Have you seen frosted tile like this before?

I found a tile that may be closer to my backsplash solution than the cork I've been looking at. (I decided the cork wouldn't work after getting a larger countertop sample in the mail this week and have started looking for other ideas.)

I was looking for frosted glass or crackle subways in white and cream shades to mix.

When I found this, I thought I'd take it home just to see what the colors look like...

Shaw Glass Expressions Frosted Micro Blocks in Seaglass:

I was surprised to see that the colors are almost identical to some of the frosted glass looking veins in the stone. The SS also has some rust veins that blend with the brown color as well.

I like the idea and these colors are a combination I love, but I'm worried that the mini brick might look too busy or dark once installed.

I'm hoping someone here has seen something like this in a larger subway tile... Or maybe knows of a photo of this tile installed? Any ideas?

Have you seen Remodelfla's kitchen? She has a truly wild soapstone and large rectangular tile backsplash that is in the same seaglass color as what you are showing above, though they aren't varied at all.

FWIW, I think her soapstone/glass tile combo is spectacular and what you propose above would be too (though I don't recollect the rest your kitchen).

Tried to find link to her kitchen with it, but can't seem to locate one right now. Perhaps she'll weigh in.

    Thanks, melissastar.

I know I've seen it before, but I can't seem to locate pics at the moment. I remember her soapstone, but don't recall the backsplash.

The rest of the kitchen...cream shaker perimeters,(door is under the tile sample), natural cherry island and window seat. I'm still figuring out the floor. I'm thinking a cream tile - maybe travertine style. I also found a very light slate porcelain tile today that was interesting.

Ayerg, have you done a mood board? The cabs, backsplash, soapstone and cherry island sound fabulous to me. But when I close my eyes and picture a light tile floor with it, the overall impression goes quite cold.

What about a cork floor? I know you were looking at a cork backsplash and I hear great things about cork floors...soft, warm, wear well and they come in lots of tones. A nice soft warm brown like the colors of the cork backsplash would work well and warm the kitchen up.

I don't have a mood board, per se, just a pile of all my samples spread out on a counter that I pass constantly. Does that count?!

Here's an idea of floor color that I was thinking. (I wish I could give the proper GWer credit for the beautiful kitchen, but I saved this photo awhile ago and can't remember who it belongs to...)

I believe both the backsplash and floor are travertine here.

We are doing wood throughout the house and I don't think it would look right to have cork next to it. I've done a lot of research and, although I think the wood would be beautiful in the kitchen, I've heard too many horror stories of wood in the kitchen - specifically from 2 floor installers - and am too chicken to do it.

I am worried about the floors. They are coming to measure again Thursday, so hopefully the woman from the flooring store will bring some great samples and give me ideas.

The kitchen is very dark right now. We are opening up a wall and adding more lighting, so I hope that helps, but I am worried about doing anything too dark.

I am having decision fatigue and we haven't even started demo yet. Heaven help me when we get into the nuts and bolts of it!

My kitchen is different from your planned kitchen in a lot of ways (I have stained cabinets and light countertops), but I thought I'd post a pic of my backsplash. It's a frosted glass mini-brick tile (Sendai silk from Lunada Bay tile) and will give you an idea of what a mass of this type of tile will look like.

Mine has darker tones in it than your sample, and has more greens and some blue. Despite that, it doesn't come across to me as dark.

Thanks, jakabedy. That is beautiful tile!

remodelfla- There's that gorgeous SS! I do love that tile. What brand is it?

Thanks! It's frosted seafoam 4x12 glasstile from the glasstilestore.com. Free shipping and it was only ( I say only because in the land of glass mosaics it's not bad) $14.95 a sq.ft. It's lighter and softer IRL then on the website.

Here is a link that might be useful: glasstilestore

Ayerg...in the pic you posted, the floor is warmer than I imagined and the matching backsplash helps warm things up as well.

Hm...I am loving those tiles. And, they seem to relate to both the cabinets and the counters well. I actually think the floor color plays nicely with it, sort of plays up a beach look with the sand color? It would be great if someone talented could do a mock-up for you so you could envision it all together and the tile en masse.

