Finally got my dog & horse picture...need more help :)

15 years ago

The picture has been backordered forever, but I finally got it last week. I started to hang it the other day and then realized it's too small to be the only picture behind the sofa, so I'm trying to figure out the best arrangement. I taped up some newspaper the size of the picture.

{{!gwi}}

{{!gwi}}

My first thought was to find 4 smaller pictures to put on each side like this:

{{!gwi}}

Since my center picture isn't as big as this one, I think I would need to move it up higher in order to be centered between the 4 smaller pictures. Would it look funny if it was moved up above the sofa further than it is?

I also found this picture of NHB's house (hope you don't mind me posting it)

{{!gwi}}

This arrangement also may work, but I'd have to find even more pictures. I had a hard enough time finding one that I like :)

My other question is what type of pictures can I mix with this one. I've bought three things with a bronze frame so far and even though I like the bronze, it feels a little formarl so I'd rather not buy anything else with it. Should I use brown frames? As a reminder, this is what I'm trying to put together on the other side of the room.

I ordered a mirror and I'm still looking for some frames that I like. Since I'm using off white matting here, could I use it with the pictures I use around my sofa picture? I'm thinking that wouldn't look right, but I don't know. Remember I'm trying to add off white where I can to lighten things up. I finally put this picture up in my kitchen (bronze frame) and add the white plates.

I've also been looking for a white rooster since July and I finally found one that I absolutely love.

So, back to my sofa picture...what arrangement would you use and what style pictures would you mix with this one?

Laurie

    a decorative wall-hanging candle on each side? I've seen some pretty big ones!

  • 15 years ago

    I am cringing seeing my room below that gorgeous one you posted before it!! LOL
    I love your new painting & your rooster!

    Looking at PB, becuz it is easily found......what about?
    These lantern sconces
    {{!gwi}}

    And to add some more weight on the wall......something like this old mantle. I see things like this at antique/junk stores all the time & not this expensive!!
    {{!gwi}}

    For additional prints you could buy an old book of plates of birds or botanicals and frame them yourself.

    OR.....try the horse picture on the other wall and hang a grid of bird/botanical prints over the sofa.

    SMiles:)

    I wish it were bigger so I think you're on the right track about adding some pictures around it. You might have to add quite a lot of pics around it because there's a lot of wall space. It's really the size of one of the pictures that would be on the side. .
    Perhaps look into a different location so that it can really shine on it's own or consider a large mirror over the sofa and use this as one of the side pics.
    btw, your dog is soooo cute. Clearly he/she thinks it's ALL about them:)

  • 15 years ago

    I love the idea of a shelf and it doesn't have to be an old one. Lowes and Home Depot have lovely ones that would serve the purpose. It would make a beautiful impact. I would go with that idea and place any other pictures you have elsewhere in the room.

  • 15 years ago

    Msrose, are you replacing the couch, or has that plan changed? I wouldn't hang any art if you are getting a new major piece of furniture soon.

    I think grouping could be great. Asssuming this is the couch, I think there are some things you can do to 'close down' that feeling of endless wall, and create some visual stoppers.

    First, a taller, more substantial lamp on the end table. The lamp there now is a buffet lamp. The bigger lamp with a larger shade will fill the wall and help create a boundary on the left side of the couch. Then either add a floor lamp on the other end with a fuller shade, or consider a tree or tall, narrow cabinet on the right end instead. The additional larger lamps will also bring in the light you need in the space.

    Instead of making the horse pix the center, which will only accentuate the smaller size, have it off center one way or the other. It will be less formal, more comfortable, and will allow you to mix in things more casually. I certainly could see a wall-sconce candleholder like those posted. A small mirror or two mixed in. A large letter for your last or first inital, perhaps antiqued or gilded. A couple of small prints of horses or dogs.

  • 15 years ago

    Would it be out of the question to reframe your print? I think a larger frame would enhance the print add make it a more important focal point. It would also eliminate the need to add smaller prints on both sides.

