Desperately seeking feedback: Kraftmaid's Oatmeal w/Ebony glaze?

I have searched past threads in this forum, and found zilch on this so I'm starting one just in case someone, somewhere, has the Kraftmaid cabinets in the Oatmeal w/ Ebony glaze.

If you have them, or have seen them, love 'em, hate 'em, or just want to bellyache about glazes in general, please leave a comment or post pics. I am strongly leaning toward the Oatmeal but there is very little photographic evidence of how they look in a real kitchen, and not a Kraftmaid brochure.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have the oatmeal but I do have maple in hazelnut glaze and I have to say that Kraftmaid's painted/glazed finishes are very inconsistent and not at all professional looking. Some areas have way too much and other's very little. My biggest peeve is that the open shelf above my plate rack has no glaze whatsoever. When I complained I was told that it was because it was essentially a cabinet without a door and they do not glaze this area.

I have their stained finish with a glaze and it is beautiful, as a matter of fact I just ordered more for my wet bar area but I would not do a painted finish with them again. Sorry, I'm sure this is not what you want to hear.

You can see how light the shelf is in this photo and how dark the glaze is on the plate rack compared to the cabinets on either side.

I'm a KM dealer and I have a small island with the Oatmeal glaze (ebony)finish. Personally, it's my least favorite of KraftMaid's glazes.

But I have to disagree with the previous poster. Within KM's price point, I think their glazes are nice. I really like the following:

-Ant. chocolate w/ mocha (formerly chocolate glaze)
-Ginger w/ Sable (formerly Ginger Glaze)
-Canvas w/ Cocoa (formerly Vanilla Bean)

Some of the stock grade and semi-custom cabinet's glazes have a 'drawn line' look. This is reason I like KM's glazing...they don't look perfectly drawn.

Homeagain, For above your plate rack, you could purchase some of KM's beadboard paneling and install it on the back of that cabinet. I have seen beadboard over plate racks before and I thought it looked fine, but maybe it would be too much on a glazed finish? Might be worth a try.

FWIW, glazes don't adhere well to flat areas...so many cabinet manufacturers would have this issue, not just KM.

Do you know if your cabinet has a wood veneer matching interior or is it the matching vinyl interior? That could make a bit of a difference too.

But I have to say, your kitchen looks beautiful!

Boy, are we picky! I think your kitchen is perfect! I know what it's like to nit pick at the little things, and even if we see it as a "big" thing, it is so NOT! I have to keep telling myself that NOTHING is ever perfect, and when I stop obsessing, things will be so much nicer for myself. I remember when I first had granite installed in our kitchen in our last home. There was a "vein" that was right in the center of the counter that I didn't notice in the slab, and then there it was right in my face. ONE person asked me if it was crack, and that was it for me. I put a kitchen towel over that area for at least one month, thinking of nothing else...certainly not how beautiful the granite was (it was labrador antique, a higher end granite that was VERY pricey and I should have been HAPPY!) ANYWAY, after that first month, I completely forgot about it...never once...until reading this post. So enjoy your new kitchen. It is so, so pretty, and no-one will ever, ever notice the difference in your glazing, except you, and time will take care of that!

Here is our small island in the Oatmeal/Ebony. I really dislike this finish. It's very grey and the glazing on this one is nothing like the other KM glazes. This is the Lindsey door which has lots of grooves. The glaze is very black and messy looking.

You'll see there's one spot that really looks bad. We kept it there on purpose to dissuade people from picking out this finish.

That's really disappointing Kompy to see as I love our ginger glaze. Our glazing really makes the cabinets stand out with our door style. You would dissuade me very quickly.

I thought I wanted the truth, but...... I CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!

J/K, thanks Kompy. You are the cold shower to my cabinet lust.

Homeagain, not sure what you're complaining about... Your cabinets may have just sold me on the Hazlenut glaze, it looks so warm and rich. Lovesit! Are your walls mint green?

