I signed in today because I am so turned off by all the "snarky" comments lately. Last week, I remember just looking at my computer and wondering if it was a full moon? There were many threads that had taken a confrontational turn. I'm sad. I can find many other places these days to experience confrontation if that's what I'm looking for. Here I just enjoyed the company of a great group who had shared passions and enjoyed exchanging their questions, successes and choices. It's a bright spot in my very routine day. I hope this trend is just a blip and this forum can return to being a supportive, caring place where everyone is welcome and encouraged to share their ideas and experiences.

I know I am chiming in a bit late, but it seems common sense could prevail here. Many people post links to businesses. Where would the line be drawn? It might be helpful if those who have blogs (it seems like everyone seems to!), would say in their post "Here's a link to my blog". Then others would know what it is and decide whether or not click on the link.

It is not a crime to promote oneself, but it is more polite to be upfront about it.

The worst offense of all are bloggers who post an answer to a question, and conclude their post with a link to their blog. I've clicked on such links, thinking that I will receive more info concerning my question, and it's just their blog! Tacky!

Message to FF and anyone else who wishes to make a point:

We ALL know the rule: "It's not what you say,but how you say it." Have you not ever stepped back from speaking with a co-worker, child, spouse,friend, and thought, "now take a deep breath and say it calmly and politely, in a non-confrontational, impersonal manner"? That, FF, is truly the "Groupthink" you find on this forum, and I, for one, like it very much. It's been said many times: words should be chosen with delicate care online....a place where tone of voice and facial expression are absent leaves a yawning great space for misunderstandings. We do have differing views on many things, and must take care in how we express them, here, and everywhere, if we wish to make our point...but here especially.

I love Junk Style although I prefer to call it vintage - junky, crusty, or not.
I remember taking my DH with me to a barn where I had to pick up a load of 'goodies' for my shop.
He was incredulous when he saw the pile - of what he called crap - and offered to drive me straight to dump.
Complained about it the whole drive home.
He had to eat crow the next day when I sold more than half of it in the shop and has never questioned my judgement again.

Fairytalebaby, I wasn't going to jump into this fray but after what you wrote, I just have to say I agree!!!

There is a clique here, and most of them are professionals or extremely talented w/lots of money to decorate, or both. Frankly, I'm more in awe of the smaller homes which are tastefully decorated.

One of the first topics I did was on decorating the toilet, and yes, I was serious. I wanted to know what people put on top of their toilets. Thankfully a few posters showed me some beautiful pictures, but the majority practically laughed me off the board and the replies were over 100 with NOTHING but making fun of my topic. How nice.

What makes it worse is I am in the middle of a MAJOR remodel and add-on. Something most people can only dream about. My life long dream to get what *I* want came true.

Granted, the toilet question wasn't part of the remodel, but when I do a topic I am very serious. But since I'm not a pro at decorating, I'm basically ignored. I still do topics though, and hope someone helps me, but usually they only get a handful of replies.

It seems if one doesn't post a picture then no one gets help. I can't post a picture now (well I can of the new room but don't know how to do it) but I still have to buy things to have them ready to be installed.

I just don't understand why people here go out of their way making others feel invalid. I'll still post though and hope the kind ones will help me out.

And I might as well throw this out also. Les, this is NOT a diss to you. lol. I don't know who Les is or what he/she does, but I swear everyone takes his/her opinions as GOSPEL. Les actually replied to me for the first time yesterday, and I was floored. WHY? Why should I feel that way? Anyway, they were faded red paint and the seats, at one time, were caned.
Someone attempted to recane them, I'm thinking it was a drunken spider because that's how good they looked - lol.
Anyway, they were the first things to sell that Saturday morning and my customer loved them just the way they were (like I did).

I'm a history buff and just enjoy old, mundane things for their eras. That something can be passed down for years through the hands of total strangers and be enjoyed or found useful along the way is intriguing. Uplifting too.

That is a perfect thought. I know I for one am the happiest when I find someone's treasures for a song! Your thought I will pass on, it is a good way of looking at things.

I did score a nice little piece at our Humane Society's thrift shop the other day.
It's a small, ivory pottery, bulb bowl/planter.
I've had and sold quite a few that were McCoy and the likes but this one was the first that I've ever seen stamped Japan.
Cost me a whole $3 - woo hoo!

When I opened my shop, Vintage had to be a big part of the mix.
To me, old things have soul and presence and add that bit of je ne sais quoi that's missing when everything is bright and shiny and new.

I love repurposing old things too.
My next project will be tealight/votive sconces made with old glass insulators that will be mounted on old wood plinth blocks.
I'll mount them with wire and unusual beads.

I have to stop...I'm supposed to be painting the kitchen right now :-O

I personally love DIY style, and stuff, although my own style and interest are trending far more modern than I used to. (It's partly my house, which is modern, and so I'm giving in rather than fighting it...) But I am regularly amazed and impressed by the "junque" styling I see here. I think I'm the offender re posting a link to my book. I can't find the thread now, but I was just celebrating the fact that I had an Amazon page (still totally blown away by that, actually) and sharing it with people here -- I didn't intend for anyone to buy it. In fact, if I remember correctly, I told someone not to. It has absolutely nothing at all to do with decorating, btw. It's a historical monograph, and I'm working through the page proofs right now and can't stand the damn thing anymore, so I'd repeat my earlier advice not to buy it in case anyone's been sniffing glue lately and finds themselves tempted.

Les is a helpful person who has a good eye and I so admire her talent for furniture placement advice. I think she'll be flattered to read your impression of her, although she might be surprised at the impact you think she has.

are there cliques here, I don't think so . I think large or small homes have to be comfortable in posting and not feel judged, either way. Show me grand and expensive, show me small and quaint, we need all types. I also think new posters have to jump in and participate, carve a spot for themselves, I find everyone pretty receptive if you're patient enough. I've been ignored many times, it happens.

I get really annoyed with the accusations of elitism and cliquishness. It's simply not true.

Yes, there are people who've been here a long time. We've seen photos of each others' homes. We've seen various projects in the works, etc.

Heck, I've never met AuntJen, but I "know" enough about her style from years spent on this board to see a Talavera Toilet and think immediately of her home. That's not cliquish, that's familiarity.

I've never met Zipdee, but I know that when I see Jadeite green antique kitchen accessories, I think of her super cool retro kitchen immediately. Because she's in the "inner sanctum"? No! Of course not. It's because she routinely shares her progress with us, lets us peek at her photos, contributes frequently, etc.

Lack of response on threads happens to everyone. It will happen more if the question is too vague. It will happen more if people can't see photos. It will happen more if we don't "know" your style.

Hang around. Join in other conversations. Let us "see" your style, so that when you post a link to a dresser you're thinking about buying, we'll know if it would work with your house. Again, this is NOT cliquishness, this is familiarity.

As far as the blogs, I don't see the big deal. People blog all the time about these things, and so what if FrenchDressing linked to hers? I honestly don't see what the uproar is all about.

Nothing is more rewarding than finding some cast off item and using it in a fantastic way. Maybe it needs a good cleaning, some new molding, paint, or just a new purpose. I love the search, the purchase, and the make-over! There is one thing to remember though - some junk just can't be made better...it is and will always be junk! So select your junk carefully.