    If you don't want to do that then I second Les's suggestion to move it off center and add a small grouping.

    Pretty picture! With the walls as tall as they are you would need to add some height along with the width to fill in some of that space. If left alone, I'm afraid the picture will look lost. Finding old books or even a calender where you could tear out some of the pages and frame them is a great idea for art. Also, look into some of the online free art you can print out on a good printer like someplace like Office Max, Kinko's or Staples. It isn't very expensive to do and you can even enlarge them if you need to. Here are a few places for you to look at. Best part is it is free! I would also add a platter or iron piece over the picture to bring height once you have added some pics on the sides.

    OMG your dog cracks me up! Lovely picture and lovely room but that dog and his expression is adorable! Best overall room accessory!

  • 15 years ago

    Oh I really like that picture!

  • 15 years ago

    Oh, I like the shelf with all the chipped paint! I also really like the lanterns. I wonder how they light up since it doesn't look like there's a place for the wiring to go into the wall.

    Scooby - You know I've always adored your house, so I think it's every bit as pretty as the first picture.

    les - I am still replacing the couch and I have decided to go with the dark brown. I also thought I should probably wait until I get the new couch to hang the pictures since I don't know exactly where it will come up to. I'd just like to go ahead and get a plan and start looking for some other things to go on that wall. The lamp is definitely temporary, so thanks for the suggestions. I've also been wondering what to do with the space to the right of the sofa. I have one of those big picture holders that looks like a room divider that may work. I'll have to take a picture and see what you think. The picture being off-center is a tough one for me since I'm such a symetrical person :) I'm really working on that though. I wish a had a picture of a similar set up, so I could see what I think. I like the idea of mixing other things in. I just need to get a visual in my head of how to do it.

    maire - I probably don't want to spend the money on reframing it right now since I just bought it brand new, but if it really bothers me, I may do that somewhere down the line.

    So, do y'all think I should stick with dark frames and dark pictures similar to this one or could I mix in white frames or white matting?

    At least my dog was kind of sitting like a lady in this picture. She usually sits in a very unlady like way with her bottom legs out to each side.

  • 15 years ago

    I have seen pictures like yours double framed...a framed picture put in another frame with matting between the frames. Not sure it would be big enough yet but is a suggestion. I love your picture and I think it will go well with your new beige/brown couches. Scounces or other pictures would look good around your picture as it is.

  • 15 years ago

    I have been looking for something to put on both sides of my framed picture above my couch, as well. These past couple months, I've been thinking a lot about the PB candle lantern/sconces that scoobyruby posted.

    There is another pair of sconces that I like, also. They're from Willowtreehome and are 23" in length.

    These wall sconces (& Pottery Barn's) have no electrical wiring. Just use real candles or else the candles that have little batteries and look real.

    Here's the sconces from Willowtreehome

    msrose, what colour is your paint in that room? It might work for me.

  • 15 years ago

    prairiedawnpam - It's BM Lenox Tan.

    My mirror came today and I need some honest opinions on what you think. I do like it, but once again I'm worried about the style being too fancy. I can't imagine having to pack it up and ship it back though. Will the simple frames and white mats help to tone it down?

    {{!gwi}}

  • 15 years ago

    I had another idea. I could send the mirror back, hang the horse/dog picture over the sewing machine and look for something bigger over the sofa. Do you like my original plan with the mirror and smaller pictures for over the sewing machine or the horse/dog picture?

    {{!gwi}}

  • 15 years ago

    I am not crazy about the mirror over the sewing machine- they don't really feel like they belong together - the mirror feels more formal, the sewing machine more casual, and the iron base fights the mirror style, I think.

    I was going to suggest that you use the horse and dog pix over the sewing machine - I think a much nicer fit, and also lets the picture be the star, rather than something in the midst of a whole bunch of things.

    I know you already have a mirror over the fireplace (or at least I think you do), so as much as I would love to tell you to try the mirror over the couch, I think two focal point mirrors within that space would be too much.

