Oil or Latex?

I am going to be reglazing some window panes and repainting an exterior door and trim. I am planning on using an exterior latex paint for the finish.

There will probably be some bare wood spots after I finish scraping and sanding. Should I be using oil or latex primer? What are the advantages of one over the other?

If you are going to reglaze using a glazing putty, then prime the window sash with an alkyd primer prior to glazing and after glazing. The glazing needs to be sealed by alkyd primer because the glazing is usually an oil based product.

Use a quality acrylic latex primer elsewhere.

Top coat with a 100% acrylic latex paint on all primed surfaces.

Definitely some new technologies out there for latex primers. For exterior check out the video at peelbond.com. I haven't tried it yet but they talk about a product called trim magic that looks very interesting as a penetrating high build primer.

It's not the primer issue, it's the glazing compound issue. Most glazing compounds require alkyd primer base and topcoat to make it adhere and keep it from bleeding out through latex paint. Even most latex glazing compounds recommend alkyd primer over sashes prior to glazing.