I actually love those tiles with your SS, and with your cream cabs, I think they'd be spectacular. The odd part is I looked up those tiles to see if I could find a picture installed (couldn't), and the online sample looked much grayer and browner than your sample. What I love about your sample board is the clear green effect, which is pretty much missing here:

Can you wait until your cabs and SS are installed to make a choice? I really like what you have going, but you may be more comfortable waiting until the other elements are in place before deciding. There's nothing like setting that sample on the actual counter before deciding for sure. Most tile orders only take about 5 days to come in, and believe me, they'll still be doodling around doing this and that during those 5 days, so it's no big inconvenience to the work schedule.

Floors: we've had wood in our kitchen for at least 10 years and it has never a problem. We're not particularly careful either. On the other hand, I think a floor like the one in your photo would be better in the space you're planning.

They do very much look like my bathroom tile.

    Mine aren't frosted... more translucent.

suzannesl - I saw that picture on the website too and that was part of the reason I was worried about it being dark. I guess since I have them IRL, I should stop worrying about that. I have noticed that there are some little bubbles in the 'frosting' of the glass and that does cause me some concern.

My contractor did ask me to decide what I wanted to do, but I'm thinking that he just wanted to know that now to take into account how much labor to charge for the estimate. I was planning to tile behind the hood, so I am guessing that I'll need to know sooner rather than later so that they can get it put up back there.

As far as the floors go - I've already had two plumbing issues that didn't cause problems for my tile floors, but did cause the basement ceiling to be replaced. It was damaged several months later and will be replaced again with the reno when they run the gas lines anyway. Pricey problems and I worry about it. My contractor told me that he has constant insurance claims after power outages for people that don't think to empty the ice tray or silly things like that. Sounds like me... But they are so beautiful.

remodelfla - do you know if those tiles are from Shaw? Because they have a clear version of the tile and it looks completely identical to what you have! Funny!

Thanks for the tile source! I'm going to order several samples from there. Can't hurt! :)

    Hi Ayerg73,

I think those tiles look beautiful with your cabinet and coutertop choices - not too dark at all. I agree with previous poster that if you could pick up the warm tones in that backsplash tile with your floor, it would be great. It would warm up the space and also "ground it"; with a floor a little darker than the cabinets. Maybe a medium tone. If it were me, I would do a beautiful hardwood in a medium tone. I think there are also tiles available that mimic the look of wood. Not sure if that's the right choice, just a thought... Whatever you decide, I think you are on a good track.

Thanks abbeys. You guys may be selling me on a wood floor after all. I hate to go against the advice of my contractor, but I love the look.

The idea of sandstone or subtle travertine is my #2 I think. I took a look at limestone too and that's a possibility.

    UGH - the choices!

No way to do the wood tile - I've thought about it. But because we are doing wood for the rest of the house, it just wouldn't flow.

On the upside, I'd save some $$$ by not having to put heat under the tile floor...right? (Yes, I'm justifying...)

You don't need to go to a wood floor to get brown tones on the floor. If you are more comfortable with tile, there are plenty of wonderful porcelain and stone tiles available. I'm sure you can find one with the right warm brown tones. Here are just a few examples.

No, they are not Shaw but look just like the ones you have. I got them either from the same place as the other tile or glasstileoasis. I can't remember which. I could go find try and find the box if you want. Lunada Bay tiles are GORGEOUS! Check out Stone and Pewter Accents for them or Mosaictilesource. They have alot of beautiful glass tile too.

melissastar - thanks for the ideas. I will definitely keep my mind open to the darker tiles. I think it will help a lot once a get those samples in the house and compare them to the cream tile I have now to know how light it is IRL.

I am considering the wood a little more now. I gave it a lot of thought... My poor DH is looking at a knee replacement in the very near future and standing on tile isn't easy on him. Plus I'd save the $$$ that I'd be putting into the heated floor we were considering.

I hope this poor lady coming to the house tomorrow is patient with me!

remodelfla - Thanks for the tile sites. There are some beautiful tiles! I think I am drawn more to the larger tile and that is really the only thing that is holding me back on the one I found. I will keep searching through these sources.