    Could the mirror find a home in the bedroom, or perhaps in the bathroom?

    I think it is great that you want to start thinking about things for above the new couch, but honestly, I would wait unless it is something you won't be able to find again once the couch is in place. The new couch style and color will perhaps influence the feel of the room, and what feels like fits.

  • 15 years ago

    Ditto Les!
    The new pic over the sewing machine and the gorgeous mirror over the couch~~~

  • 15 years ago

    I'm glad to hear y'all say that because I'm feeling like the sewing machine is the better place for the picture. As much as I like the mirror, I'm thinking it may be more formal than I want to go, so I'll probably send it back. I'm afraid to find out how much that's going to cost. I'll probably order my sofas this weekend and I think they said it takes 30 days, so by the time I decide on another picture I should have the sofas.

  • 15 years ago

    I too ws thinking that a shelf would be nice and would help fill in the large wall space. I think it would be really hard to find other prints/pictures that would coordinate with horse/dog one that you choose.
    There are alot of pictures of hunt scenes that may coordinate with it, then you could build some smaller pics around it.

    Lovely picture !

  • 15 years ago

    I love that print.

  • 15 years ago

    The new print over the sewing table is a much better fit. I do love that mirror though and would wait, if you can, until the new sofa is delivered and see how it would look above the sofa.

  • 15 years ago

    You can't see the curtains as well in this picture as you can in the catalog, but I love this look with the brown sofa and off white curtains/pillows from Ballards, so I think this is what I'm going to do.

    I kind of like this picture from Ballards and it's big (48"), but it's also $450. Can I mix this style with the dog/horse picture if it's across the room?

    This one is pretty if I want to accent with green. It's 41" and $299.

  • 15 years ago

    Here's some inspiration if you decide to keep the mirror.
    {{!gwi}}
    {{!gwi}}

  • 15 years ago

    Oh, I do like those. The only thing I'm not sure about, and Les mentioned this also, is I already have a mirror over my fireplace so I don't know if that would work to have one over my sofa. If I put a picture behind the sofa, I really like the idea of a monochromatic look like the sofa picture from Ballards above. If anyone knows of a large pictures with mostly off white and brown or a set of smaller pictures, let me know.

  • 15 years ago

    Do you have an overall shot of the room? It might help us see where everything is in relation to one another. If I remember, the sewing table is on a large wall? The mirror would work over a sideboard or console.

  • 15 years ago

    Here's a picture of the room before I painted:

    I don't know how I feel about butterflies, but I kind of the coloring of these pictures:

  • 15 years ago

    Glad you got the picture! I like the idea of it over the sewing table. Since you have the mirror over the fp, if you don't have a spot for the new mirror I'd consider sending it back if it's not too much.

    I like the picture of the trees you posted. I like the coloring of the butterflies but I think they look kind of cutesy.

    I'm excited to see your new couch!

    I also really like the rooster.

  • 15 years ago

    You can have 2 mirrors...IF you balance it out with other artwork. Your new plan (brown couch & off white curtains/pillows) sounds exciting!

    Great pix, KMCG!

  • 15 years ago

    The more I think about it, the more I think it is okay to have two mirrors. I decided this one is too formal though, so I boxed it back up last night. I'll let y'all know how much it cost to ship back.

    Shee - I don't know that I want cutesy :) I spent a couple hours looking for pictures online last night and that's the only ones I could find that were brown and white, besides the alphabet ones that Ballards shows and those are way too expensive. I'll probably do some more searching tonight.

  • 15 years ago

    Laurie:
    I feel bad, because I was going to tell you in your mirror thread that I thought that mirror was too formal for your sewing machine table, and I didn't because I didn't want to hurt your feelings. I wish I had. Maybe you would have thought more, and saved the return cost.:(

    Regarding your artwork, I wouldn't pay $500 for a piece of art which wasn't original. How about waiting for local art shows, and pick up something from a local artist that you love? For your smaller pictures, check out calendars for inexpensive artwork.