LOL tiny! You took that well!

The oatmeal stain just looks very muddy. I was disappointed in the look when we got the island. AND this finish, I believe, its the most expensive premium that KM has!!!

Let me try again. The area on the open shelf that I am referring to is the outside edge, not the interior. The outside facing of the cabinet has NO glaze whatsoever. This is very noticeable in person, especially because the glazing on the plate rack below being extremely heavy. If you'll notice, the glazing on the arch portion of the wall hood is also much heavier than the cabinets around it. We've been in three years and it still bugs me, so I guess I am a perfectionist.

I love the chocolate glaze on my stained island. I love the nutmeg glaze on my cherry bathroom vanity. I will stick with my original assessment and say that in my case the stained finishes are much more consistent than the painted.

    tiny,

the kitchen paint is Duron's Moselle, a sage green.

    Good Luck!

Homeagain, I LOVE YOUR KITCHEN!!! Would you mind sharing what countertop you used and, especially, would you tell me about your subway tile (I LOVE the mixed tone on tone) and your backsplash over the range????

I too would love to hear more about your kitchen Homeagain!

And keep the comments coming! Anyone else have something to say about Oatmeal with Ebony glaze????

    Thanks for the compliments~

The subway tiles are tumbled Jerusalem gold 3x6 purchased at Best Tile in Richmond Va. for $11 per sq ft. The molding around the mosaic is from the same line and is a cornice molding. It was $14.29 per piece.

The receipt for the rhomboids only states tumbled light ivory gold rhomboid 1 /14" x 2 1/2". It was $28 per sheet.

I'm sorry but I do not remember the brands for either and the receipts do not state the brand.

The granite is Venetian Gold, NOT New Venetian Gold.

Here's a photo showing the full mosaic before grouting....

    And after...

Thank you so much for posting the details! I live in MD, so Richmond is relatively local for me.

I had one more question for you - the tumbled subways look like there's color variation in them, which is what I want. Is there variation or is it just the way the light hits in the photo?

    Thanks again!

    marblelove,

There is variation in each tile, and from tile to tile with some veining. The colors range from cream to gold.

Here's a closeup without flash, it's rather blurry. And my camera just died. I'll try to take another later.

That is just beautiful and exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you SO much for your help. You have gorgeous taste!

I just installed KM antique oatmeal w/ ebony glaze. I LOVE them!! I was reluctant about my decision, but I am very happy with my choice. There are portions of the cabinets where the ebony glaze is more prevalent, but that is what I like about them. It gives them a more Old World feel. I will have to say that are more whitewashed looking than I expected. They look much darker in the KM idea book. You will have to be careful when picking paint colors and countertops. I went with Silestone-black canyon for the cabinets. Granite didn't work for me. The island will be antique onyx cabinets with a butcherblock counter. I really don't have much to show yet as just the cabinets are in, no counters, molding or appliances. I bought a majority of my cabinets at the KM outlet in Lordstown, OH for a steal. I'm not sure I would have paid the extra $$. Hope this helps.

I have the maple with oatmeal glaze. they are 12 years old. the glaze has not held up well at all and I'm now searching to find where I can buy the glaze to touch up the spots where the glaze is worn off.

  • last year

I googled how to glaze them and I have to say looking at them you can't tell which ones I did and the original. The top coat we used is a little bit different texture but you could use a different one. Here is what we did. (found this online)

Take cabinet doors to Sherwin Williams and have them scan for base paint color

Very lightly sand doors, Wipe and paint basecoat

    Spray Satin Clear

Pour glaze on paper dessert plate (we used Van Dyke Brown water based glaze effects from Amazon)

Moisten a big sponge (big special sponge)

Apply very small amount of glaze and spread.

Use rag to wipe off excess - - men’s t-shirt works very well.

Use a small spray bottle and spray as needed to spread evenly

Top coat with another coat of satin clear