    I haven't read through all the posts in detail, but have you thought of getting a print in the correct size and getting it framed yourself? Maybe a larger size would work better? I've purchased several prints and had them mounted to board without framing and I like the look, plus it's much less expensive. But that may not work for you.

    There are so many poster/print sites - I just grabbed All Posters and added the link so you could take a look.

    Dee - Don't feel bad. I worried about it being to fancy myself, but I had to see it in person to know for sure.

    kristi - Wow, that's cheap and that's some place I haven't thought to look.

    kmcg85 - I had a hard time figuring that website out the last time I looked, but I'll look through it again tonight and see if I can figure it out.

    arapaho - That would have been a good idea except I was certain I was going to keep the picture so I threw the box away. Oops.

    Msrose, do you have a computer with a color printer? You could make your own brown and cream art. Simple pick out some pix you like, whether letter fonts, or perhaps free clip art that you can find on line. Get card stock or scrapbook papers in an antique white or cream. Change the ink color on your printer to a shade of brown, and simply print off your graphics or whatever. Frame them all in the same frames. If you print them on 8.5 x 11 paper, matte them with a richer brown and put them in the next size up frame for more impact.

    You could also look for other brown and white/cream items to mix in, like plates or platters. Here are some on e-bay for ideas:

    brown transferware

    Consider adding in some things with a bit of color, tho- hits of blue or orange would be wonderful.

    Copper items would be a rich and warm addition to the wall and the lamps or accessories, like an old copper planter filled with an arrangement of greenery, brown seed pods, curly willow, rich cream peonies or dahlias, and some pheasant feathers tucked in.

    I have posted (tried) the link to some artwork that might work for you. I have 4 (Garden Maze I, II, III, and V) pictures by Blondel that look nice on my Lenox Tan walls. Mine are framed in Blackish Brown frames. The design is light olive green and blackish brown.

    Les - The thought of putting something together myself overwhelms me for some reason. I guess I'm afraid I'm going to not like the final result. It would be so much easier if I could find something already framed. That way I could return it if I don't like the way it looks in my house. I haven't completely ruled out doing it myself though. I saw an interesting grouping of pictures on the decorator website teacats linked to. Look at the 2nd picture and there's 4 big pictures with 4 small butterfly ones inbetween them. I don't know what exactly the pictures are, but it looks like a symbol or something. I just like how much off white is in it. It almost looks like those pictures psychologists show you and ask you what you see :) I could print something like that, but I think I would need something bigger than 8x10 to look good.

    Nancyr - Those are really interesting and I mean that in a good way. Did you find them already framed or did you have them framed? Is there any way you can post a picture of them in your house?

    Well, I mailed my mirror back today and would you believe it cost $68. The thing is Lamps Plus didn't charge me for shipping when they sent it. I know they probably get a special deal on shipping, but I still don't see how they can not charge anything.

  • 15 years ago

    Check their return policy - I've noticed some websites offering Free Shipping actually charge you for those shipping cost when you return the item. Others have restocking fees.

  • 15 years ago

    I just checked their website and I don't see anything like that in their policy thank goodness, but I would certainly understand the need for a policy like that. I'll have to remember that in the future when I order things. I think I'll be afraid to order anything big again unless it can be returned locally like at Penneys.

    This picture shows the Garden Maze pictures I mentioned. I think they would look nice matted in white. As I mentioned above, the background is very close to lenox tan and the design is green and a black-brown color.

    The magnifier sconces and the garden maze pictures are from Leslie Elliott Interiors in Tulsa, OK. They are very similar to the Anthropology sconces but larger. The iron plate that attaches to the wall measures 30 inches by 2.5 inches. The diameter of the magnifier is almost 13 inches. There is a picture below. Hope this helps.

    The background of the garden maze pictures is a lighter color of Lenox Tan. I will post a picture of it next to Lenox Tan.
